Hives Treatments
1. Hives treatments

Hives may be caused not only by reactions to allergens, but
also by stress, over exposure to sunlight, (although it isn’t the
same thing as a sun burn), or as an adverse reaction to some
medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or opioid pain medications
like codeine.
What do Hives look like?
Urticaria, more commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by red
inflammation of the skin that may range from isolated little spots, to scattered
splotches, to large areas (like the entire chest area for instance), completely
covered that are referred to as plaques. Hives can affect any area of the body but
are typically harmless and of a short duration.
What causes Hives?
They are caused by the release of histamines. Histamines are a chemical produced
by specialized cells along the blood vessels of the skin, into the blood stream in
reaction to any of a number of allergens. The actual redness and swelling is caused
by the blood plasma leaking out of the vessels into the surrounding skin.
What is the most effective treatment for Hives?
The best treatment for hives is to identify the causing factor and remove it.
Unfortunately, identifying the cause of hives is often quite difficult. Typically the
doctor will prescribe either an over the counter antihistamine, or if a stronger
medication is needed, a prescription antihistamine will be prescribed.
If these do not provide relief, often oral corticosteroids will be prescribed. For
more severe hive outbreaks, an injection of epinephrine or a steroid medication
may be necessary to provide relief.
What precautions do I take for healing?
While waiting for the hives to clear up, it is advisable to avoid hot water as it may
agitate the condition. Use warm water instead, and use a gentle, mild soap.
Applying cool compresses or wet cloths to the affected areas may provide
temporary relief.
2. Try to prevent sweating by working and sleeping in a cool environment if at all
possible. Wearing loose-fitting lightweight clothes that will not rub against the
affected areas so as to not further irritate the skin is also a good
way to minimize discomfort.
Typically hives are a short duration affliction and will usually
disappear in a few hours to one day on their own without any
outside treatment. However for persistent cases, or frequently
recurring cases, it is advised to see a doctor.
