1. What is an automobile ?
The automobile is a self-propelled vehicle that travels on land. It
usually has four wheels. An engine provides the power to move the
vehicle. The automobile, or car, carries people primarily for their
personal trans-portation.

2. History of Automobile
The first automobile in the world was driven by a one-cylinder engine.
The inventor of this automobile Mr. Lenoir of France Used 'lighting gas"
to run the engine and recorded a driving distance of 6 miles.
In 1885 Mr. Daimler and Mr. Benz of Germany used liquid fuel in their
automobile.
In the year 1890, one French firm started experimental production of
automobiles on commercial basis.
They mounted the engine in the front part of the vehicle and with the
help of chain-and-sprocket drive, transmitted power to the rear wheels to
drive the vehicle.
In 1896 some American engineers jointly worked and could successfully
develop full-fledged motor vehicle, the automobiles.
In the year 1900, a good number of workshops was set up in several
cities of USA, including Detroit City and started commercial production of
automobiles.
Today millions of automobiles are being manufactured every year in
Japan, USA, and many other countries around the world.

5. Basic Components of an Automobile
About 15,000 separate parts are put together to make an automobile.
These parts are grouped into several systems. Each system is made up of
two or more parts that work together to perform a specific job. Examples are
such jobs as braking and steering.
The basic parts and systems in an automobile are the major components.
These include:
An engine, or power plant, that produces power to move the vehicle.
A power train, to carry the power from the engine to the drive wheels.
A suspension system, that absorbs the shock of the tires and wheels
meeting bumps and holes in the road.
A steering system, so the driver can control the direction of vehicle travel.
A braking system, so the driver can slow and stop the vehicle.
An electrical system, to provide electricity for cranking the engine,
charging the battery, and powering the lights and other electrical equipment.
A body, that provides enclosures or compartments for the engine,
passengers, and luggage or cargo.
Others Accessories:
Electronic Control Modules (ECM), Safety Features Includes seat belts, air
bags, ABS, TCS, Anti-theft or security alarm, speed/cruise control, radar
braking, air conditioning, heating etc.
