CASE STUDY:
THE CASE OF THE ERRANT MESSENGER
I. Statement of the Problem
The main topic of the study is about the miscommunication inside of the organization because of
Henry Reeves neglecting his duty as a messenger of the president. Like in most organization,
communication plays a vital role in the proper functioning of a group. Information dissemination is very
critical especially where time is off the essence and any error is unacceptable. The story of Henry
Reeves is a classic example of an employee not facing the problem causing the expulsion of another
employee. But in this case, not only Henry Reeves is to blame for what happened. The president and
James Dubler himself contributed to his demise. The president with his dominant personality made an
error in using the grapevine method of communication in disseminating information to his subordinates.
James Dubler on the other hand, was unprofessional in his work in lashing out his disappointment to the
messengers being sent by the president.
II. Analysis of the Problem
With the main problem identified, the cause can now be also identified. Any problem can be
resolved by breaking it into parts to establish a baseline to work on. In this case the following persons
are the ones responsible;

 Being at the top of the organization, he acts as a military general that only knows how to throw
instructions at will. In an organization, a leader is more appreciated instead of a boss. The president
creates a wall around him instead of extending his ideas to his subordinates. He should create some
activities that would help him reach out to his employees like sports events and things of such sort
that would make his subordinates feel more relax in approaching him.
 His grapevine method of communicating with subordinates is not applicable to his work behavior. In
a grapevine communication, people don’t recognize any position and power inside the loop because
such communication is informal therefore when orders are sent through such method it won’t be
effective. Using formal channels of communication like notes and telecommunication lines are more
efficient and effective in such types of organizations.
 James Dubler;
 The vice president on the other hand doesn’t know how to correspond to upward communication
meaning he thinks highly of himself to the point of challenging even the president in every decision
possible which led to his removal from the company. His unprofessional attitude towards the
messenger is extremely foolish given the standard procedure of the president in communicating
information in the company. He should learn how to respect people regardless of their ranks.
 Being the one with the second highest position in the company, he showed lack of communication
skills by verbally thrashing a subordinate which is essential in creating camaraderie between
employees. He should learn to keep his calm amid pressure and be more professional in dealing with
such pressure.

 Henry Reeves
 He is the main contributor to the problem. Due to his status as a neophyte, senior staff members
won’t recognize his role being important therefore his inferiority complex towards higher ups
created a barrier around him causing miscommunication between the president and Dubler. He
should learn how to assert himself in front of his employers. Earning respect is the key and to
acquire it, he should improve hi communication skills.
 Because of his lack of confidence, instead of facing the problem head on he took the easy way
out. Being new to the company, he is someone who lacks enthusiasm in his work which is bad
work ethics considering his boss to be of the military type that pushes people around with his
orders. As a neophyte, he should show enthusiasm in his work and learn how to create the right
decisions because in a company the newbies are the ones that are commonly being nitpicked.
III. Alternative Course of Action
The alternative course of action shall correspond to the analysis of the problem in the same way,
breaking it into parts for efficient solutions.
 The President
 The grapevine method of communication being implemented by the president can be effective
once camaraderie between employees has been reached and not through power gripping. It was
proven when the other employees started asking Reeves on whether they have a message from
the President but at the cost of the vice-president’s discharge. But still, such method can only be
effective once the one giving the orders/messages showed sympathy and level-headedness to his
subordinates. Also he should develop a philosophy of open communication that would provide
an open channel for his subordinates.

 James Dubler
 He could have prevented his resignation from the company if only he himself have a regular
communication link with the president and not through any messenger. In a company, the top
management should have regular meetings to discuss important matters which in the case of Dubler
are not happening. He should have created a communication link directly to the president.
 Now with him needing to find a new job, he should learn how to communicate properly with other
people and on how to keep his temper in check.
 Henry Reeves
 He should not dwell on the negative effects of his actions and learn to be more optimistic. Any
actions he should make in the future must be sound and with consideration to the conditions of other
employees because his job as a messenger for the company is crucial.
IV. Recommendation Solution and Rationale
There is no exact solution to any problem therefore implementing all means of possible solution
to any contingencies is the most efficient method for this case. Both the solutions from the analysis and
the alternative course of action are required to have the utmost result.
 The President
 He should implement both informal and formal channels of communication in his company. Any
information should be deliberately sent in an orderly and efficient fashion to prevent any
misinterpretation that may cause conflict inside the organization. The grapevine method should be
implemented but it must only be an alternative in case the formal channel fails.
 The president must be more lax in dealing with his employees but still have a sense of authority that
the employees may follow. Open communication with the subordinates should be made for feedback
and improvement in the organization.

 James Dubler
 He should undergo anger management for his tongue lashing whenever he is disappointed. This
could greatly help him realize his mistakes to provide him time to evaluate himself and how poor his
communication skills are. Also he might need to take leadership trainings and seminars to improve
his skills as a manager.
 Henry Reeves
 He must try to reach out to other employees and be more sociable because in his position as a
messenger creating a harmonious relationship between other employees is crucial. He must also
attend seminars on how to become a good speaker to boost his confidence when talking to other
people.
V. Implementation
Based on the recommended solution, all possible course of action should be taken into
consideration to provide solution to every possible problem therefore in implementing such solutions
every bit should be organized to have the necessary results.
First starting from the top management, the president must do some reassessment on his
company and his policies regarding human resource management. He must provide a clear plan on how
to prevent the situation of the vice-president from recurring in his organization. Then, he must also
attend some leadership trainings and seminars on how to be an efficient leader instead of an oppressive
boss. He must also provide seminars to his employees regarding the use of communication channels
properly. Furthermore, he must create a plan about using formal channels for communication like
telephones and other devices for fast and accurate dissemination of information.

Then, about James Dubler, he should be made an example to other employees. His actions
showed unprofessional ethics at work considering his position as the vice-president. Him as an example
would be much of help for employees to understand the importance of proper communication between
co-workers in an organization.
Finally, Henry Reeves should be more enthusiastic in his work for the other employees to
recognize him as a good employee and not the one that got the vice – president fired from office. His
professional growth must be tapped so that he could be an asset instead of a liability to the company. He
should really attend seminars on self-motivation and about being a good speaker to boost his morale for
the benefit of the company.

Statement of the Problem The main topic of the study is about the miscommunication inside of the organization because of Henry Reeves neglecting his duty as a messenger of the president. Like in most organization, communication plays a vital role in the proper functioning of a group. Information dissemination is very critical especially where time is off the essence and any error is unacceptable. The story of Henry Reeves is a classic example of an employee not facing the problem causing the expulsion of another employee. But in this case, not only Henry Reeves is to blame for what happened. The president and James Dubler himself contributed to his demise. The president with his dominant personality made an error in using the grapevine method of communication in disseminating information to his subordinates. James Dubler on the other hand, was unprofessional in his work in lashing out his disappointment to the messengers being sent by the president. II. Analysis of the Problem With the main problem identified, the cause can now be also identified. Any problem can be resolved by breaking it into parts to establish a baseline to work on. Escobar 2 6  Being at the top of the organization, he acts as a military general that only knows how to throw instructions at will. In an organization, a leader is more appreciated instead of a boss. The president creates a wall around him instead of extending his ideas to his subordinates. He should create some activities that would help him reach out to his employees like sports events and things of such sort that would make his subordinates feel more relax in approaching him.  His grapevine method of communicating with subordinates is not applicable to his work behavior. In a grapevine communication, people don’t recognize any position and power inside the loop because such communication is informal therefore when orders are sent through such method it won’t be effective. Using formal channels of communication like notes and telecommunication lines are more efficient and effective in such types of organizations.  James Dubler;  The vice president on the other hand doesn’t know how to correspond to upward communication meaning he thinks highly of himself to the point of challenging even the president in every decision possible which led to his removal from the company. His unprofessional attitude towards the messenger is extremely foolish given the standard procedure of the president in communicating information in the company. He should learn how to respect people regardless of their ranks.  Being the one with the second highest position in the company, he showed lack of communication skills by verbally thrashing a subordinate which is essential in creating camaraderie between employees. He should learn to keep his calm amid pressure and be more professional in dealing with such pressure.

Due to his status as a neophyte, senior staff members won’t recognize his role being important therefore his inferiority complex towards higher ups created a barrier around him causing miscommunication between the president and Dubler. He should learn how to assert himself in front of his employers. Earning respect is the key and to acquire it, he should improve hi communication skills.  Because of his lack of confidence, instead of facing the problem head on he took the easy way out. Being new to the company, he is someone who lacks enthusiasm in his work which is bad work ethics considering his boss to be of the military type that pushes people around with his orders. As a neophyte, he should show enthusiasm in his work and learn how to create the right decisions because in a company the newbies are the ones that are commonly being nitpicked. III. Alternative Course of Action The alternative course of action shall correspond to the analysis of the problem in the same way, breaking it into parts for efficient solutions.  The President  The grapevine method of communication being implemented by the president can be effective once camaraderie between employees has been reached and not through power gripping. It was proven when the other employees started asking Reeves on whether they have a message from the President but at the cost of the vice-president’s discharge. But still, such method can only be effective once the one giving the orders/messages showed sympathy and level-headedness to his subordinates. Also he should develop a philosophy of open communication that would provide an open channel for his subordinates.

Escobar 4 6  James Dubler  He could have prevented his resignation from the company if only he himself have a regular communication link with the president and not through any messenger. In a company, the top management should have regular meetings to discuss important matters which in the case of Dubler are not happening. He should have created a communication link directly to the president.  Now with him needing to find a new job, he should learn how to communicate properly with other people and on how to keep his temper in check.  Henry Reeves  He should not dwell on the negative effects of his actions and learn to be more optimistic. Any actions he should make in the future must be sound and with consideration to the conditions of other employees because his job as a messenger for the company is crucial. IV. Recommendation Solution and Rationale There is no exact solution to any problem therefore implementing all means of possible solution to any contingencies is the most efficient method for this case. Both the solutions from the analysis and the alternative course of action are required to have the utmost result.  The President  He should implement both informal and formal channels of communication in his company. Any information should be deliberately sent in an orderly and efficient fashion to prevent any misinterpretation that may cause conflict inside the organization. The grapevine method should be implemented but it must only be an alternative in case the formal channel fails.  The president must be more lax in dealing with his employees but still have a sense of authority that the employees may follow. Open communication with the subordinates should be made for feedback and improvement in the organization.

This could greatly help him realize his mistakes to provide him time to evaluate himself and how poor his communication skills are. Also he might need to take leadership trainings and seminars to improve his skills as a manager.  Henry Reeves  He must try to reach out to other employees and be more sociable because in his position as a messenger creating a harmonious relationship between other employees is crucial. He must also attend seminars on how to become a good speaker to boost his confidence when talking to other people. V. Implementation Based on the recommended solution, all possible course of action should be taken into consideration to provide solution to every possible problem therefore in implementing such solutions every bit should be organized to have the necessary results. First starting from the top management, the president must do some reassessment on his company and his policies regarding human resource management. He must provide a clear plan on how to prevent the situation of the vice-president from recurring in his organization. Then, he must also attend some leadership trainings and seminars on how to be an efficient leader instead of an oppressive boss. He must also provide seminars to his employees regarding the use of communication channels properly. Furthermore, he must create a plan about using formal channels for communication like telephones and other devices for fast and accurate dissemination of information.

Finally, Henry Reeves should be more enthusiastic in his work for the other employees to recognize him as a good employee and not the one that got the vice – president fired from office. His professional growth must be tapped so that he could be an asset instead of a liability to the company.
