1. How did you attract/addressHow did you attract/address
your target audience?your target audience?
2. MastheadMasthead
I wanted to have a
hint of humour to my
magazines masthead.
This is why I carefully
thought of the way it
should look.
The name “The Jam”
came from the young
and teen saying of
“listening to my jam”
as therefore teens
would understand the
pun of the relationship
between the
magazines name and
the pot of jam placed
behind it.
I chose the font for 2 reasons
1: It works alongside the name of
the magazine and the image of the
jam pot, because the font looks like
a dripping liquid, and because its
red it looks like jam.
2:Its very individual and
recognisable.
I wanted to choose a font that hasn't
been used for any other well known
media products.
For example Kerrang magazine has
a very individual font and therefore
the logo is even more recognisable
3. CompetitionsCompetitions
The competition that is shown on the
banner of the front cover is giving away
free festival tickets for a well known festival
that is very popular with teens, which is
why I chose this festival in particular is its
strongly linked to my target audience.
Having the logo of the festival placed
beneath it means that its eye catching to
the viewers, and any that have previously
attended the festival (most likely teens) will
recognise the logo and feel as though they
should enter the competition to win the
chance for free tickets.
Also because the majority of the audience
will be students, it means that they will
have the time to spare to enter this
competition, and they will probably find it
worthwhile as they wont have the money to
spare to buy a ticket.
6 out of 9 of the people who did
my questionnaire had attended
either Reading or Leeds
festival.
4. PhotographsPhotographsI wanted my photographs to convey the theme of not being edited and set up to look perfected
like most mainstream magazines.
Throughout my magazine I have tried to show that personality is more important than
appearance and following the crowd.
Therefore I decided to do my photographs in a studio with a white backdrop, therefore there
would be no distractions, only focus on the model and what they are doing. Rather than focusing
on where they are (such as the red carpet).
My images were composed to connect with the target audience as much as possible, the image
on the far right shows a teen girl with a wrist piercing, which relates to the indie readers of the
magazine.
The other images are all set up to look relaxed and fun, to show that not all girls have to be
perfect prim models.
Using photographs like this will attract the target audience who don't agree that girls have to
follow a feminine role.
5. Text:Images ratioText:Images ratio
Because my magazine is aimed at a younger/teen
audience, I decided to have the pages consisting
more of images than text.
When a page consists of mostly (or only) text, it can
look quite overwhelming and boring.
If the page has some interesting and relevant images
to the article then it can keep the readers attention for
longer, and make the article all round more
appealing.
6. LayoutLayout
I chose for my main article layout to be as simplistic as possible.
As a teen, reading a block paragraph can be boring and the information
doesn't always “go in”.
Therefore I chose to have my main article in a question and answer layout,
this way the interview is separated into different sections and the reader
can pick and choose which areas of the interview interests them enough to
want to read about it.
By writing exactly what the interviewee
responded it makes the interview a lot more
personal.
The reader knows their exact response to
the question they were asked, this means
they feel as though they are getting to know
the band member more because the article
hasn't been changed and manipulated by the
editor.
