2. SIGH (V.)
• Definition:
• to let out one's breath

weariness, or relief
• Example:

3. PROVOKE (V.)
• Definition:
• to anger, enrage,
exasperate, or vex
• Example:
• He started beating me
when I was about fifteen
but I didn’t do anything to
provoke him
4. Page 105: Lincoln gazed at the witness, poker-faced, for several
seconds. Poker-faced means without expression so people
don’t know what you’re thinking.

• Definition: Comfort received by a person after
a loss or disappointment.
• Example: Although I miss my cat very much, it
is a consolation to know that he died quickly
without suffering.

• Definition : Crying
• Example : "I can't help it," she said, still
sobbing, "I don't do rejection well.“
9. Outbursts of rage
• Definition : A sudden expression of strong
feeling.
• Example : He recalled her outburst at him the
previous day.
10. Deny (verb):
1. To state that (something declared or believed to be
true) is not true. (To deny an accusation).
2. To refuse to agree or accede to ( to deny a petition)
Synonyms:
Disagree, decline.
Antonyms:
Admit, acknowledge, confess.
Example:
- (Abraham Lincoln book): In courts of law during this time,
black people were often denied their rights because
judges felt they were inferior human beings.
11. Fear tactics (noun):
• a strategy using fear to influence the public's reaction
• Example:
1) (Abraham Lincoln book): He was cheered loudly from town
to town, but in the end, Douglas's fear tactics worked:
Lincoln lost his race for the Senate.
2) Moms usually use fear tactics to have her children do their
homework.
12. GLARE (verb)
definition: to look in an angry way.
Example: Mary sighed and folded her arms,
Glaring out the window to the dirty street.

Ex: The attic is full of clutter
• (V): Crowd (something) untidily; fill with clutter.

• Def: (of a person, animal, or their behavior) causing or
showing a fondness for causing trouble in a playful way.
• Ex: Two mischievous kittens had decorated the bed with
shredded newspaper
• Synonym: badly behaved, misbehaving
