PepsiCo is a global leader in complementary food and beverage sources that enable them to provide many choices to their customers at lower costs. Their portfolio allows them to produce food and beverage enhancements and new capabilities never imagined. They have 22 brands and generate more than $1 billion in retail sales (Global Brands, 2014).
The mission statement is general in nature and shows how a company will achieve their vision thereby making the two having a close relationship. The mission is the action while the vision is the mental picture. Core values are the principles that the leaders value, follow and provide the activities that carry out the mission and vision statements (Creating a mission statement, developing strategies and setting goals, 2009). PepsiCo’s vision statement – “Our vision is put into action through programs and a focus on environmental stewardship, activities to benefit society, and a commitment to build shareholder value by making PepsiCo a truly sustainable company” (Our mission and values, 2014). PepsiCo’s vision and mission statement are directly related to their core values of providing superb food and beverages to the world while being responsible in overseeing the protection and preservation of many of today’s global concerns. They also promote maintaining viability by using techniques that are reusable which are geared to the company’s entire strategy in meeting all of their customer’s needs.
PepsiCo customers are globally located and have no boundaries on age, race, gender, or other demographics. They strive to serve the world. The mission statement needs to state whom a company wishes to serve, their approach is relevant and they are aware of the types of buyers they seek. They should be focused on what the customer needs and not strictly on the product. A company must now how they will reach their customers by using a who, what, and how perception to incorporate a market-oriented segment (Mission Statements, 2010). PepsiCo focuses on human sustainability which is reflected in the diverse portfolio of food and beverages for all customers from treats to healthy snacks and beverages as well. They research and ask what the customers want. They do not try and guess. They have been able to develop new and unique products by holding contests and including their customers in all aspects of their company (Liu, 2014).
A successful company will incorporate the mission statement based on the big picture for their customers and other shareholders. They should use their vision and mission statement along with strategies, goals, objectives, and action plans to achieve success. Strategies are used to show ways the company will achieve their mission and vision which allows them to create goals. Objectives should be established to mark milestones for when goals are met and the action plan are the specific actions the company will take to achieve the big picture (Creating a mission statement, developing strategies and setting goals, 2009). PepsiCo has been able to meet this criteria by integrating the customers needs for foods and beverages as they change over time. They also have a global brand, a global code of conduct and citizenship that ignites their mission and vision statements.
Companies need distinctive core competencies which are ways they outperform their competitors and should stay focused on traits and niche markets (Mission Statements, 2010). PepsiCo’s commitment is to deliver food and beverages while keeping in mind that they must deliver sustained growth by acting responsibly. They empower people in order to get the job done and to act in ways that are congruent with the company’s overall governance. They hold themselves responsible for every decision they make and act as good stewards of the resources they use (Our mission and values, 2014).
Competitive advantage is important to incorporate into the mission statement as it demonstrates the companies unique skills and resources to create value and strength that the competition will not be able to compare with (Mission Statements, 2010). PepsiCo creates a competitive advantage by using the Performance with a Purpose philosophy. They wanted a unique and productive way to guide the company’s strategy and operation while focusing on their many promises. They strive to deliver long term financial performance and sustained shareholder value. They are always changing to meet customer’s needs by reducing sodium, sugars, and fat in their consumables. In addition, they strive to provide nutrition information on their products and market them appropriately. They have programs to protect and conserve global water supplies, and work to eliminate waste from our environment. They strive to create safe, healthy and talented employees that will reflect their overall company beliefs and core values (Our performance with purpose goals, 2014).
PepsiCo has a mission statement that motivates and inspires employees. They hold steadfast to the core beliefs that the company not only provide food and beverages to consumers but participate in global issues that affect us all. They have been so successful at this and have won many awards for their efforts. These are prestigious awards that the employees can get excited about and feel that their job does make a difference not only in the food and beverages PepsiCo provides but the long term effects of environmental and human rights initiatives that all consumers are concerned with as well. They have received awards as one of the most respected companies, most admired companies, most ethical companies, and most reputable companies (Awards & Recognition, 2014).
Besides PepsiCo’s Performance with a Purpose they also want to be remembered for the global citizenship which include the strategic grants to nonprofit agencies working in the environmental, educational, civic, arts, and health and human service fields (Strategic Grants, 2014). PepsiCo also strives to have employees volunteer their time and talent in such programs as PepsiCorps, Mother Water Cellar Project in Greater China Region and Food for Good Possibilities (Community Service & Volunteering, 2014). Finally, they want to be remembered for the disaster relief and humanitarian support during such times as the April 2013 earthquake in China, Hurricane Sandy and the 2010 Floods in Pakistan (Disaster Relief & Humanitarian Support, 2014).
