19. Peru is U18 Pan American Champion and Janelly Ceopa MVP
DURANGO, Mexico, May 26, 2019.- Peru is the Girls’ U18 Pan American Champion
defeating Puerto Rico 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-22) in the title match and Peruvian Janelly
Ceopa was elected the Most Valuable Player of the fifth edition of the event that
concluded on Sunday at Auditorio del Pueblo of Durango, Mexico.
Peru entered the event already qualified to the FIVB World Championship, won their first
ever U18 Pan American Cup and first ever medal in the history of the event. For Puerto
Rico, this is their second silver medal; they lost to Brazil in 2013.
Mexico qualified to FIVB age-group World Championship winning the Girls’ U18 Pan
American Bronze medal match to Chile 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15).

Guatemala 3, Honduras 0
Guatemala beat Honduras 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) to finish seventh place. Guatemala
reached both technical time-outs with a comfortable lead (8-4, 16-9) working hard over
the net winning the first set by a sizeable 25-17. Honduras recovered from a five-point
deficit (6-11) to even the score to 11 in set two, on Guatemalan attack and defense errors;
but outside hitter Laura Cortéz along with opposite Jimena Castellanos carried Guatemala
to lead 2-0. In set three, Honduras’ attackers struggled to hold off Guatemala’s organized
performance that kept on moving forward remaining on top the entire set. Guatemala
carried out a well-organized performance leading with huge 40-23 margin in spikes, 5-3
advantage in blocks and committed fewer errors (25-28). Honduras led 4-2 in blocks.
Outside hitter Laura Cortéz was key in Guatemala’s victory scoring 20 points, joined by
20. opposite player Jimena Castellanos with 11 points. Opposite Rocio Duron led Honduras
with 10 points and outside hitter Dazly Duran chipped in with 8 points.
Cuba 3, Dominican Republic 2
Cuba won fifth place in five sets 3-2 (25-14, 25-22, 14-25, 21-25, 17-15). Cuba had no
resistance from Dominican Republic easily jumping to a 14-6 lead during the first set as
the Dominicans lacked energy, allowing Cuba to have a party of points in set one. Set two
was different as Dominican Republic improved in spikes and blocks; still Cuba led with a
balanced attack between five players to keep their winning campaign 2-0. Dominicans
bounced back to win sets three and four relying on Sthefany Gonzalez, Romina Cornelio
and Flormarie Heredia forcing a tie-break. Cuban Dayana Martinez was powerful over the
net, scoring on solid spikes and monster blocks, key in Cuba’s comeback from a two point
deficit (9-11) for a thriller win. Cuba’s unstoppable serves were crucial with impressive 13-
5 margin over Dominican Republic, they also led in kills 51-43 and scored on 40 opponent
errors and limiting their own to 27. Dominican prevailed con blocks 13-11. Cuba used a
balanced scoring attack with setter Yaimaris Garcia on 16 points including 5 tough aces,
outside hitter Thainalien Castillo (16pts), middle blocker Dayana Martinez (14), outside
hitter Claudia Tarin (13pts) and setter Thalia Moreno (11pts). Dominicans also distributed
their scoring sheet with Flormarie Heredia scoring a match-high of 18 points, alongside
Romina Cornelio and Sthefany Gonzalez with 14 points apiece.
Bronze medal: Mexico 3, Chile 1
Mexico qualified to FIVB age-group World Championship winning the Girls’ U18 Pan
American Bronze medal match to Chile 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15). Mexico qualifies
to its third consecutive FIVB World Championship, winning their second Pan Am medal,
they won silver in 2011. Mexico won the first set with calculated moves, remaining
focused and keeping Chile under control with Marian Ovalle and Melanie Parra leading the
pack. Chile evened the score trailing on a four-point deficit (16-20) to win the set not
before losing two set points to Melanie Parra. Chile’s scorers were patient coming from
behind (11-16) thru middle blockers Elisa Sandrock and Constanza Silva along with Maria
Jesus on the side; but Mexico bounced back 2-1 moving into set four with spectacular 13-5
lead on a combination of attacks and Chilean errors. The home girls held advantage 65-45
in spikes, 9-6 in blocks, a slim 5-4 in aces and scored on 22 opponent errors and
committing 29 of their own. Melanie Parra once again led Mexico on a match-high of 26
points on 23 kills and 3 blocks, opposite player Marian Ovalle joined in with 20 points
including 18 kills and middle blocker Sofia Maldonado alongside Grecia Ung contributed
with 10 points each. Maria Jesus Muñoz topped Chile with 14 points on 13 kills and one
21. ace, followed by middle blocker Elisa Sandrock also with 14 points, outside hitter Ignacia
Badilla added 12 points and middle blocker Constanza Silva tallied 10 points.
Gold Medal: Peru 3, Puerto Rico 0
Peru is the Girls’ U18 Pan American Champion defeating Puerto Rico 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-
22) in the title match. Peru entered the event already qualified to the FIVB World
Championship, won their first ever U18 Pan American Cup and first ever medal in the
history of the event. For Puerto Rico, this is their second silver medal; they lost to Brazil in
2013. Set one has long rallies, fast moves and was tied on numerous occasions with points
going to each side; Puerto Rico lost two set-points (24-22) to Peru’s effective blockers to
move on top 26-24. In set two, Peru did not give up and kept on pushing hard, finding a
way to move on top on Puerto Rico’s errors to a sizeable 18-10 advantage commanded by
Alondra Alarcon and Janelly Ceopa; Puerto Rico with little opportunities to respond. In set
three Puerto Rico started strong to be on top 10-7 but Peru remained calm and struck
back harder to finish with the straight set win. Peru won the title match to Puerto Rico
leading 42-34 in spikes and committing fewer errors (18-29). Puerto Rico was superior in
blocks 7-4 and in aces by 3-1. Outside hitter Janelly Ceopa topped Peru’s scorers with a
match-high of 15 points all in kills, outside hitter Alondra Alarcon scored 10 points on kills
and opposite Camila Perez finished with 9 points. Sofia Victoriá led Puerto Rico with 13
points on kills and Valeria Otero along with Alondra Maldonado joined in with 9 and 8
points respectively.

DURANGO, México, 26 de mayor Perú es el campeón de la Copa Panamericana de Voleibol
Femenino U18 derrotando a Puerto Rico 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-22) en el juego por el título
de la quinta edición y la peruana Janelly Ceopa fue electa Jugadora Más Valiosa del evento
que culminó el domingo en el Auditorio del Pueblo de Durango, México.
Perú, que entró al evento ya clasificado al Campeonato Mundial de la FIVB, ganó su
primera Copa Panamericana U18 y su primera medalla en la historia del evento.
México clasifico al Campeonato Mundial FIVB de la categoría tras ganar el juego por la
medalla de bronce de la Copa Panamericana de Voleibol Femenino U18 a Chile 3-1 (25-21,
25-27, 25-21, 25-15).

Guatemala venció a Honduras 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) para finalizar en el séptimo lugar.
Guatemala llegó cómodamente a los dos tiempos técnicos del primer set (8-4, 16-9)
trabajando fuerte sobre la net y cerrando por amplia ventaja de 25-17. Honduras se
recuperó de un déficit de cinco puntos (6-11) y empatar a 11 en el segundo set por
algunos errores de ataque y defensa de Guatemala; la atacante Laura Cortéz junto a la
opuesta Jimena Castellanos llevaron a Guatemala arriba 2-0. En el tercer set, las atacantes
Hondureñas no pudieron detener el juego organizado por parte de las guatemaltecas, que
siguieron arriba todo el set. Las guatemaltecas fueron organizadas liderando con gran
ventaja de 40-23 en ataques, 5-3 en bloqueos y cometiendo menos errores (25-28).
Honduras encabezó el bloqueo 4-2. La atacante Laura Cortéz fue clave en el triunfo
guatemalteco con 20 puntos, acompañada por la opuesta Jimena Castellanos que anotó
11 puntos. La opuesta Rocío Duron lideró a Honduras con 10 puntos y la atacante Dazly
Duran aportó 8 puntos.
Cuba 3, República Dominicana 2
Cuba ganó el quinto lugar sobre República Dominicana en cinco sets 3-2 (25-14, 25-22, 14-
25, 21-25, 17-15). Cuba no tuvo resistencia por parte de República Dominicana logrando
una ventaja de 14-6 fácilmente, las dominicanas no tuvieron energía y permitieron que las
cubanas tuvieran un festín de puntos en el primer set. El segundo set fue distinto tras la
mejoría del ataque y el bloqueo por parte de República Dominicana; aun así Cuba se
mantuvo al frente 2-0 con un ataque balanceado entre cinco jugadoras. Las dominicanas
remontaron ganando el tercer y cuarto sets apoyadas por Sthefany Gonzalez, Romina
Cornelio y Flormarie Heredia forzando al set de desempate. La cubana Dayana Martínez
con fuerza sobre la red, anotando por ataques potentes y bloqueos efectivos, fue

servicio de Cuba fue imparable, crucial en su victoria con impresionante ventaja de 13-5

Medalla de Bronce: Mexico 3, Chile 1
México clasificó al Campeonato Mundial FIVB de la categoría tras ganar el juego por la
medalla de bronce de la Copa Panamericana de Voleibol Femenino U18 a Chile 3-1 (25-21,
25-27, 25-21, 25-15). Host México clasifica a su tercer Campeonato Mundial FIVB
consecutiva, ganando su segunda medalla en Copa Panamericana, ellas ganaron plata en
2011. México ganó el primer set con un juego calculador, enfocadas y manteniendo a
Chile bajo su control a través de Marian Ovalle y Melanie Parra al frente del grupo. Chile
empató el juego recuperándose de un déficit de cuatro puntos (16-20) llevándose el set
no antes de perder dos puntos de set a manos de Melanie Parra. Las anotadoras chilenas
fueron pacientes tras venir de abajo (11-16) por las centrales Elisa Sandrock y Constanza
Silva acompañadas por María Jesús en la esquina; pero México remontó para el 2-1
entrando al cuarto con una abrumadora ventaja de 13-5 gracias a una combinación de
ataques y errores de Chile. Las anfitrionas cerraron con ventaja 65-45 en ataques, 9-6 en
bloqueos, mínimo 5-4 en puntos de servicio y anotaron 22 puntos de errores del rival en
tanto cometieron 29 errores propios. Melanie Parra una vez más encabezó a México como
la máxima anotadora del juego con 26 puntos a través de 23 ataques y 3 bloqueos, la
jugadora opuesta Marian Ovalle acompañó con 20 puntos incluyendo 18 ataques y la
central Sofía Maldonado junto a Grecia Ung contribuyeron con 10 puntos cada una. María
Jesús Muñoz encabezó a Chile con 14 puntos incluyendo 13 ataques y un punto de saque,
seguida por la central Elisa Sandrock también con 14 puntos, la esquina Ignacia Badilla
agregó 12 puntos y la central Constanza Silva anotó 10 tantos.
Medalla de Oro: Perú 3, Puerto Rico 0
Perú es el campeón de la Copa Panamericana de Voleibol Femenino U18 derrotando a

cerró 26-24. En el segundo parcial, Perú no se rindió y se mantuvo siempre presionando,
encontrando el camino para superar a un errático Puerto Rico con amplia ventaja 18-10
encabezada por Alondra Alarcon y Janelly Ceopa; Puerto Rico tuvo pocas oportunidades
para responder. En el tercer set Puerto Rico inicó con fuerza con ventaja 10-7 pero Perú
no fue impaciente y respondió con mayor potencia para cerrar en sets corridos. Perú ganó
el título sobre Puerto Rico con ventaja de 42-34 en ataques y cometiendo menor cantidad
de errores (18-29). Puerto Rico fue superior en el bloqueo 7-4 y en servicio 3-1. La
atacante Janelly Ceopa encabezó a las anotadoras de Perú como la máxima anotadora del
juego con 15 puntos todos de ataques, la atacante Alondra Alarcón anotó 10 puntos todos
