AT&T EXPANDS MOBILE BROADBAND CAPACITY AND COVERAGE
IN ASHTABULA COUNTY
New Cell Sites Activated as Part of Ongoing AT&T Investment in Local Wireless Network
ASHTABULA, Ohio, Feb. 7, 2012 — As part of its continuing network investment to support growing
demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T* today announced the activation of 17
new mobile broadband cell sites in Ashtabula, Conneaut, Dorset, Geneva, Jefferson, Kingsville, North
Kingsville, Orwell and Saybrook that will enhance coverage for area residents and businesses. With
mobile broadband speeds, AT&T customers can surf the Web, download files faster, and enjoy the very
latest interactive mobile applications.
The new cell sites are one part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive investment and innovation to deliver
the nation’s best, most advanced mobile broadband experience for customers. With the nation’s fastest
mobile broadband network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice
and data capabilities.
In addition, AT&T announced the completion of a network enhancement to add new layers of
frequency, also known as ―carriers,‖ to 14 cell sites in Ashtabula, Conneaut, Geneva, Kingsville, North
Kingsville and Saybrook to more efficiently manage available spectrum and increase mobile broadband
capacity. The expansion helps manage ever-growing demand for mobile broadband services by
allocating more network resources for AT&T’s mobile broadband network.
CNN Money recently recognized AT&T for enhancing its wireless network. Last year, AT&T completed
150,000 network enhancements across the country, more than triple the year before, giving customers
2. more capacity and faster speeds. AT&T invested more than $1.4 billion in its Ohio wireless and wireline
networks from 2009 through 2011.
―We want you to have an extraordinary experience whether you’re making a phone call, sharing videos
and photos with friends, checking the latest scores, or keeping your business mobile on your AT&T
device. Smartphones, tablets and laptops are continuing to drive unprecedented demand for wireless
access everywhere. We’re investing in a combination of technologies right here in the Ashtabula
County area to meet these needs and ensure an advanced broadband experience for all our
customers,‖ said Larry Evans, vice president and general manager, AT&T Ohio and western
Pennsylvania.
AT&T Ohio state president, Tom Pelto, said his company’s local investment creates many advantages
for the people of Ohio. ―A recent study by the NDN think tank found that innovation has driven
continued investments to upgrade the wireless broadband infrastructure in America, including
transitions from 2G to 3G and now from 3G to 4G,‖ said Pelto. ―The world is going wireless, and this
technology is enabling, empowering, enriching and enhancing lives at work, at play and everywhere in
between. This investment has spurred significant new job creation and growth across all sectors of the
economy and has fostered employment for U.S. workers.‖
―This is fantastic news for Ashtabula County businesses and citizens who depend on high speed
wireless service each and every day,‖ said State Senator Capri Cafaro. ―By having this enhanced
service available, Ashtabula County becomes an even more attractive place to grow or start a
business.‖
AT&T’s mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of
technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the
world. AT&T has the broadest international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to
voice service in more than 225 countries and data service in more than 200 countries. AT&T also offers
voice and data roaming coverage on more than 135 major cruise ships, as well as mobile broadband
services in more than 130 countries.
3. ―AT&T’s investment to increase wireless network coverage in Ashtabula will help consumers and local
businesses, which in turn, will strengthen our local economy,‖ said State Representative Casey
Kozlowski. ―For Ashtabula, and Ohio, to be able to keep and create jobs we need access to the latest
technologies that the mobile network can offer our citizens and businesses.‖
AT&T also operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network** with nearly 30,000 hotspots in the U.S. and
provides access to nearly 190,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T
smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi
usage doesn’t count against customers’ monthly wireless data plans.
