What Kind of poem is it ? Identity is important in the poem as her fears of losing her fist language are about a key part of what makes her who she is.
Structure * The poem is written in three section: The poet expresses how hard is it for her to know two language, but neglect the one she feels most belongs to her. *Showing that although her ‘mother tongue’ dies during the day, it ‘grows back’ in her dreams at night, becoming strong and producing ‘blossoms’.
Language How many meanings does the word ‘tongue’ have in the poem? It is a part of the body- the part you speak with. It has also come to mean the language that you speak. The phrase ‘lost my tongue’ is used in a colloquial sense to mean that someone is tongue-tied and does not know what to say.
Poetics techniques Repetition of certain words such as ‘tongue’, ‘grows’, bud’ and ‘mouth’ works powerfully to emphasize the ideas of the poem: “It grows back, a stump of a shoot grows longer, grows moist, grows strong veins…”
Using Gujarati in the poemUsing Gujarati shows in the action the two language operating in the narrator’s life and therefore makes a powerful point in the poem. The Gujarati is positioned at the core of the poem with English either side of it.
Thank you
