Keynote presentation from East Coast Oracle Conference, Sept 2015. Jeff and Kellyn profile 2 members of the community and their before and after online personal transformations.
2. product manager on the DB team
I like to help people be better at ORCL
I’ve been told I have a ‘dry sense of
humor’
3. In a former life…
@hillbillyToad
‘that’ Toad guy
Great job, great career, not great for me
from WV but ‘hillbilly’ doesn’t help
Wanted to be ‘Jeff’ not someone else’s
product or brand
4. DBAKevlar
I like to block people….
Consulting Member of Technical Staff
for SCP Team, Enterprise Manager at
Oracle
5. Late Into the Game…
Always DBAKevlar
Been online since 2008-2009.
Big on mentoring others and teaching
the next generation of technologists.
6. Suggested Best Practices
Decide type of social media presence/online
persona you want to present.
But be authentic, find your ‘voice’
Separate personal and professional
Know what’s appropriate for each network
Privacy settings for personal as appropriate
Social media policies are YOUR FRIEND!
8. No, We’re Not Special
We worked at it.
There is [something] of a formula, (but
don’t ask Jeff for the algorithm, math is
not his strong suit…)
9. Yes, It is Important to Your
Career
77% of Prospective Employers Google
candidates.
43% pass on candidates either because
of what they ARE or AREN’T posting
online.

26. Connecting Tips
Don’t use the default, lame-O connection message
Remind the person how you know them, where
you may have seen them, or why you’d like to join
their network.
Don’t connect with just anybody- ensure they offer
value to your network.
27. Profile: Handle & Pic
Don’t tie yourself to a brand or tech
Be your OWN brand, e.g. DBAKevlar
28. Bio
Give people a REASON to follow you
Include a LINK
1. About.Me
2. LinkedIn
3. Blog/Website
29. Summary
Find your online persona
Build your own brand, not just a company’s
Figure out what social media makes sense
for the presence you wish to make.
Use different formats to broadcast to as
large an audience as possible.

We’ve done this talk before – but a general social media tips and tricks for the Oracle IT person. We wanted to focus this talk on how to use Social Media to reflect and empower your identity and career.
Tongue in cheek – ANYONE can do this
But you have to try, fail, try some more…
Some hiring processes are entirely made by Google searches
If we can’t find you online, we won’t hire you
And if we DO fine you, will we like or understand what we find?
The internet is easy, figuring out your brand – that’s the challenge
This slide is funnier when the animated GIFs work
We worked with 2 well known people in the Oracle space. Could we help them find and promote their personal brand?
What is ODTUG?
Monty is/was the President of the Oracle Development Tools User Group (ODTUG). Are there other reasons to care about Monty? What if he’s not the president anymore, then what?
His twitter bio said, in jest, ‘he is a butcher, baker, candlestick maker’. Funny, if you know the nursery rhyme. But it doesn’t help him define his brand, or help you to know Monty.
The true story, he went to a conference in Montreal and someone asked if he had brought any of his candlesticks.
Monty had no idea what they were talking about.
Problem!
What’s a Magi?
Do Magi’s make candles?
This is Monty’s blog.
His LinkedIn profile. Shouldn’t it say something like, I’m an Oracle Developer?
The hat is cool though.
Again with the President. Impressive, but is that how he wants to ID himself? And what happens when he’s not President anymore? And what is ODTUG?
Describe Monty in 30 seconds.
He wears a hat.
He’s President of something.
He jokes about making candles or something.
We have a problem. Actually, Monty has a problem.
Do you know how many people in IT today have never seen this movie?
So I (jeff) worked with Monty to come up with some ideas for his blog tagline, and what would become his central theme across all of his channels.
I thought the pig thing was great. Monty disagreed, but had an idea…
YES!
The hat makes sense now!
His new bio reflects his ‘country’ or laid back approach and reminds us that he talks and IS an Oracle developer.
I recognize this pic, this header…oh yeah, he has that blog about the pigs…I mean Oracle code and stuff.
Monty also found that now that his theme was clear, he was MORE motivated to write more. He knew what to write about, what his tone was.
Kellyn profiled another user, Ray Smith. Go find her Slideshare story, will update here ASAP, then come back and finish this.
