Three Fold Path To Wholeness
1. The work toward becoming whole engages the three insights of
1) WHERE DID I COME FROM?... why do I feel what I am feeling?,
2) WHAT AM I BECOMING?... looking toward the future with the tools and
strategies essential for a loving relationship with oneself and others, and
3) WHAT IS?--knowing what I am feeling and who I am in the present,
free of the fantasies of past and future.
WHOLENESS is active participation in the PRESENT, while walking the PATH of LOVE.
This presentation touches upon the traditions of
Sufism, Buddhism, and Depth Psychology
and inspires us to engage in the delightful work of watchfulness and wakefulness lifting the
Veils of Illusion and freeing the heart to truly LOVE.
2. Whether your destiny is glory or disgrace, Purify yourself of hatred and love of self.
Polish your mirror; and that sublime Beauty from the regions of mystery
Will shine as a flame from your heart as it did for the saints and prophets.
Then, with your heart on fire with that Splendor, the Secret of the Beloved will no longer be hidden.
~ 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jami
My heart, aflame in love, set afire every heart that came in touch with it.
~ Hazrat Inayat Khan
3. Hansel and Gretel are alive and well
And they're living in Berlin
She is a cocktail waitress
He had a part in a Fassbinder film
And they sit around at night now drinking schnapps and gin
And she says: Hansel, you're really bringing me down
And he says: Gretel, you can really be a bitch
He says: I've wasted my life on our stupid legend
When my one and only love was the wicked witch.
She said: What is history?
4. And he said: History is an angel
Being blown backwards into the future
He said: History is a pile of debris
And the angel wants to
Go back and fix things
To repair the things that have been broken
But there is a storm blowing from Paradise
And the storm keeps blowing the angel backwards into the future
And this storm, this storm is called Progress
Laurie Anderson The Dream Before (for Walter Benjamin)
5. You're out on the ocean and you get pulled down We're going down to the bottom.
Freefall to the bottom All the way to the bottom.
Like when you're drowning or falling asleep We get turned around.
You get turned around There is another world inside of this one.
And when you think you're swimming to the surface Rapture of the deep.
You're swimming straight down.
Down to the bottom. All the way to the bottom.
Secret codes and cryptograms We're going down to the bottom.
I'm lost in your words I'm swimming.
We're going down to the bottom. All the way to the bottom.
Rapture of the deep.
I got your letter. I couldn't read it. It was a cryptogram. There is another world spinning
Did it say Take me with you or Take me as I am? Inside of this one.
We're going down to the bottom.
All the way to the bottom. We get turned around.
There is another world spinning inside of this one.
I remember where I came from
There were tropical breezes and a wide open sea
I remember my childhood
I remember being free. ~ Laurie Anderson - Freefall
6. quot; The dream was always running ahead of me.
To catch up, to live for a moment in unison with it, that was the miracle.quot;
~ Anais Nin
7. When your object is, or seems to be,
In a mist, do not cover yourself with clouds
Because your object seems far off.
If you do, everything will become dark before you.
If you keep your light clear,
Then the ray shooting from your own soul
Will in time clear the mist.
8. But if you yourself are in confusion
Whether to have this object or that object or no object,
Then there is no hope for you.
You must ever bear in mind
That the light and life that go out from you to the object
Are quite as important as that light
Which comes to you from the object.
~ Hazrat Inayat Khan
9. “Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.
Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.”
~ Hans Margolius
10. God is Love, Lover, and Beloved. We don't see things as they are.
We see things as we are.
~Anais Nin
I look into the mirror
See myself, I'm over me
I need space for my desires
Have to dive into my fantasies
I know as soon as I'll arrive
Everything is possible
Cause no one has to hide
Beyond the invisible
Close your eyes It is time
Just feel and realize To break the chains of life
It is real and not a dream If you follow you will see
I'm in you and you're in me What's beyond reality
~ Beyond The Invisible -- Michael Cretu/David Fairstein
11. How do I engage the present?
What is it I do that affords me the
opportunity to be in the Now?
Compassion is the active principal.
“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of
the future, concentrate the mind
on the present moment.”
Buddha
12. Much of our clinical work
is geared toward accessing the present
in lieu of living in the illusions of the past or the future.
13. Hindus speak of Maya the delusion,
Taoists speak of the 10,000 things.
14. CBT, DBT, and EMDR
are all techniques
that push aside the tendency of the psyche
to engage in the defenses of lies,
to live in a world strengthened by clarity of mindfulness,
and to no longer be hampered by the
negative associations tied to the traumatic
incidents of the past.
15. Bismilla
We begin in the name of Allah, the most merciful, the most compassionate.
16. Wazifa—the 99 names of God.
The Sheik assigns any number of the 99 qualities of God to the adept as
Spiritual practice affording a means of balancing the
personality and moving Toward the One.
17. The teacher, through knowing the adept, is able to give that practice which will
afford balance and allow the path forward to be less filled with strife.
18. In a similar manner the Clinician can work through insight and
affirmation with the qualities needed by the Client
gifting them tools to move more freely into the future.
If Fear is the challenge, then Courage is to be cultivated.
If holding or control is impairing the Client, then acceptance is to be cultivated.
19. Within the use of any therapeutic technique Compassion for others and ultimately
for ourselves is the means by which we and our clients can engage in the Work.
This truism is from the perspective of the Client and the Clinician alike.
20. Empathy is defined by Kohut
(as cited in MacIsaac and Rowe 1989)
as, quot;the capacity to think and feel oneself
into the inner life of another personquot; (p. 15)
21. quot;... In my early professional years I
was asking the question: How can I
treat, or cure, or change this person?
Now I would phrase the question in
this way: How can I provide a
relationship which this person may
use for his own personal growth?quot;
~ Carl Rogers, On Becoming a Person
22. The natural tendency to become Whole
is facilitated by the compassionate
witnessing and the gentle guidance of the
Clinician for the Client.
In this envelope of Love the Client is
encouraged to loosen the chains that bind
and begin to enjoy their creative
birthright and freedom.
