2. LEARN TO CLIMB IN THE GUNKS
• HighXposure offers rock climbing instruction at
the Shawangunk Cliffs just west of New
Paltz, NY, only 90 minutes from New York City.

centers in the United States, the "Gunks" offer a
wide variety of high quality climbing
opportunities at every level from beginner to
expert. Easy access to the climbs and the friendly

3. TRAINING
• HighXposure teaches climbing to a wide cross
section of individuals. Our guides regularly
introduce people to the sport who have never
climbed before and are looking for an
authentic first climbing experience.
4. BOOKING INFORMATION
• We meet at 9:00am at the West Trapps trail
head, located in the West Trapps parking lot.

6. THE GUNKS
• You have undoubtedly noticed the apostrophe (') before the word 'Gunks as it appears
throughout this website. The apostrophe stands for syllables omitted from the word
"Shawangunks." This seems to be the closest spelling we have of the word used by the early
Dutch settlers to interpret the Native American word for our famous cliffs. Some linguists
suggest that the Native American pronunciation of the word was something like "Shon-gum."
However, since there are no speakers of that dialect alive today, pronunciation is up for grabs.
Suffice it to say that these cliffs have come to be internationally known, for all intents and
purposes, as the 'Gunks.
