2. “The proposal in this Bid Book represents the hopes and dreams
of perhaps the world’s most sports-loving nation.
Australia will welcome the world for a FIFA World Cup™, as
we have welcomed the world since our nationhood little more than
200 years ago.
Our Bid is financially and operationally secure. We are ready to host
FIFA’s flagship event, and FIFA can be certain Australia will fully deliver
on its responsibilities and obligations as a host nation.
The expansion of our excellent sports infrastructure will leave a long
and lasting benefit to football in Australia and the region.”
The Honourable Kevin Rudd MP
Prime Minister of Australia
“A quarter of Australians were born overseas, and three million
Australians speak a language other than English at home. Every nation
represented at a FIFA World Cup™ in Australia will have its own base of
support and be able to call Australia a “home away from home”.
As a member of the Asian Football Confederation, and a former
member of the Oceania Football Confederation, Australia can be a
bridge between these regions and an integral player in the development
of football in the Asia-Pacific.
As hosts, we would consider it our obligation and our proud duty, in
partnership with FIFA, to find ways to use the world’s greatest event to
bring help where it is needed most. Football is a powerful vehicle for
sustainable social cohesion, inclusion and equity.”
Frank Lowy AC
Chairman
Football Federation Australia
“Australia’s proposal is based on first class infrastructure, a culture of
flawless delivery and excellent facilities for all stakeholders.
Our technically excellent plan for a FIFA World Cup™ will be expertly
delivered in a festive, relaxed and secure manner and environment,
reflecting Australia’s passionate sporting and social culture, and the
population’s friendly and relaxed disposition.
Australia awaits – prepared, excited and passionate – in the hope that
FIFA will appoint us to host the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup™. If our
dreams are fulfilled, we stand by our unwavering commitment to
flawlessly deliver a truly unique, FIFA World Cup™.”
Ben Buckley
Chief Executive Officer

5. Why Australia?
• A technically excellent FIFA World Cup™ with the
relaxed and playful personality of Australia
• Bridging Oceania and south-east Asia, with
significant commercial and development opportunities
• The best experience for all fans, teams and FIFA
• Genuinely linking football and the FIFA World Cup™
with health, education and social outcomes
• A safe pair of hands – experience, stability and
certainty
• The world’s friendliest volunteers
• A tailor-made, compelling concept … Australia is ready
• A multicultural society making Australia a true
home-away-from-home
• Completing the dream – a new frontier and the last
continent for the FIFA World CupTM
6. A FIFA World Cup™ in Australia –
a real home away from home
Australia is one of the most culturally diverse and
dynamic societies in the world, with almost one quarter
of the population born overseas and a further 20% with
at least one parent born in another country.
In the most recent census, more than 270 ancestries
were identified by Australia’s population, making
Australia the ideal home-away-from-home for every
FIFA World Cup™ Participating Member Association.
Moreover, a FIFA World Cup™ in Australia will be
remembered for being fun. Australian people are
relaxed, friendly, engaging and carefree. As a nation
Australians are renowned for their endearing sense of
humour and getting on with the job.
7. The FIFA World Cup™ in
Australasia – a unique opportunity
Part of the world’s fastest-growing region Australia, a
member of the Asian Football Confederation, sits within
the largest FIFA World Cup™ audience. Over 60% of the
world’s population currently resides in Asia. By 2020 Asia’s
population is expected to be four times that of North
America and Europe combined.
Importantly, there are now more middle class consumers
in Asia than in the western world and their purchasing
power will increase as this number grows. The rise of
Asia’s middle class consumers offers exciting opportunities
for FIFA and its partners.
Australia is well situated in a sophisticated local sports
commercial market, while regionally the opportunities are
extensive. A report commissioned by Football Federation
Australia (FFA) from global consultants LEK and
PricewaterhouseCoopers highlighted:
• Global sport sponsorship revenues are growing most
rapidly in Asia
• Since 1990 Asia has consistently delivered the largest
television audience by region for the FIFA World Cup™
• A FIFA World Cup™ in Asia will ensure that global sports
sponsorship and television rights are maximised.
A time zone for more than 60% of the world’s population
Cumulative television viewers in Asia for the 2006
FIFA World Cup™ totalled just under nine billion, equivalent
to the combined audiences of Europe and Latin America.
The close alignment of Australia’s time zones to those
elsewhere within Asia enables optimal Asian television
audiences to be achieved.
Australia will work closely with FIFA to ensure that the
Match schedule is designed to maximise total television
audience numbers around the world.
8. A ‘No Worries’ experience for all
A reliable, event-experienced partner
Australia’s track record in staging major international
events is well documented. FIFA have in the past awarded
two major international tournaments to Australia, while
in the last decade the Olympic and Paralympic Games,
the Goodwill Games, the Rugby World Cup, the
Commonwealth Games and the World Masters Games
have chosen Australia. Major annual international sporting
events include the Australian Open, the Formula One
Grand Prix and horseracing’s Melbourne Cup.
In addition, nearly every week, the Australian sporting
calendar includes blockbuster matches in a number of
major sports. Staged at Australia’s premier venues,
these fixtures regularly attract huge crowds of up to
100,000 people. Australia is truly a nation of sport.
A safe and secure environment
The atmosphere at major sporting events in
Australia is reflective of the friendly, relaxed people
and their lifestyle. Australians enjoy a safe and
secure environment, where law enforcement is
effective, yet unobtrusive. Anti-social behaviour is
virtually non-existent. For players, officials, fans and
all other participants, an Australian FIFA World Cup™
experience will be all about football.
9. Unequivocal support from all levels of government
Australia is a stable democratic society. Without
exception, all capital works funding has been secured.
The provision of key government services, including
transportation, security, health, and customs and
immigration services, have been committed.
National, state and territory governments – and the
major political parties – unequivocally support the
Australian FIFA World Cup™ bid effort.
The world’s friendliest volunteers
The enduring volunteer culture in Australia, as
highlighted by the 50,000+ workforce who set new
international standards at the Sydney Olympics, will
ensure the same enthusiastic involvement in an
Australian FIFA World Cup™.
A safe pair of hands
Australia, with its stable and secure society, excellent
infrastructure and undoubted expertise and experience
in major event planning and operations, offers a
wonderfully safe pair of hands for the hosting of a
FIFA World Cup™.
FFA already has a plan in place for the first 100 days
should Australia be successful and will seek to set up a
LOC satellite office in Zurich to ensure complete ease of
communication with FIFA.

15. A FIFA World Cup™ for Australia, Asia
and Oceania
A FIFA World Cup™ in Australia promises to be the catalyst
for an explosion of emotion for more than 22 million people in
Australia, a further 17 million in Oceania and 600 million in
South-East Asia. It will generate boundless interest and
support for football throughout the region and will provide an
enormous boost to football development. Our stadia will have
a defined legacy, not just for football but the wider sporting
landscape in Australia.
The Football Australia Foundation would be established to
effectively manage the finals legacy in terms of football
development, together with sustainable social and human
development activities. The Foundation will be best placed to
harness the economic and wider social benefits associated
with hosting the tournament. It will work closely with FIFA and
our other partners to deliver positive change through football.
Such changes are central to the philosophy of FIFA and by
bringing the FIFA World Cup™ to Australia, the one remaining
continent that has yet to host the world’s greatest sporting
event, FIFA will complete their dream of unifying the world
through football.
Australia warmly
invites the world to
