1. United Jewish Federation of Tidewater
March 29, 2012
Dear Helen,
It gives us great pleasure to inform you that the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish
Federation of Tidewater has chosen you to be a recipient of the 2012 Esther Goldman Award
for Excellence in Holocaust Education. You will receive a full scholarship, accommodations,
and transportation to attend the Teacher Education Institute at the Virginia Holocaust
Museum in Richmond VA, and we will provide bus transportation for you to take your
students, up to a 100 maximum, to the Richmond Virginia Holocaust Museum. The details for
these awards will be part a package that you will receive by June 1, 2012.
This award is given annually to recognize teachers who have incorporated the critical lessons of
the Holocaust into their curriculum. We believe that in helping students understand the
connection between history and the moral decisions they make in their own lives, teachers
impart values of personal accountability, justice, and moral courage.
We congratulate you on being selected for this award from among your colleagues who
submitted entries. Your commitment to a more just and tolerant world affects not only your
students, but serves as a model of how educators can nurture values that all Americans
cherish.
Enclosed you will find an invitation to our local Holocaust remembrance commemoration,
Yom Hashoah, on Thursday, April 19th at Congregation Beth El, 422 Shirley Avenue, in Norfolk.
During the program, you will be recognized for your achievement. We invite you, your family,
and friends to attend, and ask that you be at the synagogue no later than 6:30 pm.
We congratulate you and look forward to greeting you at the Students and Educators’
registration table on April 19th. Please call Jan Johnson at 321-2323 to let her know how many
guests will be accompanying you.
Sincerely,
Elena Barr Baum Gail Flax
