AWESOME Aeronautical
Induction
• Welcome to ‘AWESOME Aeronautical’ (AA)
• You have been recruited into a top secret
elite aeroplane manufacturing company.
We need to build planes quickly!
• Your job is to make and maintain the
quality of our product
Forming Teams
• You have 1 minute to form 4 teams of
roughly equal size
• AND 1 team of three
• Each team is responsible for building one
type of Aeroplane component
• You will find all equipment on your tables
SDM
The Service Delivery Manger is
responsible for managing flow.
They will:
• Facilitates key meetings
• Support collaborative decision making
• Sequencing and scheduling of work
• Help the service understand its
performance
• Work to improve the overall service
The Manufacturing Work Flow
In your teams take 5 minutes to:
• Agree who will be the Service Delivery Manager
• Discuss your part design
• Practice putting it together
All planes must be broken up before we start!
Collecting Data
• We want to understand how long it takes
you to build your parts. You are to collect
the ‘Delivery Lead Time’ for your part of
the build
• We have created a metrics sheet to help
you
Orders Have Come In!
First Manufacturing Run (5 minutes)
• Daily Kanban (1 minute)
• Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes)
• 1 red plane
• 2 blue planes
• 1 black plane
Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
First Manufacturing Feedback Loop
• What went well?
• What didn’t go well?
• What did we learn?
• You have 3 minutes!
Introducing Scaling Out
• In Kanban we start with where we are now
and build out gradually to ensure that
services are hooked up
• We manage through policies and work in
progress limits.
We have identified some dependencies
• Between the Wing & Fuselage teams
• Between the Underframe & Tail teams
Scaling out planning
• Go back to your teams and plan this out!
Think about:
- Policies
- Review your WIP limits
- Working together agreements
- Delivery lead times
• You have 5 minutes
Queue Replenishment
• In this cadence we decide what to select from the pool of
options. By moving work to ‘Ready 'we are making a
commitment to complete it
• Typically no more than 30 minutes in length and includes
key decision makers and stakeholders
• On demand replenishment is desirable, but often hard to
coordinate
• Let’s do Queue Replenishment, we have more orders!
(3 minutes)
Second Manufacturing Run (5 minutes)
• Daily Kanban (1 minute)
• Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes)
• 2 red planes
• 1 blue plane
• 2 black planes
Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
Second Manufacturing Feedback Loops
• You have 3 minutes
Service Delivery Review
• In this cadence we look at whether we are delivering
according to customer expectations
• We look at a single kanban system and will include key
people from each activity (dev, test) in the meeting
• We compare current capabilities against fitness criteria
metrics and seek to balance demand & risk
• This session is typically 30 minutes in length
• Let’s conduct a Service Delivery Review (5 minutes)

• Go back to your teams and plan this out!

- Policies
- Review your WIP limits
- Working together agreements
- Delivery lead times
• New orders have come in!
• You have 3 minutes!
Delivery Planning Meeting
• In this cadence we plan what can be delivered and form a
commitment to our customers.
• Issues about delivery will be raised in this session, solved
and/or taken to the Risk Review cadence.
• Key attendees will include anyone who accepts the
deliveries or involved in the logistics. Specialists are present
for their technical knowledge and risk-assessment
capabilities.
• This is a decision making meeting and could be 1-2 hours.
• Let’s conduct a Delivery Planning (5 minutes)
Third Manufacturing Run (5 minutes)
• Daily Kanban (1 minute)
• Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes)
• 2 red planes
• 1 blue plane
• 2 black planes
• 1 blue and orange plane
• 1 green & yellow plane
Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
Risk Review
• In this cadence we look at problems that put our delivery capability at
risk
• Anyone with information, experience of recent blockers or managers
from dependent services may be in attendance at this meeting
• In this session we may review the assigned Class of Service and/or
explicit policies
• Techniques such as blocker clustering can be used to analyse the work.
• Sessions can be 1-2 hours in duration
• Let’s conduct a risk review (3 minutes)
Fourth Manufacturing Run (5 Minutes)
• Daily Kanban (1 minute)
• Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes)
• 4 red planes
• 4 blue plane
• 4 black planes
Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
Operations Review
• In this cadence we conduct a ‘Systems of Systems’ level
review. This means that more than one system needs to exist
and would be facilitated by a senior leadership team member
• We review the demand and capability for each system with a
particular focus on dependencies
• Improvement suggestions/actions/decisions or required
changes to strategy with designated owners are key outcomes
of this meeting.
• Duration can vary depending on number of services. Up to 2
hours.

  • 6. Welcome to AA! AWESOME Aeronautical
  • 7. Induction • Welcome to ‘AWESOME Aeronautical’ (AA) • You have been recruited into a top secret elite aeroplane manufacturing company. We need to build planes quickly! • Your job is to make and maintain the quality of our product
  • 8. Forming Teams • You have 1 minute to form 4 teams of roughly equal size • AND 1 team of three • Each team is responsible for building one type of Aeroplane component • You will find all equipment on your tables
  • 9. SDM The Service Delivery Manger is responsible for managing flow. They will: • Facilitates key meetings • Support collaborative decision making • Sequencing and scheduling of work • Help the service understand its performance • Work to improve the overall service
  • 10. The Manufacturing Work Flow In your teams take 5 minutes to: • Agree who will be the Service Delivery Manager • Discuss your part design • Practice putting it together All planes must be broken up before we start!
  • 11. Collecting Data • We want to understand how long it takes you to build your parts. You are to collect the ‘Delivery Lead Time’ for your part of the build • We have created a metrics sheet to help you
  • 13. First Manufacturing Run (5 minutes) • Daily Kanban (1 minute) • Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes) • 1 red plane • 2 blue planes • 1 black plane Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
  • 14. First Manufacturing Feedback Loop • What went well? • What didn’t go well? • What did we learn? • You have 3 minutes!
  • 15. Introducing Scaling Out • In Kanban we start with where we are now and build out gradually to ensure that services are hooked up • We manage through policies and work in progress limits. We have identified some dependencies • Between the Wing & Fuselage teams • Between the Underframe & Tail teams
  • 16. Scaling out planning • Go back to your teams and plan this out! Think about: - Policies - Review your WIP limits - Working together agreements - Delivery lead times • You have 5 minutes
  • 17. Queue Replenishment • In this cadence we decide what to select from the pool of options. By moving work to ‘Ready 'we are making a commitment to complete it • Typically no more than 30 minutes in length and includes key decision makers and stakeholders • On demand replenishment is desirable, but often hard to coordinate • Let’s do Queue Replenishment, we have more orders! (3 minutes)
  • 18. Second Manufacturing Run (5 minutes) • Daily Kanban (1 minute) • Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes) • 2 red planes • 1 blue plane • 2 black planes Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
  • 19. Second Manufacturing Feedback Loops • You have 3 minutes
  • 20. Service Delivery Review • In this cadence we look at whether we are delivering according to customer expectations • We look at a single kanban system and will include key people from each activity (dev, test) in the meeting • We compare current capabilities against fitness criteria metrics and seek to balance demand & risk • This session is typically 30 minutes in length • Let’s conduct a Service Delivery Review (5 minutes)
  • 21. Additional Scaling Out We’ve identified another dependency! • Go back to your teams and plan this out! Think about: - Policies - Review your WIP limits - Working together agreements - Delivery lead times • New orders have come in! • You have 3 minutes!
  • 22. Delivery Planning Meeting • In this cadence we plan what can be delivered and form a commitment to our customers. • Issues about delivery will be raised in this session, solved and/or taken to the Risk Review cadence. • Key attendees will include anyone who accepts the deliveries or involved in the logistics. Specialists are present for their technical knowledge and risk-assessment capabilities. • This is a decision making meeting and could be 1-2 hours. • Let’s conduct a Delivery Planning (5 minutes)
  • 23. Third Manufacturing Run (5 minutes) • Daily Kanban (1 minute) • Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes) • 2 red planes • 1 blue plane • 2 black planes • 1 blue and orange plane • 1 green & yellow plane Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
  • 24. Risk Review • In this cadence we look at problems that put our delivery capability at risk • Anyone with information, experience of recent blockers or managers from dependent services may be in attendance at this meeting • In this session we may review the assigned Class of Service and/or explicit policies • Techniques such as blocker clustering can be used to analyse the work. • Sessions can be 1-2 hours in duration • Let’s conduct a risk review (3 minutes)
  • 25. Fourth Manufacturing Run (5 Minutes) • Daily Kanban (1 minute) • Let’s make some planes! (4 minutes) • 4 red planes • 4 blue plane • 4 black planes Don’t forget to update the Lead Time chart!
  • 26. Operations Review • In this cadence we conduct a ‘Systems of Systems’ level review. This means that more than one system needs to exist and would be facilitated by a senior leadership team member • We review the demand and capability for each system with a particular focus on dependencies • Improvement suggestions/actions/decisions or required changes to strategy with designated owners are key outcomes of this meeting. • Duration can vary depending on number of services. Up to 2 hours.
