1-Mobile Technologies For Learning:

The mobile phone is the most widely used electronic
device on the planet, with about a third of the world’s
population having at least one.

At the present, In India and China learning solutions and
services will be integrated into mobile technologies as
mobile phones, PDAs, digital pen and paper.

China and India move towards mobile technology
because the large number of students in schools and
universities.

                                                                                                                                                       3

For Mobile Learning:
there are two distinct potential markets such as

a. The first one is the market of learning services for
   people that are without infrastructure
(accessibility to internet and e-learning may not
be as wide spread in rural or remote areas) and
   learners in developing economies .
b. The second one is the market of learning
services for people who’s jobs require them to
continuously move, people learning and receiving
information while visiting various sites and
   locations, certain types students needing
individualized learning education, on the move
   and while on external projects.

                                                                                                                                                5

Mobile Technology:
• In the United States the PDAs have already been
used in schools and for workers on the move and
this thing had significant results in terms of
  improved learning effectiveness.
• In Europe, mobile learning is beginning to develop,
and telecommunications companies such as Nokia
and Vodafone have already integrated these
technologies into their training and development
  systems.

                                                                                                                                        6

2-NetBooks

                                                                                                                        7

What is the Netbooks?

• Netbooks are a very small, light-weight, low-cost,
  energy-efficient notebook
• It is primarily used for Internet based services such as
web browsing, web video, e-mailing and instant
  messaging.
• Basically anything that would be required to take an e-
learning course. They are also suitable for light use
  running office and educational software.
• As these machines are cheaper than a traditional
laptop, I think we will start to see these being used as
training PC’s that can be moved or brought home by
  learners.

                                                                                                                                               8

3- Learning Nuggets

• A learning nugget is a small piece of content that can be
created on the fly, often using rapid development tools,
in response to an immediate training need.
• They are small modules of learning information for
people who need to learn more but don’t have much time
  available.
• Rapid e-learning is here, companies need to be able to
provide it as a service or identify why a custom built
solution is more appropriate. There is a split in the e-
learning industry with some still saying rapid e-learning is
  faster.
                                                                                                                                          9

Example on learning Nuggets:

• Courselets :
• A short, 10 to 15 minute, online training module that
employees can take at their desk. It provides employees
with just-in-time training without dedicating a large chunk
  of time to training.
• The Tell-me-more below has detailed information on
what courselets are and on why they are effective.
• Rapid eLearning - Process so that Subject Matter
Experts (SME) can quickly create courses.

                                                                                                                                      10

4-Online Video:

                                                                                                                          11
© 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
Online Video:
• 2008 was the year that online video went big. The year
saw a dramatic evolution in online video.
• 2009 will bring even more success to this industry.
• More people are watching online video and spending
  more time doing it.
• Online video finally has widespread acceptance as a
  delivery platform.
• With faster broadband and cheaper, better quality
equipment the barrier to entry has been dramatically
  reduced, if not wiped out.

                                                                                                                                     12
© 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
Online Video:
• The quality of video is also improving, YouTube has
gone high definition, widescreen, and is now offering
annotated video. Other providers are following and fast.
Flash Player, the leader in online video has much
improved video features, adopting the H.264 format
which is fast becoming the delivery method of choice.
• It’s not just pre-recorded video that is going to be big.
Live streaming video will become huge in 2009, with the
entry of big players like Ustream.tv. Live video is great
for events and training because it leaves users feeling
  empowered and provides immediate feedback

                                                                                                                                       13

5-Twitter:
• Evan William creates software that allows people to broadcast their
thoughts. He developed Blogger, the easy to use blogging tool that
Google later snapped up. In early 2006 he launched a Micro Blog
service called Twitter. Twitter lets people broadcast short messages
over the web, email, IM and phones to anyone in the world.
• The idea has really caught on with the “always on” connected crowd,
and while some people love the idea of a constant stream of
  updates, others are appalled.
• Twitter is becoming a serious platform for discourse and discussion.
More than a status app, it is being used as a first alert mechanism for
the dissemination of news and for immediate discussion surrounding
that news. It is the coverage of news events and the continued
emergence of citizen journalism that will push Twitter toward the
  mainstream this year.
                                                                                                                                             14

Twitter:

• Twitter is not the only Micro Blog service out there. For
instance Identi.ca allows you to create your own service
with only a small amount of technical knowledge. With
more ubiquitous broadband availability this type of
service will replace SMS as the means of sharing
thoughts, locations and opinions with friends.

                                                                                                                                      15

Semantic search Technologies:

                                                                                                                           16
© 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
6-Semantic Search Technologies:
• The semantic web is an extension of the World Wide
Web in which web content can be expressed not only in
  natural language.
• but also in a form that can be read and understood by
computers, thus permitting them to find, share and
  integrate information more easily.
• Semantics are going to be the next big thing in search
  engine technology.
• Google has come to dominate the search market,
however Google seems to believe that the only reason
people go online is to buy something.
                                                                                                                                    17

6-Semantic Search Technologies:
• They have made billions from advertising revenue and
are now in a monopoly position. People merely looking
for information use Google because they don’t have any
  other choice.
• A human will know that mouse and keyboards are
common computer peripherals, and can be categorized
as such. Computers can’t make this connection on their
own. Google does this via a person performing search
engine optimization (SEO) on their site. SEO centers
around the idea that as a business or individual, it’s
important to understand the sector you’re operating in.
                                                                                                                                     18
© 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
Semantic Search Technology:

• The semantic web will provide a formal description of
concepts, terms, and relationships within a given domain
  of knowledge .
• The semantic web, will not destroy Google.
• Google makes some great products and if any start up
company does produce a compelling semantic search
capability, Google will more than likely buy them.
• Google does perform better than it’s competitors Yahoo
or MSN, but there is always room for improvement.

                                                                                                                                     19

What does Semantic search Technology
 have to do with e-learning?

• As our e-learning libraries start to grow to include assets
in many formats and from many different locations, we
need to be able to search these effectively, using
traditional searches won’t fly, semantics are the best
answer. In 2009 we will hear a lot of hype about
semantics but the killer application or product has yet to
be found. If you would like to investigate this area more
take a look over Read Write Web a fantastic Web 2.0
  site.

7. Browser War

• We are currently in the middle of the second browser war. Since
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer won the first war against Netscape
Navigator many browsers have challenged the incumbent. Firefox,
Opera and Safari are the three that have continued to gain an
increasing share of the browser market.
• Numbers have always been disputed but in the past few months we
have seen Microsoft release beta 2 of Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla
update Firefox to version 3 and Google arrive with its own browser
for “a new age of rich internet applications” Chrome. Google even
took an unconventional approach of describing how Chrome works
in an online comic strip, available here

                                                                                                                                          21
© 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
Browser War:

• Now in an unprecedented move only 100 days and fifteen updates
later, Google has taken the “beta” label off Chrome. Given that the
company has traditionally become known for keeping products like
Gmail or Google Docs in perpetual beta, it is really putting pressure
on it’s competitors to innovate or lose market share.
• The exciting thing about all of this for 2009 is that all the main
browsers now contain tools for sharing and consuming linked data
online. Take for instance the Accelerators in Internet Explorer 8
which let you complete browsing activities like getting directions,
translating words, emailing your friends, checking Facebook and
more in just a few mouse clicks.

                                                                                                                                            22

Web Browser:

• It’s not clear which browser will win the war, but we will soon be at a
browser agnostic crossroads, where any content will run in any
browser - at least on the desktop for now.
• It is hard to see the IE monopoly crumble overnight, most users
don’t know or even care that a better option exists. And why should
they switch? Many of the problems you may have heard people
complain about with IE 6 have now been resolved in newer
versions. Currently I enjoy using Flock which is a Firefox variant that
has great social features to keep in touch with colleagues and
  friends.

                                                                                                                                            23

Open Education Resources:
• Today it is estimated that there are already more than 250
providers of commercial Learning Management Systems.
In addition, there were recently identified more than 40
open source LMS offerings (some of the most well known
are Moodle, ILIAS, eduplone, Claroline and SAKAI).
• Most of these products have extensive developer
communities and present strong arguments for
considering open source applications like an alternative to
commercial products. Some of the criteria that are in favor
of making a decision regarding an Open Source software
applications are related to cost savings, stability,
  performance and access to code.

                                                                                                                                            25

Open Education Resources:

• On the other hand, for ensuring that users in the near
future as well as the longer term have access to the best
available applications, these Open Source software
applications should be built on open standards.
• It remains to be seen if open source e-learning
technologies will capture the current or future market
share from commercial providers, but the important thing
in the process of making a decision regarding the
adoption of a certain e-learning software for education is
to consider all software options and make a choice
  based on their merits.
                                                                                                                                      26

9- Simulations in e-learning process

• For a number of years, simulations have played an
important role in the training activities of certain sectors,
like the defense, aviation and aeronautical industries in
several countries. They were not adopted until now on a
large scale as learning tools due to some factors like the
cost of development and the lack of tools for developing
high-quality simulations. These days we are in a different
situation and simulations are being adopted in other

Simulations in e-learning process

• Technology and cost barriers are continuing to shrink, opening up
the potential for wider adoption of simulation technology.
• Today, computer technologies, such as Macromedia Flash, have
become ubiquitous and e-learning vendors with simulation-
development expertise are trying to offer more industry- and topic-
  specific simulation templates.
• There are still barriers to be overcome, particularly in terms of
design innovation, but computed mediated simulations are expected
to gain a larger share of education and training activities.
Simulations may offer advantages over handbooks and they can
complement lectures, demonstrations and real world practice
  opportunities.

                                                                                                                                          28

Simulations in e-learning process

• The market for these kind of learning services will
probably continue to grow as simulation technologies
become more sophisticated and more cost effective to
  build.

  • 4. E-Learning in China Before Mobile Technology After Using Mobile Technology ~28% e-Learning Corporate Training © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 5. For Mobile Learning: there are two distinct potential markets such as a. The first one is the market of learning services for people that are without infrastructure (accessibility to internet and e-learning may not be as wide spread in rural or remote areas) and learners in developing economies . b. The second one is the market of learning services for people who’s jobs require them to continuously move, people learning and receiving information while visiting various sites and locations, certain types students needing individualized learning education, on the move and while on external projects. 5 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 6. Mobile Technology: • In the United States the PDAs have already been used in schools and for workers on the move and this thing had significant results in terms of improved learning effectiveness. • In Europe, mobile learning is beginning to develop, and telecommunications companies such as Nokia and Vodafone have already integrated these technologies into their training and development systems. 6 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. • 7. 2-NetBooks 7 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 8. What is the Netbooks? • Netbooks are a very small, light-weight, low-cost, energy-efficient notebook • It is primarily used for Internet based services such as web browsing, web video, e-mailing and instant messaging. • Basically anything that would be required to take an e- learning course. They are also suitable for light use running office and educational software. • As these machines are cheaper than a traditional laptop, I think we will start to see these being used as training PC’s that can be moved or brought home by learners. 8 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 9. 3- Learning Nuggets • A learning nugget is a small piece of content that can be created on the fly, often using rapid development tools, in response to an immediate training need. • They are small modules of learning information for people who need to learn more but don’t have much time available. • Rapid e-learning is here, companies need to be able to provide it as a service or identify why a custom built solution is more appropriate. There is a split in the e- learning industry with some still saying rapid e-learning is faster. 9 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 10. Example on learning Nuggets: • Courselets : • A short, 10 to 15 minute, online training module that employees can take at their desk. It provides employees with just-in-time training without dedicating a large chunk of time to training. • The Tell-me-more below has detailed information on what courselets are and on why they are effective. • Rapid eLearning - Process so that Subject Matter Experts (SME) can quickly create courses. 10 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 11. 4-Online Video: 11 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 12. Online Video: • 2008 was the year that online video went big. The year saw a dramatic evolution in online video. • 2009 will bring even more success to this industry. • More people are watching online video and spending more time doing it. • Online video finally has widespread acceptance as a delivery platform. • With faster broadband and cheaper, better quality equipment the barrier to entry has been dramatically reduced, if not wiped out. 12 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 13. Online Video: • The quality of video is also improving, YouTube has gone high definition, widescreen, and is now offering annotated video. Other providers are following and fast. Flash Player, the leader in online video has much improved video features, adopting the H.264 format which is fast becoming the delivery method of choice. • It’s not just pre-recorded video that is going to be big. Live streaming video will become huge in 2009, with the entry of big players like Ustream.tv. Live video is great for events and training because it leaves users feeling empowered and provides immediate feedback 13 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 14. 5-Twitter: • Evan William creates software that allows people to broadcast their thoughts. He developed Blogger, the easy to use blogging tool that Google later snapped up. In early 2006 he launched a Micro Blog service called Twitter. Twitter lets people broadcast short messages over the web, email, IM and phones to anyone in the world. • The idea has really caught on with the “always on” connected crowd, and while some people love the idea of a constant stream of updates, others are appalled. • Twitter is becoming a serious platform for discourse and discussion. More than a status app, it is being used as a first alert mechanism for the dissemination of news and for immediate discussion surrounding that news. It is the coverage of news events and the continued emergence of citizen journalism that will push Twitter toward the mainstream this year. 14 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 15. Twitter: • Twitter is not the only Micro Blog service out there. For instance Identi.ca allows you to create your own service with only a small amount of technical knowledge. With more ubiquitous broadband availability this type of service will replace SMS as the means of sharing thoughts, locations and opinions with friends. 15 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 16. Semantic search Technologies: 16 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 17. 6-Semantic Search Technologies: • The semantic web is an extension of the World Wide Web in which web content can be expressed not only in natural language. • but also in a form that can be read and understood by computers, thus permitting them to find, share and integrate information more easily. • Semantics are going to be the next big thing in search engine technology. • Google has come to dominate the search market, however Google seems to believe that the only reason people go online is to buy something. 17 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 18. 6-Semantic Search Technologies: • They have made billions from advertising revenue and are now in a monopoly position. People merely looking for information use Google because they don’t have any other choice. • A human will know that mouse and keyboards are common computer peripherals, and can be categorized as such. Computers can’t make this connection on their own. Google does this via a person performing search engine optimization (SEO) on their site. SEO centers around the idea that as a business or individual, it’s important to understand the sector you’re operating in. 18 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 19. Semantic Search Technology: • The semantic web will provide a formal description of concepts, terms, and relationships within a given domain of knowledge . • The semantic web, will not destroy Google. • Google makes some great products and if any start up company does produce a compelling semantic search capability, Google will more than likely buy them. • Google does perform better than it’s competitors Yahoo or MSN, but there is always room for improvement. 19 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 20. What does Semantic search Technology have to do with e-learning? • As our e-learning libraries start to grow to include assets in many formats and from many different locations, we need to be able to search these effectively, using traditional searches won’t fly, semantics are the best answer. In 2009 we will hear a lot of hype about semantics but the killer application or product has yet to be found. If you would like to investigate this area more take a look over Read Write Web a fantastic Web 2.0 site. 20 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 21. 7. Browser War • We are currently in the middle of the second browser war. Since Microsoft’s Internet Explorer won the first war against Netscape Navigator many browsers have challenged the incumbent. Firefox, Opera and Safari are the three that have continued to gain an increasing share of the browser market. • Numbers have always been disputed but in the past few months we have seen Microsoft release beta 2 of Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla update Firefox to version 3 and Google arrive with its own browser for “a new age of rich internet applications” Chrome. Google even took an unconventional approach of describing how Chrome works in an online comic strip, available here 21 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Thomson NETg KnowledgeNow is a service mark of Thomson Learning, Inc.
  • 22. Browser War: • Now in an unprecedented move only 100 days and fifteen updates later, Google has taken the “beta” label off Chrome. Given that the company has traditionally become known for keeping products like Gmail or Google Docs in perpetual beta, it is really putting pressure on it’s competitors to innovate or lose market share. • The exciting thing about all of this for 2009 is that all the main browsers now contain tools for sharing and consuming linked data online. Take for instance the Accelerators in Internet Explorer 8 which let you complete browsing activities like getting directions, translating words, emailing your friends, checking Facebook and more in just a few mouse clicks. 22 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. Web Browser: • It’s not clear which browser will win the war, but we will soon be at a browser agnostic crossroads, where any content will run in any browser - at least on the desktop for now. • It is hard to see the IE monopoly crumble overnight, most users don’t know or even care that a better option exists. And why should they switch? Many of the problems you may have heard people complain about with IE 6 have now been resolved in newer versions. Currently I enjoy using Flock which is a Firefox variant that has great social features to keep in touch with colleagues and friends. 23 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. • 25. Open Education Resources: • Today it is estimated that there are already more than 250 providers of commercial Learning Management Systems. In addition, there were recently identified more than 40 open source LMS offerings (some of the most well known are Moodle, ILIAS, eduplone, Claroline and SAKAI). • Most of these products have extensive developer communities and present strong arguments for considering open source applications like an alternative to commercial products. Some of the criteria that are in favor of making a decision regarding an Open Source software applications are related to cost savings, stability, performance and access to code. 25 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. • 26. Open Education Resources: • On the other hand, for ensuring that users in the near future as well as the longer term have access to the best available applications, these Open Source software applications should be built on open standards. • It remains to be seen if open source e-learning technologies will capture the current or future market share from commercial providers, but the important thing in the process of making a decision regarding the adoption of a certain e-learning software for education is to consider all software options and make a choice based on their merits. 26 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. • 27. 9- Simulations in e-learning process • For a number of years, simulations have played an important role in the training activities of certain sectors, like the defense, aviation and aeronautical industries in several countries. They were not adopted until now on a large scale as learning tools due to some factors like the cost of development and the lack of tools for developing high-quality simulations. These days we are in a different situation and simulations are being adopted in other industries and for a broad range of skills and competence development. 27 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. • 28. Simulations in e-learning process • Technology and cost barriers are continuing to shrink, opening up the potential for wider adoption of simulation technology. • Today, computer technologies, such as Macromedia Flash, have become ubiquitous and e-learning vendors with simulation- development expertise are trying to offer more industry- and topic- specific simulation templates. • There are still barriers to be overcome, particularly in terms of design innovation, but computed mediated simulations are expected to gain a larger share of education and training activities. Simulations may offer advantages over handbooks and they can complement lectures, demonstrations and real world practice opportunities. 28 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved. • 29. Simulations in e-learning process • The market for these kind of learning services will probably continue to grow as simulation technologies become more sophisticated and more cost effective to build. 29 © 2006 Thomson NETg, all rights reserved.
