This document discusses active learning in the virtual classroom. It defines active learning as providing opportunities for students to meaningfully engage with course content through talking, listening, writing, reading and reflecting. It provides examples of active learning strategies like interacting with materials, simulations and realia. It also discusses the benefits of active learning in more effectively teaching higher-order thinking and changing attitudes. Specific synchronous tools are discussed, like application sharing, interactive polling, chat and breakout rooms. Asynchronous strategies include discussion boards, questionnaires and quizzes.
