The lewis chessmen research notes
1. The Lewis Chessmen’s are named after the bay in which they were found in. They were
discovered in the west coast of Isle of Lewis on 1831 under a sand bank. The Lewis
Chessmen is a surviving medieval chess set.
There are 78 pieces in total. 67 of them are in the British museum, the remaining 11 are
located in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Most 78 pieces are made from
walrus ivory with the exception of a few, which are made from whale teeth instead.
The 78 pieces include 8 kings, 8 queens, 16 bishops, 15 knights, 12 rooks and 19 pawns. The
origins of the Chessmen are somewhat of a mystery but the majority of the sources online
think that the Chessmen were made in Norway in the 12th
century.
