Planning –
For the planning of my final water colour I first starting by collecting images off of the internet, from that
I compiled them into mood boards that are in my ideas generation I then either chose to mix together or
choose individual images from a wide range of sources for my character design.
I began by choosing the characters clothing I began my search by looking a particular long coat that I
preferred as my main point of my characters design. The image below is my coat that I worked from to
start my water colour study.
I used this image as the starting point of my production, the reason for
this is because I like the design and style of the coat, because I wanted a
character that would look old fashioned in a futuristic world.
I decided to work from this as I sketched it out on an A3 piece of paper. I
continued to look at this image for inspiration as I continued to work on
my water colour.
This image came to a conclusion when I started the water colour part of
my character as the colours and shades that are in the image I would not
need because I was using different colours and shades.
Also before starting my water colour I took a few sketches of this jacket so I could get a clear vision of
what I wanted to create and so it would be a stronger image by the end of production.
These are the initial sketches I took to
help me visualize my final design and
make what changes I needed to make the
sketch to a professional standard.
Whilst painting my water colour I made scans of the process as I continually added to my work. For my
coat I took a number of scan and compiled them below. To create the different shades and colour of
brown I used for this process I either added less or more water to the brush depending on if I needed a
darker or lighter shade of brown. To make it darker than not needing water I would add different
amounts of black to the brown to make it darker than just the original colour. Also if I didn’t need the
darker shade of brown anymore I would just remove with tissue of wash off the dark shade until it was
back to the original colour of brown.
After I had completed the first process of my character I continued to add more to my characters design,
taking inspiration from games such as Assassins creed I was able to start the next part of my water
colour.
The next part I decided to focus on was the characters shoulders and head to do this I took inspiration
from the Assassins creed universe. What I did was get a relevant and likeable image of some of the
games characters from the multiplayer from those characters I chose the ones that I most liked the
design and look of and used them as inspiration for my study.
This is the image that my inspiration came from. I didn’t use all of these images in my production of my
water colour study but I did take little bits from a few of them.
The picture illustrates the production of my shoulders for my character as you can see I have drawn out
the shoulders first then by using shades of grays I was able to capture the shoulders as if it was having a
light source shined upon it. I also gave my character a face mask which makes him more illusive and
mysterious. How I drew this was by sketching the shape to begin with and then by using black and a
little white the mask wouldn’t be a dull pitch black I also put a silver line through the mask to give it
some detail and make it not so plain that it is boring to look at.
I then began to work on my characters hood that I also took inspiration from the Assassins creed
franchise to do this I had to look carefully at how the hood goes around the characters head for this I
looked at images of the series main character.
This is the character that I looked at to get inspiration and realism for my hood design. Using only the
hood of the character for inspiration I didn’t need the full picture. So when I started to design the hood I
first drew it very lightly around where my characters head would go and where his mask already was.
When I started to paint the hood I decided to use similar shades and colours that I had used on the mask
and shoulders. Why I did this was because I didn’t want the hood to stand alone and by this I mean that I
didn’t want the hood to be the center of attention for my character and it would also not make my
character stand out in a crowd.
This my characters final hood design and it shows the techniques and work that I planned to work
towards. When I drew the hood I used greys that were a mixture of black and white I didn’t use too
much black because I didn’t want the character hood being too close to the colour black. I also outlined
the hood with a darker grey than the one I used for the inner parts of the hood. The reason for this was
just to add more detail to my characters design and overall look.
The next part of the character I was going to look at was the characters other shoulder, shirt and
trousers. Firstly I took images off of the internet to use as my inspiration for the designs I then drew
some sketches of jeans so that I could make the design stronger in the final product.
It didn’t seem necessary to draw initial sketches of the shirt as knew it would only be and colour to fill a
gap and I for the shoulder I decided to use the previous images of Assassins Creed from before and work
from that and what I had already done.
These are the drawings of the pants that I sketched and shaded. I took images off of the internet as a
guideline for these sketches. I decided to do the drawing from front to back so I could strengthen what I
didn’t have very much experience drawing before this time.
This is the final design that I made for these three pieces of clothing. To do this I started on the shoulder
as it would take the least time to draw and paint I made the design simple and then I painted it with red
mixed with a dab of black to make it more of a maroon colour, I then only used a little bit of water so
the colour wouldn’t become dilated and remove the shade of red that I created.
I then did the jeans as I wanted to get the hardest one out of the way. I started by drawing a simple
shape of jeans that you would regularly on a person I then took a sky blue colour mixed with some water
to make it lighter and faster to paint. I then later added a dark blue to the light to make a middle colour
between the two I then used that colour to make the creases and lines that are seen in the jeans. This
was so they looked worn and not brand new.
Then I moved to the shirt design and just got blue and black and mixed them together to make it dark
then I just filled in the white gap that was left in the middle of his chest.
The colours that I used for the clothing that I just completed are different and stand out from the ones I
already used, this is because I didn’t want the character to look to dull or drab and was to give him a
little bit of life and soul.
The final thing that I had to draw and paint was the characters face. When I did this I didn’t want the
character to show much emotion and because his face would mostly be covered by the mask and hood
only a small amount of detail and time was put in to create his face.
To start I thought I would draw the characters face not using any source material. I drew out the
characters eyes and a little bit of his nose. I then used a fine brush to paint the small details that I drew,
after which I then painted the colour of his face and I did this using a mixture of red and white to get a
strong pink colour to use for my character.
This is my characters final design and look, the planning that I showed above should be able to make this
same result if someone were to follow and complete this design for themselves.

Planning

  • 1. Planning – For the planning of my final water colour I first starting by collecting images off of the internet, from that I compiled them into mood boards that are in my ideas generation I then either chose to mix together or choose individual images from a wide range of sources for my character design. I began by choosing the characters clothing I began my search by looking a particular long coat that I preferred as my main point of my characters design. The image below is my coat that I worked from to start my water colour study. I used this image as the starting point of my production, the reason for this is because I like the design and style of the coat, because I wanted a character that would look old fashioned in a futuristic world. I decided to work from this as I sketched it out on an A3 piece of paper. I continued to look at this image for inspiration as I continued to work on my water colour. This image came to a conclusion when I started the water colour part of my character as the colours and shades that are in the image I would not need because I was using different colours and shades. Also before starting my water colour I took a few sketches of this jacket so I could get a clear vision of what I wanted to create and so it would be a stronger image by the end of production. These are the initial sketches I took to help me visualize my final design and make what changes I needed to make the sketch to a professional standard.
  • 2. Whilst painting my water colour I made scans of the process as I continually added to my work. For my coat I took a number of scan and compiled them below. To create the different shades and colour of brown I used for this process I either added less or more water to the brush depending on if I needed a darker or lighter shade of brown. To make it darker than not needing water I would add different amounts of black to the brown to make it darker than just the original colour. Also if I didn’t need the darker shade of brown anymore I would just remove with tissue of wash off the dark shade until it was back to the original colour of brown. After I had completed the first process of my character I continued to add more to my characters design, taking inspiration from games such as Assassins creed I was able to start the next part of my water colour. The next part I decided to focus on was the characters shoulders and head to do this I took inspiration from the Assassins creed universe. What I did was get a relevant and likeable image of some of the games characters from the multiplayer from those characters I chose the ones that I most liked the design and look of and used them as inspiration for my study.
  • 3. This is the image that my inspiration came from. I didn’t use all of these images in my production of my water colour study but I did take little bits from a few of them. The picture illustrates the production of my shoulders for my character as you can see I have drawn out the shoulders first then by using shades of grays I was able to capture the shoulders as if it was having a light source shined upon it. I also gave my character a face mask which makes him more illusive and mysterious. How I drew this was by sketching the shape to begin with and then by using black and a little white the mask wouldn’t be a dull pitch black I also put a silver line through the mask to give it some detail and make it not so plain that it is boring to look at. I then began to work on my characters hood that I also took inspiration from the Assassins creed franchise to do this I had to look carefully at how the hood goes around the characters head for this I looked at images of the series main character. This is the character that I looked at to get inspiration and realism for my hood design. Using only the hood of the character for inspiration I didn’t need the full picture. So when I started to design the hood I first drew it very lightly around where my characters head would go and where his mask already was. When I started to paint the hood I decided to use similar shades and colours that I had used on the mask and shoulders. Why I did this was because I didn’t want the hood to stand alone and by this I mean that I
  • 4. didn’t want the hood to be the center of attention for my character and it would also not make my character stand out in a crowd. This my characters final hood design and it shows the techniques and work that I planned to work towards. When I drew the hood I used greys that were a mixture of black and white I didn’t use too much black because I didn’t want the character hood being too close to the colour black. I also outlined the hood with a darker grey than the one I used for the inner parts of the hood. The reason for this was just to add more detail to my characters design and overall look. The next part of the character I was going to look at was the characters other shoulder, shirt and trousers. Firstly I took images off of the internet to use as my inspiration for the designs I then drew some sketches of jeans so that I could make the design stronger in the final product. It didn’t seem necessary to draw initial sketches of the shirt as knew it would only be and colour to fill a gap and I for the shoulder I decided to use the previous images of Assassins Creed from before and work from that and what I had already done.
  • 5. These are the drawings of the pants that I sketched and shaded. I took images off of the internet as a guideline for these sketches. I decided to do the drawing from front to back so I could strengthen what I didn’t have very much experience drawing before this time. This is the final design that I made for these three pieces of clothing. To do this I started on the shoulder as it would take the least time to draw and paint I made the design simple and then I painted it with red mixed with a dab of black to make it more of a maroon colour, I then only used a little bit of water so the colour wouldn’t become dilated and remove the shade of red that I created. I then did the jeans as I wanted to get the hardest one out of the way. I started by drawing a simple shape of jeans that you would regularly on a person I then took a sky blue colour mixed with some water to make it lighter and faster to paint. I then later added a dark blue to the light to make a middle colour between the two I then used that colour to make the creases and lines that are seen in the jeans. This was so they looked worn and not brand new. Then I moved to the shirt design and just got blue and black and mixed them together to make it dark then I just filled in the white gap that was left in the middle of his chest. The colours that I used for the clothing that I just completed are different and stand out from the ones I already used, this is because I didn’t want the character to look to dull or drab and was to give him a little bit of life and soul. The final thing that I had to draw and paint was the characters face. When I did this I didn’t want the character to show much emotion and because his face would mostly be covered by the mask and hood only a small amount of detail and time was put in to create his face.
  • 6. To start I thought I would draw the characters face not using any source material. I drew out the characters eyes and a little bit of his nose. I then used a fine brush to paint the small details that I drew, after which I then painted the colour of his face and I did this using a mixture of red and white to get a strong pink colour to use for my character. This is my characters final design and look, the planning that I showed above should be able to make this same result if someone were to follow and complete this design for themselves.
