Neighbourhood Forum.
Working Party
The Government’s Localism Act of 2011
provided an opportunity for Parishes,
Resident’s organisations and communities to
assemble a Neighbourhood Forum.
Formed from a diverse group of residents a
Forum would number a minimum of 21 persons
who would have to consult, study and
eventually agree on a written Plan.
This would include a map of the proposed
area. Once approved by the local Council the
Plan would be subject to a local referendum
arranged and paid for by the Council.
If carried through a Forum would give the
community statutory power to ‘guide’ local
development plans including regeneration and
conservation. Under the umbrella of the Hadley
Wood Association a working party has now met
with a Planning officer at
Enfield Council and learned more about the
process. It is clear from these preliminary
discussions that the formation of a
Neighbourhood Forum would involve a great
deal of work. However in the long term a Forum
would have more input into the future
development of Hadley Wood rather than being
in the current position of having no input at all.
The working party has elected Esther Kurland
as its Chairman and is meeting again soon. At
this stage the objective of the Working Party is
to decide if the community has enough ability,
manpower and energy to create a Forum and
whether the community is likely to benefit from
such an organisation. If that decision is taken,
the next step would be a major consultation
exercise within our Community.
Interested residents should contact
members of the working party via the Hadley
Wood Association on 02084497193 or email

Hadley Wood’s new
trees.
Residents in Parkgate Avenue and
Crescent, Covert way, Greenbrook and
Beech Hill Avenue will have noticed many
new young trees planted alongside the
roads. They all look healthy and have
clearly been planted by people who know
what they are doing.
These trees are much appreciated by
residents and are a credit to Enfield’s street
scene policies and their Regeneration and
Environment staff. We emailed Andy
Robinson Enfield’s Senior Arboricultural
Officer to express our appreciation and his
reply is printed in the Letters section.
We have also been on the receiving end
of some saplings from Sustrans the
national Charity which looks after UK’s path
and cycleways. Sustrans it was who
upgraded the path running from the station
up alongside the railway and through the
woods to Waggon Road. As they had to cut
down a few small trees in the process they
very generously donated fifteen young
saplings including Flowering Cherry, Oak
and Beech. These were planted with the
help of the Sustrans team and its volunteers
on a hot day in early April. Dotted about the
Hadley Wood Association grounds they
look very attractive already. Thanks go to
Sustrans and to the volunteers especially
local resident Dominic without whose
herculean efforts the planting would never
have been finished.

The NSPCC Barnet Appeals Committee
would like to thank all those that attended
its annual 'Spring STOP and SHOP', held at
4 Newmans Way on the 28th March. The
morning was a great success and the
£1,173 raised will go towards supporting
the work of this worthwhile and necessary
charity.
We have all been shocked recently by
headlines reporting alleged abuse of many
young victims. As a Committee we are
focused on continuing to raise awareness
and funds to extend the valuable work of
the NSPCC. To this end our next event is
our third Golf Day which is to be held on
Friday 6th June, kindly hosted by Hadley
Wood Golf Club.
Many local companies have already
kindly agreed to support the event by
donating Auction prizes, submitting a team,
sponsoring a hole …. If there is any way
that you feel you could help us to reach our
target of raising £18,000 please contact
Susan How on 07881 900050.
We are looking to help support valuable
services to children such as the Childline
Schools Service – the future of child
protection.

Marathon efforts.
At least two local residents ran in the London
marathon this year raising money for
charities. Sen Al Ahmadi ran again, this time
raising money for Chicken Shed. Sen is well
known amongst local runners. She started
the Hadley Wood Running Club and is now a
qualified running coach. This year she was
lucky enough to receive from Chicken Shed
a position in the Green Start section. This
gives runners a much more civilized starting
point, an easy access to the loos and the
doubtful pleasure of being with many
celebrities. When she had finished taking
‘selfies’ with Michael Owen, Amy Willerton,
Michel Roux and our rowing gold medallists
(Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins) she
ran the course in 4 hours 13 minutes raising
£2000 for Chicken Shed in the process.
(Over the last few years Sen and her
husband Rashid have raised approximately
£13000 running for charities!). Julie Norton
was also running. I asked her for some
details. She replies…
‘This was my fourth London marathon,
this time raising money for Parkinson’s UK.
My father has Parkinson’s and I wanted
to raise money for this charity in the hope
that one day a cure might be found for
such a debilitating disease. I have so far
raised over £1,500. I completed the
marathon in 3 hours 45 minutes after eight
months of training and approximately
1800 miles covered. A marathon is not
Bridge in Hadley Wood
Hadley Wood is very fortunate to have two
duplicate bridge clubs – both meet at the
Hadley Wood Association Centre – one on
a Tuesday and the other on a Friday. Play
commences at both clubs at 7.30 pm. The
Friday Club is affiliated to the EBU and
players receive EBU ranking and the
monthly magazine, but the Tuesday club is
not. Many members belong to both and a
very friendly atmosphere prevails in both
clubs. Robin Nunn, a bridge director of
Friday Club also runs group bridge lessons
for beginners and improvers. New
members welcomed. Further information as

Meadow project.
If you walk from the HWA Car park up the
field and turn left along the path through the
tree line leading to the bridge over the
railway you come to a clearing. To your left
lies a small field. This is the site of a joint
venture between the HWA and Hadley
Wood primary school to create a wildflower
meadow. The plan is to spend the spring
and summer months recording what is
actually growing there at the moment and
to see whether the field supports much bee
or butterfly life. Year 4 children from the
school will be doing this on a weekly basis
keeping a record of what they have found
and seen. In the meantime soil analysis will
be carried out to measure acidity/alkalinity,
nitrogen and phosphate concentrations so
that wildflower seeds appropriate for these
conditions can be planted into an
experimental lower section of the field.
Comparisons of flower and insect life in the
new (seeded) and old sections (untouched)
can then be made. Wildflowers do not do
well if the soil is fertile or fertilized. However
local knowledge suggests that this field has
not been farmed for at least 50 years. This
would be in favour of wildflower survival.
Wildflowers other enemy is grass. This has
to be regularly cut, the cuttings disposed of
and if necessary some centimetres of top
soil removed from the experimental lower
section of the field. There will be no
herbicides used. Making a wild flower
meadow is not an easy process but with
steady care to keep the grass at bay there
is every chance of a slow conversion of
this field to a meadow. It might take a few
years. It might end up looking like this! (see
photo left). If there are any experts or
enthusiasts in Hadley Wood who would
like to be involved please let me know.

The Hadley Wood Dance Centre was
established in the Hadley Wood Association
Centre 46 years ago. I have now been the
Principal of the school for over 30 years and
to mark this anniversary 135 pupils, ranging
in age from four years to adult, performed
the full- length ballet of The Nutcracker on
21st and 22nd March at The Wyllyotts
Theatre, Potters Bar to very supportive and
enthusiastic audiences. All the pupils
thoroughly enjoyed their theatrical experience
and, as a result of the three performances,
we have been able to send a donation of
£3125 to the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice.

8. The Wimbledon Tennis
Championships
I am a self-confessed tennis nut and look
forward every year to Wimbledon or The
Championships as it is often called. Indeed,
I could say that they are the highlight of the
summer for me.
On my retirement from the City, I was
fortunate to be accepted into the ranks of
the Honorary Stewards (HS) after some
rigorous questioning and on site training.
My day starts at 08.00 sharp when I join the
large team of stewards in Wimbledon Park
where the day queue for tickets is formed.
Some spectators will have queued
overnight with others arriving early in the
morning hoping to secure a ticket for a
major show court that day. Most people are
content to buy a Ground Pass which gives
access to all the outside courts and a
limited number of unreserved seats on
three show courts.
The queue will have been managed by
Honorary Stewards overnight, and some of
our team start at 06.00 in order to assist the
early queue management. A big team of
Day Stewards made up of young university
students bring enthusiastic support to the
overall effort. As the trains bring people
from far and wide, the queue quickly grows
and in no time the numbers can swell to
10,000 or more. Naturally, good weather
encourages people to come to Wimbledon,
but if a certain Scottish gentleman happens
to be playing that day, then the numbers
swell exponentially.
Working with the queues outside the
ground sounds like a rather unattractive
part of the job – in fact the opposite is true.
One meets people from all around the
world who share the same enthusiasm for
the game. The atmosphere is unique in my
experience, with everyone well behaved
and in high spirits in the anticipation of
seeing some tennis later in the day. Many
of the fans are seasoned Wimbledon
visitors and prefer to queue for tickets rather
than chance their luck in the official public
ballot. I would probably award the
Australian visitors the prize for the best
party makers! The role of the Honorary
Stewards is to marshal the
queues and provide assistance
and information to visitors. The
Service Stewards from H.M.
Forces and Emergency
Services perform a different but
vital role and they are all
exceptional people who are
committed to do their very best.
After a very quick lunch, a
posting to one of the show
courts is the reward for the
morning’s hard work. During
service breaks, spectators
come and go from the courts
and occasionally people move
during play. This presents a
constant challenge to keep
people in their seats to respect
both the players and spectators.
Mobile phones provide the
largest headache and the
biggest source of irritation to
fellow spectators, and while the vast
majority are happy to switch them off or put
them on silent mode, there are always one
or two serial offenders who we have to deal
with. Tact and diplomacy are as ever the
way forward and it is heartening to have the
gratitude of other spectators after dealing
with these types of situations. The Stewards
are required to stay until the end of play on
their courts which could be 9.00 p.m.
or even until 11.00 p.m. if a match is
running late on Centre Court. With extreme
exhaustion and aching legs and feet, I drive
home, collapse into bed and then rise
again at 05.45 to start the next day. The
Championships seem to reach a climax on
the middle Saturday and the second
Monday, after which the queues start to
reduce. This is because the singles
matches are concentrated mainly on Centre
Court, for which there are no on-day sales
after the second Wednesday. The reason is
a long-standing policy borne out of concern
for the Club’s neighbours over the
potentially enormous crowds which could
result – particularly with a British finalist – if
Centre Court tickets were still sold on the
gate.
At this stage it feels a little as though the
party is already over. Some of my fellow
Honorary Stewards bid farewell then and
return to their homes in various corners of
the UK. Not all these people are retired like
me and many have full time demanding
jobs. I meet people from all walks of life
including many from the professions – all
with one thing in common – a love of tennis.
I particularly like the discipline and order of
the whole Championships which run like
clockwork. This does not happen by
chance but through the meticulous
planning and the considerable efforts of so
many people. Many of the Honorary
Stewards return year after year and, if
invited to take part again, I will certainly do
so. It is seriously hard work but great fun,
and I am fortunate to have met some really
outstanding people.

My trip to South Africa April
2014
Some of my neighbours kindly sponsored me to raise
money for the school Rugby tour to South Africa back
in the Autumn, and I can’t believe I’ve had the
experience already. We were two teams raring to go
into battle against the strong lads from the heat of
South Africa.
On Friday 4th April, we set off on our journey to
Johannesburg, to then get another internal flight to
Cape Town. Straight after we got off the plane we didn’t
even go to our hotel. We left straight to conquer the
mighty Table Mountain. We spent four more days here,
including a match against some of the township lads.
THEY WERE MASSIVE!! All of the games except one
were bare foot, which upheld traditions in all SA Boys
Schools.
We then spent some time in the local town. This was
truly an amazing experience, meeting the township
people. Everyone saw a new light and the people we
met inspired us.
After Cape Town, we flew off to Durban to encounter
the mighty Zulus. When we got there we met the most
smiley and welcoming warriors in the world from the
beautiful plains in the Zulu cultural village, Shakaland.
There we learnt many of the Zulu ways of life. It really
taught us that the way we live is not the only way and
that we have to have open minds about learning from
these different cultures.
Also in Durban we went to a safari park and came face
to face with the great beasts of South Africa. This trip
really taught me new things about the world and that
how we live isn’t always the best way. When I was in the
township, I met an amazing little girl called Buombola. I
will never forget her. She told me something that
changed me as a person; she told me that her oldest
brother has to fight for food to keep his family alive, but
the most amazing thing was she always had a smile on
her face. That taught me something. They have probably
one of the worst places to live in the world, sometimes
without food but they are probably still the happiest
people in the world. Truly a humbling experience!
This trip was the best thing that has ever happened
to me and I will never forget it (even though I suffered
six stitches in my foot, it didn’t put me off one bit).

New Captain at Hadley
Wood Golf Club.
Following Mike Edwards’ excellent year as
Captain the club has welcomed Rob
Anderson to take his place. Rob is a
Yorkshireman from Harrogate. Both parents
were keen golfers and thus it was that he
started playing golf aged 14 yrs. Two years
later his mother was offered the post of
Secretary of the Ladies Golf Union based in
St Andrews. The family moved forthwith and
his mother, a fine golfer herself, occupied
her new office overlooking the 18th green
of the Old Course at St Andrews. This was
a nice move for his parents who had met
whilst university students there in the war
years. Rob joined one of the local golf clubs
in St Andrews paying an exorbitant £25.00
a year for the use of all four courses (there
are now seven!) This was 1978. (‘A few
years later’ says Rob ‘all hell broke loose’
when a three pound surcharge was added
for playing on the Old Course). After
finishing school Rob went to Warwick
University studied Maths and Economics
and after graduating moved to London to
become a trainee chartered accountant at
Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co, later KPMG.
Marrying Sally in 1986 he set up home in
Tottenham and then spent four years in
Sydney, Australia before returning to
Hertfordshire. Later he co-founded his own
company Edengene which advises large
companies on applying innovation
techniques to grow their business. He and
Sally went on to have three children, the
eldest two now being at university in St
Andrews and at Imperial College in London,
whilst the youngest is at Dame Alice
Owen’s school in Potters Bar. With a strong
musical background (his two sisters are
music teachers) all the
children sing and play
various instruments to a
high standard. Rob takes
particular pleasure in
joining them at gigs in his
role as drummer (‘not a
proper musician’). He
also takes part in the
band at the church in
Barnet which he and his
family regularly attend.
Rob joined HWGC in
1997. He is known for his
sense of humour, plays
off a handicap of 6 and is
a past captain of the
Scratch team. I asked
him whether he had any
plans for the year as
Captain. ‘Well, probably continuous
improvement rather than any radical
change’ says Rob. ‘I want to maintain the
traditions of this great club but would like to
try and make it a little more inclusive, family
friendly and informal. I would particularly
like to see a more integrated membership
with plenty of events that allow members to
get to know each other better’. He dashed
off to represent the club in a county event,
and I returned home reflecting that it looked
like being another very good year for the
golf club.

Le Petit Café opened its doors for the first
time in March. This little French style café is
situated at the heart of Hadley Wood just by
the tennis courts. I am there to look after you
and to offer you freshly ground coffee, cakes
lunches and snacks every day from 9-5pm
(Thursdays 9-3pm). I am also planning some
monthly events such as BBQ’s and lunches.
Come on in, sit back, relax and enjoy the
fresh food or have a spot of lunch. You can
even watch a game or two of tennis!

11. It started off, a morning like any other, when
I was in my bedroom listening to the sweet
tweet of the morning birds.
They were sparrows, my favourite bird.
Gliding swiftly, as light as a feather, beautiful
creatures. I reached out my arm. My
favourite one which I named Snowy came
and sat on it. I called him Snowy because
of his strange, white wings. Suddenly,
breaking the beautiful silence my Ma burst
in, shouting at me to come and eat
breakfast before school. Snowy jumped off
my arm in fright. I scowled and with a groan
of reply, I trudged downstairs.
Sitting at the table, I devoured my food
like a hungry wolf, keen to return to the
sparrows. “What’s up? “asked Ma. I didn’t
reply. She shook my shoulder as if she was
saying “come on tell me”. Her eyes were
deep, black, oily pools staring into mine.
She turned and opened the rickety door. As
quick as a cat pouncing on its prey I raced
outside trying to catch a glimpse of Snowy.
Suddenly, a screaming shout from Ma
filled the air. “Look out behind you” she
shouted frantically. I turned horrified as a
shell whizzed towards me. Luckily I ducked
and it sped through the back door and
exploded in the hallway.
Fear crept up my back like a cold hand. I
shrieked for my parents. Ma, Pa and my
brother leapt out the door. But what about
Snowy?
Quickly I raced up the half destroyed
stairs to my deserted room. Sure enough
there sat Snowy on the windowsill. Grabbing
him gently, I went back downstairs and shot
out of the house like a bullet. “Now where?”
questioned Ma angrily. Together we raced
out onto the streets. Everywhere were
children screaming, doctors kneeling on the
ground, timbers of wood scattered here and
there like a giant skeleton. I shivered at the
thought of living on the streets with no food
or water. Questions whizzed through my
mind. Would our house be ok? Would the
street get destroyed? Would I even survive?
I could hear my younger brother asking
questions to himself and sobbing every now
and then. I comforted him thinking how hard
it must be for him. I told him it would be ok
but on the inside I wasn’t so sure…
Half an hour passed and bombs were still
whizzing through the air with anger. Then
silence struck the street. Soon after that,
people started coming out of broken
houses wiping dirt from their forlorn faces
and looking around in disbelief.
I gazed up at the sky. The grey forbidding
clouds seemed to part and a ray of
sunshine filtered through. I reached into my
pocket. A frightened creature sat on my
arm, I held him up to the sun. He stretched
out his beautiful, white wings and flew into
the horizon to find a new home. I sighed
heavily. What would happen to us? Where
would our new home be?

Hadley Wood’s Primary
school. Essay contest.
Every half term, Hadley Wood school holds
an Arts Trophy event to celebrate the arts at
the school. The latest event was the ‘500
word’ competition which was launched by
BBC Radio 2. Some of the entries were
amazing!
In the final, the teacher of the overall
winners from each class read the stories to
the rest of the school and the judges. The
children were delighted to welcome back
Mrs Keane, a former teacher who with the
Editor was kind enough to judge the
awards.
The winning stories were beautifully
crafted and showed that all the learning that
the children have been doing over the year
really had an impact.

Dear Editor Many thanks for the email
regarding the new trees recently planted
within the Hadley Wood area. The trees
were planted as part of our annual re-
placement planting programme, this area
of EN4 receiving approximately 50 new
trees of the 400 we had funding for. We also
applied for a grant from the Mayors
RELEAF scheme that resulted in a further
90 trees and along with other funding
managed to plant a total of approximately
550 trees borough wide just on the
highways in Enfield. All of the trees planted
in the EN4 area are Ornamental other than
4 x Ginkos that probably fall into the Forest
type category. Although they are very slow
growing, all trees will provide many
environmental ecological and social
benefits. They will blossom and some will
produce small ornamental fruits all of which
will benefit the wildlife and the environment
for the area. We are keen to continue this
planting programme in the EN4 area to
replenish stock as part of next winters
planting programme so if any residents
would like trees in other roads please let me
have a list of sites and we will survey and
see if we can accommodate any requests.
Each year I have to apply for funding for
tree planting. Any evidence that our efforts
are being appreciated by residents of the
borough helps with acquiring the funding
required to allow us to ensure Enfield's
streets remain tree lined for many years to
come.
