GRAPHICAL STYLE
This presentation will discuss all the different
graphical styles as well as colour theory and how it
relates to graphical styles in games. I will briefly
introduce what each style is and discuss and
evaluate examples of art styles in games.
2. COLOUR THEORY
Color theory is the study of color and its role in art and
design. It is an observation of color, how color is
formed, how colors are arranged, and how they connect.
An example of the color theory is the color will if you split
the will in half colour is divided into cool and warm, the
colours tint and shade. Blue is considered to be the cool
colour and red the warm. Colour theory plays a big part in
what they want a person to feel.
It relates to graphical styles in games for example the
Colour themes on screen, if you loose or die the shading of
level might get darker.
3. Cel shaded-which is also known as toon shading
is a type of non-photorealistic design which makes
computer graphics to give the impression to be
hand-drawn. It uses simple colours and is often
used to imitate the style of a comic book or cartoon.
Games such as Naruto,Simpson,Dragon Ball Z and
many others use cell shaded graphics to give games
characters and environment a certain feel. This feel
is to make it look like your playing in a cartoon.
4. The Legend of Zelda: The
Wind Waker
This game is one of the most famous
cel-shaded game, it has cartoon
styled characters and uses bold
colours, it only uses a few shades of
each colour for the object. Its a very
great artistic design and brings a
great smoothness to the cell shading.
There's a Handful of bright colours
and it appears hand drawn, its a good
example of a cel-shaded game the
style has been used because its
results can completely change the
„feel‟ of a game which is why some
games are produced entirely using
cel-shading. If the game had been
done using a photorealistic art style
the tone and feel of the game would
change it would be more serious.
5. Naruto
Naruto is a cel-shaded game it uses
simple colours and its almost
identical to the anime. The games
uses plenty of visual effects, like
fire, smoke, light, etc. It really looks
like its being drawn in real time.
Sustaining all the characteristics
that represent the original 2D series
the character named Naruto has a
very simplistic feel like that of
hand-drawn animation. The Fire
only uses two colours yellow and
dark orange so it gives illusion of
fire without the complexity. The
cartoon is based on same visual
style as anime, it has been used
because its some what a recent
addition to computer graphics.
6. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai
Tenkaichi 3
Dragon Ball Z is a cel-shaded
game it recreates a style of a
traditional 2D series. It uses the
3D graphics and preserves all
the characteristics that show all
the original hand drawn
animations. The style has been
used because The consequence
of cel shading is that it gives
everything an airy, physically
light feeling because there is
generally a more smooth
texture and lighting in the
game.
7. Genre
The genres of games cel-shading is most
commonly used in are comedic games or games for
young children, the effect on a players experience
is it gives models a simple and clean cartoon look
many games started using the style because it was
so new and fresh. People have a cartoony
appearance when play cell-shaded games. They
tend to have a much more original feel to them.
8. Evaluate
I‟ve noticed that Cel Shading is a Very difficult
technique Cel Shading is not a very appreciated
technique, some people think that it is simple and
childish.
9. Photorealism-
it is the genre of how a painting is
based by using cameras and photographs, to create
something that appears to be photographic. The images
look so real that they are hard to recognize from
photographs. Realist graphics are used to make a game
look real e.g. the environment. Video games have to
render their graphics in real time, an example of a
photorealistic game is a first person shooter game like
call of duty.
10. Call of duty
Call of duty is shown to be a
game that incorporates
photorealism. Companies
have decided to use more
advanced technology so the
game can look as real as
possible using shadow and
lighting effects, and highly
detailed surroundings. The
style has been used because
it wants to give off a effect of
realism, it suits the game e
feel of the game is to make
the player feel like its reality.
11. Battlefield
Battlefield is a photorealism
game, it looks as real as
possible and also contains
human characters.
Photorealism has only just
started to come out in video
games. The style has been
used because they want
things to look as real as
possible, it helps set the feel
and tone of the game by
making it look as real as
possible.
12. Crysis
This is a photorealistic
game, it has human life
characters and the
game looks as real as
possible using the right
colours and effects. The
style has been used
because the realism
helps the audience
engage in the game and
in comparison to real
life its more gruesome
and real. It helps
gamers connect to the
game and be apart of it.
13. Genre
Photorealism can appear in any genre from actionadventure to horror. Most games that are
photorealism are first person shooter games, It
gives the player a feeling of “being there” and it
allows the player to focus on aiming. There are also
ever-expanding first-person shooter games, such as
battlefield, call of duty and killzone.
14. Evaluate
I‟ve noticed that photorealism is a well liked
technique, it makes the audience feel as if they are
the character within the game.
15. Exaggeration- it is the style where characters
are sometimes not humans and there
exaggerated to look a certain way for example
anime games such as dragon quest is a
exaggerated game.
16. Final Fantasy
Final fantasy is a game of
exaggeration, the art style
concentrates on using
over the top graphics that
make the game seem like
it is not meant to be taken
very serious. It does not
look cartoon like or
photorealistic as you can
see. The style is tacticalrole playing, action roleplaying, massively
multiplayer online roleplaying , racing, thirdperson shooter and
fighting.
17. Devil may cry
Devil may cry is a
exaggerated game the
proportions of things can be
much exaggerated,
characters features have
become more over dramatic
the style looks almost
cartoon. Colours and edges
are very defined and look
very similar to the art in
animes.The style has been
used because its very over
the top the weapons and
movements. It gives an
effect of imagination.
18. Fullmetal Alchemist
Exaggerated game in the
styles of anime and
manga, minimizing facial
features and increasing
sizes of limbs heads and so
on, style can be extended
into other forms of cartoon
and comic visuals. The
style has been used
because it‟s a clearly
imaginative and graphical.
It suits the game.
19. Genre
Exaggeration can appear in the anime genre the art
style concentrates on using over the top graphics
and the proportions of things are very much
exaggerated.
20. Evaluate
I have noticed that exaggeration is some what a
well liked technique many game players who watch
anime series really enjoy exaggerated video games
it gives them a feeling of running away from the
real world.
21. Abstract-it is a way in which a programmer
simplifies something reducing it to a few essentials
and basic forms instead of trying to reproduce it.
Things are represented in a way that do not look
familiar.
22. The Unfinished Swan
Abstract game it‟s a white
canvas and the objective is
to throw black paint making
objects visible. The main
mechanic which is the key
element to the game is
exploration. The style has
been used because its an
adventure game and it is
exactly like abstract art the
game fits well with the
graphical style.
23. Child of Eden
This is an abstract game it
does not resemble realism
in anyway and looks very
unrealistic. The style
usually makes use of lots of
shapes and lines that don‟t
really resemble any object
in real life. The style has
been used because its
more of a strategy game
and it doesn‟t have
animations.
24. World of Goo
Abstract game the shapes
and characters in this are
strange in shape and colors
and never resemble
humans, they look like
no other shape seen before
they are unique and it is
sometimes hard to make
out what they are. The style
has been used in this game
because its simple and
doesn‟t take much time to
do it also doesn‟t have a
theme to it.
25. Genre
Abstract can appear in artistic, puzzle and creative
games. They normally don‟t have a theme just a
background. There more strategy and puzzle
games.
26. Evaluate
I have noticed that abstract art style is the total
opposite to photo realism, it don‟t resemble realism
in anyway it has features that are very un realistic.
27. Colour Perception
The colour red is a colour perception
because when for example a character
in a game dies the screen will change
colour maybe turning into a dark
gloomy red and black colour, showing
that the person has died. For example
the picture shows a call of duty game
where the character your playing has
lost the level and died.
Also if you exceed a level the screen
may get brighter or the colour will
change for a different level. For
example the game urban basketball
shows that when the character in this
game wins the use of bright colours
and big letters are used to show that
they‟ve accomplished a task and won
the level.
