❑ Government
declares
highway
projects
worth
USD
93
billion
The
Union
Government
has
approved
projects
worth
USD
93
billion,
including
the
National
Highways
Building
Project’s
(NHDP)
USD
45
billion
for
20,000
km
road
building
-‐
one
of
the
world’s
largest
government-‐initiated
development
programmes.
It
plans
to
award
further
highway
projects
of
10,000
km
this
year.
Substantial
reforms
have
been
undertaken
to
generate
financially
attractive
projects
and
offer
investors
"unique
opportunities”,
such
as
100
percent
tax
exemption
for
5
years
and
30
percent
relief
for
the
next
5
years,
to
be
availed
of
in
20
years.

Smaller
cities
pip
metros
to
the
Smart
City
list
Several
smaller
cities
such
as
Sharif
in
Bihar,
Moradabad
and
Saharanpur
in
U.P.,
Dharamsala
in
Himachal
Pradesh
and
Shivamogga
in
Karnataka
have
found
a
place
on
the
Urban
Development
Ministry’s
Smart
City
list.
Uttar
Pradesh
has
bagged
a
maximum
of
13
nominations.
As
of
now,
the
list
includes
the
names
of
98
cities
that
will
be
given
technical,
financial
and
policy
facilitation
involved
in
making
100
cities
smart.
These
cities
will
also
receive
central
funding
of
Rs
500
crore
in
the
next
five
years.
❑ Andhra
Pradesh
approves
2
lakh
houses
for
rural
poor
The
Andhra
Pradesh
government
has
approved
two
lakh
houses
for
the
rural
Scheduled
Caste
(SC),
Scheduled
Tribe
(ST)
and
Other
Backward
Classes
(OBC)
communities.
The
government
will
offer
a
subsidy
of
INR
1.50
lakh
for
SCs
and
STs
and
INR
1.10
lakh
for
OBCs
for
the
houses,
each
measuring
270
square
feet.
It
also
plans
to
introduce
a
new
housing
scheme
for
the
urban
poor
to
assist
them
with
subsidy
and
bank
loan
facility.
❑ Government
plans
to
develop
7,000
km
of
National
Highways
The
Ministry
of
Road
Transport
and
Highways
plans
to
develop
7,000
kms
of
National
Highways
at
a
projected
cost
of
INR
80,000
crore
under
the
Bharatmala
project.
This
is
aimed
at
improving
connectivity
in
the
border
and
coastal
areas.
However,
the
project
is
yet
to
be
formally
launched.
The
preparation
of
project
report
with
details
is
expected
to
take
about
one
year,
though
bids
for
project
preparation
have
been
called.

Maharashtra
to
launch
'Smart
Villages'
The
Government
of
Maharashtra
plans
to
launch
'Smart
Villages‘
in
line
with
the
Center’s
‘Smart
City’
scheme.
Village
development
plans
will
be
focused
on
renewable
energy,
health,
underground
water
supply,
underground
drainage
system,
hospital
and
education.
Patoda
in
Aurangabad
district
and
Deogaon
in
the
Melghat
region
are
the
model
villages
for
the
program.
The
selection
criteria
of
the
villages
will
be
similar
to
that
of
Sansad
Adarsh
Gram
Yojana
and
100
out
of
400
villages
will
be
considered
in
the
first
phase.

❑ Nagar
Van-‐Udyan
Yojana
to
grow
200
'city
forests'
Over
the
next
five
years,
the
Central
Government
intends
to
develop
200
'city
forests'
through
the
Nagar
Van-‐Udyan
Yojana
project
to
increase
and
protect
the
country’s
green
cover
in
the
urban
areas.
It
also
plans
to
create
environmental
awareness
and
protection
through
'school
nursery'
schemes.
Initially,
at
least
one
'city
forest'
will
be
developed
on
20
-‐
100
hectare
of
forest
land
in
cities
with
municipal
corporations.
A
one-‐time
financial
aid
for
the
purpose
will
be
provided
by
the
environment
ministry.
❑ Permanent
'green
corridor'
for
Mumbai
The
Maharashtra
government
has
plans
to
create
a
'green
corridor'
in
Mumbai
for
the
smooth
and
rapid
transportation
of
critical
patients
to
hospitals,
so
that
patients
who
need
immediate
treatment
can
reach
hospitals
without
wasting
time
in
traffic
snarls.
Cards
announcing
how
critical
the
patient
is
will
be
pasted
on
the
ambulances.
❑ India,
Egypt
to
tie-‐up
for
waterways
development
India
and
Egypt
are
working
to
improve
bilateral
ties
to
develop
the
inland
waterways
and
ports
sectors
and
are
scheduled
to
sign
a
Memorandum
of
Understanding
(MoU)
in
this
regard.
Innovative
financing
through
public,
private,
partnership
and
use
of
new
technology
in
areas
of
green
transport,
river
transport
&
ports
were
discussed.
Currently
India
has
only
five
national
waterways;
conversion
of
101
rivers
into
national
waterways
across
the
country
has
already
been
announced.
❑ National
Highways
to
be
upgraded
Plans
to
convert
eight
National
Highways
into
world-‐class
express
highways
have
been
undertaken.
The
stretches
include
249
km
Delhi-‐Chandigarh
section
of
NH-‐1
and
NH-‐22;
334
km
of
Bangalore-‐Chennai
section
of
NH-‐4;
261
km
of
Delhi-‐Jaipur
section
of
NH-‐8;
277
km
Kolkata-‐Dhanbad
stretch
of
NH-‐2;
66
km
Delhi-‐Meerut
section
of
NH-‐58
and
135
km
length
of
Eastern
Peripheral
Expressway.
The
upgraded
express
highways
will
be
of
world
class
quality
and
specifications
and
will
result
in
huge
savings
in
fuel
cost.

❑ NHAI
introduces
ETC
system
The
National
Highway
Authority
of
India
(NHAI)
has
introduced
Electronic
Toll
Collection
(ETC)
system
at
Dappar
toll
plaza
in
Mohali,
by
the
integration
of
all
the
toll
plazas
on
the
Delhi-‐Chandigarh
stretch.
This
is
the
third
stretch
of
NHAI
where
ETC
has
been
introduced.
The
facility
is
already
effective
on
Delhi-‐
Mumbai
and
Bangalore-‐Chennai
stretch.
❑ JICA
interested
in
building
trans-‐harbour
link
Japan
International
Cooperation
Agency
(JICA)
has
shown
interest
in
the
construction
of
a
trans-‐harbour
link
between
Mumbai
and
Navi
Mumbai.
The
link
is
proposed
to
be
a
22-‐km
freeway,
which
will
connect
Mumbai
with
Navi
Mumbai
across
Thane.
❑ NHAI
to
widen
NH-‐24,
tackle
congestion
The
NHAI
has
floated
tenders
for
a
14-‐lane,
28-‐km
highway
from
Nizamuddin
Bridge
to
Dasna
in
Western
Uttar
Pradesh
to
decongest
the
NH-‐24,
connecting
Delhi
with
Ghaziabad,
Noida
and
several
other
NCR
towns.
Of
the
14
lanes,
six
(three
on
either
side)
are
planned
to
be
designed
for
high
speed
vehicular
traffic
and
the
other
eight
lanes
(four
on
either
side)
is
for
normal
highway.
The
project
cost
from
Nizamuddin
to
Hapur
(49
km)
is
estimated
to
be
about
INR
3,000
crore.
Investment

❑ Tata
Power
to
expand
Mundra
UMPP
Tata
Power
has
plans
to
expand
Mundra
Ultra
Mega
Power
Project
(UMPP)
by
adding
two
more
units
of
800
megawatts
(Mw)
each.
This
will
increase
the
capacity
of
the
Mundra
UMPP
to
5,600
Mw
from
4,000
Mw.
The
company
is
presently
involved
in
securing
environment
clearances
and
other
statutory
clearances
for
the
project,
with
the
Ministry
of
Environment
and
Forest
and
the
Ministry
of
Power.
