Haryana beefs up power supply
The Haryana government will commission 215 additional power sub-stations of various capacities in the
next three years, in order to expand power transmission and distribution system in the state. The state
government also aims to augment nearly 418 existing sub-stations and lay 3,171 km transmission and
distribution lines, by 2018. The state has been allocated INR 316 crore under the 'Deen Dayal Upadhyaya
Gram Jyoti Yojana and a sum of INR 390 crore under the Integrated Power Development Scheme by the
central government for distribution stability in the rural and urban areas, respectively. A Smart Grid in
Gurgaon at an estimated cost of INR 7,000 crore is also in the pipeline. Further, the state has decided to
phase out old and inefficient units and replace them with new 800-MW supercritical units.
NPCIL to restart Kudankulam nuclear reactor
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) expects to restart generation at its first 1,000
MW unit at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in December 2015. The reactor is connected to the
southern grid. The unit was shut down for annual maintenance and refueling, before which it was
operating at 60 percent capacity. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has issued a five year operating
licence for the plant. The NPCIL is building two more 1,000 MW plants with Russian equipment at a cost
of over INR 17,000 crore.

Hindustan Power Projects Private Limited (HPPPL) has conducted a boiler light-up test for the second unit
of Anuppur thermal project in Madhya Pradesh. The success of the test signifies that the boiler is ready
for the power generation process. The company is commissioning 1,200 MW Phase 1 (600 x 2 units) at
the power plant and has already started the work for steam blowing and synchronization of the unit well
within the scheduled timeline. The project has achieved critical milestones in terms of coal and water

AC sales to fuel power consumption
India is expected to witness a sharp rise in power consumption due to rise in the volume sales of air
conditioners (AC). Sales are being driven largely by growing disposable income levels in the country and a
natural preference for pleasant temperatures. The market has been growing by nearly 20 percent,
annually, over the last few years; 3.3 million ACs were sold in FY2014. At present, only 2 percent of Indian
households have ACs.
VSTPS - largest power generating station
NTPC's Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station (VSTPS) has become India’s largest operating power
plant with the additional commissioning of a 500 MW unit. This has taken the overall commercial capacity
of VSTPS to 4,760 MW, of NTPC to 38,442 MW and the NTPC Group to 44,443 MW. VSTPS is located in
the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh. Several states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh, Goa, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli will be benefitted by this project.
Upgraded auto fuel to cut carbon pollution by 2020
India plans to introduce Euro-VI emission compliant petrol and diesel by 2020 to reduce carbon pollution.
The country also plans to shift to Bharat Stage (BS) VI from BS-IV fuels by April 1, 2020. BS-VI grade fuel
will have 10 parts per million (ppm) sulphur. The move will not only expand efficiency, but also reduce
venting and flaring in the upstream segment. To upgrade petrol and diesel quality, oil refineries will need
to invest another INR 80,000 crore. Earlier the refineries had invested over INR 55,000 crore for the
supply of BS-III/IV fuels. The government is likely to supply Euro-IV or BS-IV fuel throughout the country
by April 2017. Kerala, Goa, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana, the Union Territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli,
Daman and Diu and Andaman & Nicobar Islands will receive BS-IV fuel from April 1, 2016, while the rest
of the country will get the BS-IV supply from April 1, 2017.
