Why do you think teachers like Mr. P treated Indians the way they did? Would Junior have thought to leave the rez if not for the conversation with Mr. P? Or had the courage?

7. Author Reading Sherman Alexie Reading Junior, and Alexie, use a lot of metaphors and simlies in this book. This clip ends before the metaphor is explained. In the book, what does Gordy say he means by “boner”? (p. 98) This is a good example of language that might make some of us uncomfortable, but is an authentic (believable) use of speech for a 14 year old boy.

How and why do you act differently in these two situations? Does it have anything to do with race, culture, gender or religion?
