                 jumpstarting

Amber Lakin has found her
calling. The emory Woodruff
scholar volunteers as a team
leader for Jumpstart, a pro-
gram that brings college stu-
dents together with preschool-
ers for tutoring and mentoring
to improve language skills.
lakin, a political science major
from california, plans lessons,
leads activities, and organizes a
team of fellow emory students
who spend two mornings a
week jumpstarting these young
minds. one day, she hopes to
take her calling to the larger
stage to help develop national
school policy.
knowledge
uncovering

             What happens when the brain
             doesn’t work right? That’s
             what interests Tyler Glea-
             son, a neuroscience major
who spent a semester in a
             genetics lab, examining the
             dBH gene and psychosis.
             Tyler loves research because
it’s not just science for the
             sake of science. research
             gives him the potential to
             uncover new knowledge that
             just might change lives.
talent
tapping

            Charlotte Watts first traveled
            to visit her italian granddad
when she was six weeks old.
But it wasn’t until her sopho-
more year at emory that she
got the chance to work with
            the renaissance paintings that
            she adores up close. Through
            a study abroad program in
            florence, charlotte is learning
            the fresco techniques of the
            old masters in preparation
for a career in art conserva-
tion. While there, she’s gotten a
            chance to photograph fashion
            runway shows in palazzo pitti
            and paint the same landscapes
            as da vinci.

            Bean, emory’s fair trade cof-
            fee cart, a non-profit business
            that promotes sustainability
            and raises money for student
            projects. anthropology major
            Emily Cumbie-Drake runs
the green Bean, and she’ll take
            her passion for sustainability
            to emory’s sister school, st.
            andrews university, this fall as
a Bobby Jones scholar. in addi-
            tion to sustainability courses,
the phi Beta Kappa member is
            pursuing studies in scottish
            history and culture. There’s
also a jig or two in her future
            with the st. andrews dance
            society.
