Negative political advertising has reached unprecedented levels in the 2008 US presidential election, with over half of campaign budgets spent on ads attacking opponents. Candidates and outside groups frequently twist the truth, lie, or use out-of-context quotes to embarrass competitors. Both Barack Obama and John McCain engaged heavily in negative attacks against each other through advertising.
