DESIGNING
   THE
 FUTURE
INTRODUCTION
Designing The Future is refer to a preparation or an effort that
we make to design the future.
Peter Joseph said that “although many of us feel we can prepare
for our future by thinking, acting and learning using present
methods and values, nothing is farther from the truth –
especially in today’s rapidly changing world. Each succeeding
generations inherit the values, accomplishments, hopes,
successes and failings of previous generations. And they inherits
the results of the decisions made by those generations”.
So, we as a today’s generation must play a role in the shaping of
tomorrow’s world. We should design something that can direct
the future; not just one’s own, but that of society in general; and
not just for one’s generation, but for those to follow. Not only is
science making it possible, but it is now vital.
SCIENCE AND ARTS
     INNOVATION SPACE
This is the current
 project by USM UNIQUE
                   HUMANE

                 CHANGEABLE
    What is the
similarities of this UNIVERSAL
  project between
   Peter Joseph
approach and USM SUSTAINABLE
 apex 7 points…?
                              UNCERTAIN FUTURE
                                COMMITMENT
1) UNCERTAIN
         FUTURE
 USM will spend RM450
    million on science and
    arts park in Bukit
    Jambul, which is
    expected to be ready in
    2014.
2) UNIQUE
the space planning is a lot like property development
work for a few lucky companies.
 it is like a sustainable development

 some of the space planning:
    - a boutique hotel “catering to the digital traveler”
    - “leisure and wellness facilities”
    - retail spaces
    - a day-care centre
3) SUSTAINABLE
 Sustainable is at the heart of this concept. The
architecture embodies a contemporary design influenced
by traditional indigenous architecture for the tropical
climate which is respectful of nature and the ecosystem as
well as local cultural values.
 Each habitable room will face a picturesque view of
greenery and water elements, bringing nature indoors so
as to ignite the creative energy.
 the buildings will be highly energy efficient, with
tropical microclimate features such ah large overhangs
and well-ventilated spaces. The facilities will be built
along contour lines, creating green environments and a
reduction in energy needs.
4) HUMANE
 strengthen innovation and retain the best talents
 hopes to retain the best talents within the university
system, nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs and
showcase its research achievements and academics
talents.
 it will create high value jobs as well as boost the
surrounding economy.
5) UNIVERSAL
 Attracting international collaborators to Malaysia’s
    burgeoning knowledge industry.
 the spaces is created to enable entrepreneurs,
investors, scientists and artists to blend their
respective fields in a sustainable environments.
6) CHANGEABLE

             Retail spaces
                                       Boutique hotel
7) COMMITMENT
 USM has attracted RM20 million in capital
investments from local companies which will operate
    at its new research park.
 USM has also secured RM23 million worth of research
    commercialization grants from the Malaysian
Development Technology Corp, will be used in part for
start-up operations and pilot plants at the new park
 USM will seek public funding for some of the projects
at the park, which will be carried out in three phases,
other projects will be done via joint ventures.
