1. While talk of increasing McWhinney’s current sustainability practices began in 2004, in 2006, the company commissioned a benchmarking study to research best practices. From this, a desire grew to make sustainability a part of the company culture, and in 2007, McWhinney began working with the Brendle Group and CSU’s Institute for the Built Environment to facilitate a company-wide action plan with a triple bottom line of People, Planet and Profit.
2. McWhinney has a company-wide office recycling program that works with Waste-Not to recycle paper products, bottles, cans, ink cartridges, batteries and more.

McWhinney People Services has a number of practices and programs that focus on the health and vitality of McWhinney associates as well as the company’s sustainability. Some of those include:
4. McWhinney also provides up to two hours a month of compensation to associates for time spent during business hours volunteering at nonprofit organizations throughout Northern Colorado. In addition, the McWhinney Foundation allocates yearly grants to these same nonprofit organizations.

6. In August 2007 McWhinney planted a tree - Austrian Pine Trees, Crabapples, Hawthorns and Cottonwoods - for each of its 80 associates at the north end of the Chapungu Sculpture Park, a 26-acre art and nature preserve.
7. McWhinney also provides financial and institutional support for intra-company groups such as the Green Team and the WOW Team, which conducted a 2007 Lifestyle Challenge to improve the activity level and health of associates.

10. McWhinney Marketing implemented its first zero waste event at the 2006 Business After Hours and since then only hosts zero waste events using compostable utensils, plates, cups and napkins and reusable serving utensils and décor.
11. The Marketing Team also sends out all press releases, media invites and newsletters via email and distributes media packets on flash drives.
12. McWhinney associates formed a Green Team earlier this year to encourage and expand the company’s green practices. In the last year, the Green Team has met with every business team within McWhinney to strengthen the understanding of the company’s internal recycling program and held quarterly events to promote sustainability on a larger scale.

24. ` McWhinney designed Centerra and Van de Water as pedestrian- oriented communities with walking trails, open space and buffer areas, roundabouts, which do not require traffic lights, and mass transit stops.
25. Both Centerra and Van de Water communities are landscaped with native and drought-tolerant plants that require less water and less mowing.

27. The Centerra Design Guidelines are adding a large section to address the development of detention ponds to ensure they create valuable habitat in addition to their functional drainage role. The HPEC’s role will also include the contractor to build and landscape the detention ponds in Centerra in the future.

34. McWhinney Commercial and Mixed Use Team have implemented a construction waste recycling program in partnership with Drahota and Waste-Not. This program is now mandatory for every building in Centerra and is enforced through the Design Review Committee.

38. McWhinney Accounting & Finance recently transferred payroll and timesheets to an online system, significantly reducing paper usage for this monthly process.

Much of the compost for the newly completed Chapungu Sculpture Park came from construction waste recycled from other Projects within Centerra such as the Medical Center of the Rockies, which is one of only two LEED certified hospitals in the U.S. The four truck loads were delivered by Waste-Not Recycling in June 2007 and mark the start of reusing resources within Centerra.
40. After more than a year of planning, discussing and meeting with consultants and experts in the field of sustainability, McWhinney in 2007 formally adopted a company-wide Action Plan for Sustainability that sets forth current and future goals for each business team and the company as a whole.

44. McWhinney is working to irrigate all public landscaping in The Lakes at Centerra community with non-potable water from Houts Reservoir, significantly reducing the amount of fresh water needed for landscaping.
45. McWhinney is also partnering with the Thompson R2J School District and the HPEC to develop a Green building design, curriculum and culture for a future elementary school located in The Lakes at Centerra.

53. McWhinney is a member of the Colorado chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council has committed to support the newly formed Northern Colorado chapter. The group is a collaboration of developers, builders, architects, real estate agents, engineers, contractors, designers, and educators that are leading the way in sustainable building practices.

HPEC has been hired by Centerra and other land owners including MCR and the High Plains Village HOA to maintain and environmentally manage the natural opens spaces and common areas on their properties. This ensures these open spaces are managed to enhance wildlife habitat and sustain corridor connections to the larger environmentally sensitive areas.
