Severe acute malnutrition (SAM)
affects millions of children under 5
years of age and contributes to more
than 1 million child deaths in the
world each year.
When malnutrition is diagnosed early
and treatment is readily available,
these child deaths can be prevented.
Device X addresses the challenges of
collecting critical medical data while
assisting in early detection of SAM.

17. Due to the high demand, overwhelmed CHWs and understaffed clinics struggle
to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment to every patient.

18. Device X guides CHWs through a detailed questionnaire that, in this specific case,
addresses child’s level of malnutrition, signs of edema, and any other health
complication present, in order to compute an accurate diagnosis.

38. In the current system, high volume paper data has to physically travel to its
destinations resulting in long delays that cause serious consequences.

39. Device X stores the users’ input data locally and formats it in a way that can be
easily uploaded and interpreted once a network reception is detected.

40. It uploads all the stored data, via SMS, onto a centralized database that allows for
real time monitoring and allows to analyze the ‘bigger picture’ to make more
informed decisions.

41. Mothers today have to travel hours or days to reach health clinics, they often have
to miss days of work and leave part of their families behind.

88. It’s important to introduce solutions that build on existing infrastructures and
processes and that do not disrupt the users’ current work flow.

89. Device X allows to register new patients or follow up on existing patients, to
assess the status of children’s health while making recommendations on what
inpatient, outpatient care or other treatment is necessary.

90. It aims to replicate the current flow, while making it more intuitive by allowing the
user to answer the questions with the simple press of a button.

91. Device X can schedule follow up visits and, if the family owns a mobile phone, it
can send reminders to make sure no child is left behind.

94. It can be customized for many different environments: it can be employed as an
educational tool, as well as for data-logging applications in schools.

extremely versatile and can be adapted to many different uses.
