CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS - OVERVIEW
Contactless payment systems are credit cards and debit cards, key fobs, smart cards, or other
devices, including smartphones and other mobile devices, that use radio-frequency identification
(RFID) or near field communication (NFC, e.g. Samsung Pay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, Fitbit Pay, or
any bank mobile application that support Contactless) for making secure payments. The embedded
chip and antenna enable consumers to wave their card, fob, or handheld device over a reader at the
point of sale terminal. Contactless payments are made in close physical proximity, unlike mobile
payments which use broad-area cellular or Wi-Fi networks and do not involve close physical
proximity.
EMV is a common standard used by major credit card and smartphone companies for use in general
commerce. Contactless smart cards that function as stored-value cards are becoming popular for
use as transit system farecards, such as the Oyster card or RioCard. These can often store non-
currency value (such as monthly passes) in additional to fare value purchased with cash or electronic
payment.
EMV is a global standard for secure debit or credit payments made using chip cards at a merchant
who has an EMV chip-acceptance infrastructure. EMV-compliant chip card payments protect
against the use of counterfeit, lost, or stolen cards and skimming. Issuers, merchants, consumers,
and acquirers/processors can all benefit from EMV. As a result of the EMV fraud liability shift in
October 2015, merchants, issuers, and processors in the United States are in the final stages of
upgrading their infrastructures.
Contactless payment systems are widely used in Asia, Europe, and North America as there are a
number of advantages to users or retailers

PATENT SEARCH STRATEGY
Using PatSeer, we searched individual publications and then collapsed them to one member per
Invention (Simple Families). Patent families are a group of one or more patent applications in
multiple countries which represent the same invention.
The publications included in the report are updated as of 29th
January 2018.
Summary of Search Results:
We started with a set of 5384 search results
We then deduplicated them to unique inventions (Families) and got 2695 Families
We browsed through the resulting set of record to remove any record that was
irrelevant to the search topic
We then filtered, analyzed and came across some unwanted terms/Keywords. These
records were then removed from the resulting set.
We flagged/rated each individual record using Search Recall™ option present in PatSeer
NOTE: All analysis in this report has been done on Simple Family (one member per family) and
so the data in the charts should be construed accordingly.

INVENTION ACTIVITY
The chart below shows number of application filed and grants given for contactless payments in
the last decade. The chart was generated on overall records (5384 Records).
The filing trend indicates a gradual increase in number of applications being filed after 2010.
Maximum number of patent applications (471) taking/having priority were filed during 2015.
How we did it?
Application and patents with their respective counts were converted to a column chart.

FILING TREND FOR TOP COMPANIES
The chart below shows assignee innovation time line for the top 10 Assignees active in
contactless payments
Ebay appear to be one of the earliest assignees with filings for contactless payments and
one that innovators pursued the longest right till present date. Though there are long
gaps in the timeline from the early days, the recent years have continued to see a lot of
IP activity. Similarly, First Data Corp & Target have visibly shorter timeline with no new
patents since 2015
How we did it?
Once the patents were added to PatSeer Projects, top assignees and innovation time line was generated
within the Quick Stats Tab and converted to a bubble chart.

TREND FOR VARIOUS APPLICATION OVER THE LAST
20 YEARS
The chart below represents the growth of different applications of contactless payments
for the last 20 years
Use of contactless payments by the retailers has seen tremendous rise since 2010
surpassing all other applications
How we did it?
First records were classified under different application areas. Then these were added as layer on the
application year chart. The resulting chart was exported as an image. Note that for analysis the records till
2017 were excluded as there is a time gap of 18 months from a records to be published.

APPLICATIONS
The table below shows research activity of companies across different applications of
contactless payments
MasterCard leads the records count for almost all the applications
Alphabet has contactless payment application for only retailers and restaurants
How we did it?
First records were classified under different application of contactless payments, and then a co-
occurrence matrix for parent assignees and applications was generated using the co-occurrence tool. The
resulted matrix was then converted to a Heat Map and exported as an image.

Inspite of being the top assignee for contactless payments MasterCard has lesser focus
on the protocols used for contactless payments
How we did it?
First records were classified under different protocols used for contactless payments; a matrix was then
generated for the top assignees and different protocols using the co-occurrence tool. The resulted matrix
was then converted to a Column Heat map.

WHERE ARE RESEARCH TEAMS OF TOP COMPANIES
BASED THEIR TECHNOLOGY FOCUS
The chart below shows leading companies across priority countries and different
technologies
MasterCard and Visa have new filings originating from almost all the top priority
countries
How we did it?
First records were classified under different technology areas and then under the Quick Stats option
layers for top 5 priority countries were added on the parent assignees chart. Stacking option was used to
stack the two parameters. The resulting image was then exported as image

INVENTOR GROUPS OF TOP COMPANIES FOR
CONTACTLESS PAYMENT
The generated maps below highlight the key inventor groups of top five companies. In map
below the groups are created using network relationships between the Assignees and the
inventors listed on the graph
Key inventors present in the map, for instance, Maw Brian is highlighted as red as he has filings
for both MasterCard and Visa. Hence it is in between the two respective clusters. Similar is the
case with Jonathan Wall who has filings for Alphabet and Bizmodeline
How we did it?
Using the VizMAP tool, patents of top five companies were loaded on the map. These were then
expanded by their respective inventor names. The VizShade option was used to shade the inventors and
assignees with potential overlapping patents between them.

TECHNOLOGY LANDSCAPE FOR CONTACTLESS
PAYMENTS
The landscape map below represents key concepts for different companies generated across
title, abstract and claims. Themes are collection of prominent topics extracted from the patent
data and grouped under relevant parent tags.
Clusters for payment amount or QR code and transaction terminal device are together as both
the clusters are relating to a transaction provider terminal and there is high degree of relevance
with respect to the text.
How we did it?
The VizMAP tool in PatSeer Pro was used for this analysis. First the clusters were generated on title,
abstract and claims using the Advanced Clustering option. Once the clusters were generated these were
loaded using the Landscape mode and then the themes were colored by record type.

SUMMARY
This report analyzes research trends of contactless payments with a focus on Technologies,
payment modes, protocols, transaction models, applications and also highlights the key
companies involved in this space.
Upcoming trend in the retail payment circuit is the contactless payments. These are used widely
in Asia and America and Europe. As we have seen in this report multiple technologies might be
used to implement contactless payment systems. The choice of an appropriate technology is
driven by issue such as what type of payment mechanism the technology supports.
Then the payments also depend on the transaction models used for payments. These models
are then based on the backend infrastructure used.
Increasing number of payment application is moving towards contactless payment technology.
Applications range from toll collection, retail purchases and so on. The benefits of contactless
payment for consumers and retailers have been proven in various implementations. Increased
convenience for the consumer has resulted in widespread acceptance of the technology.
Inspite of the wide applications there is no single technology used for contactless payments.
Several technologies are being used by different retailers. For example some are using RFID and
others are using smart cards.
