6. Questions and Answers
with Nate King
Q. What charges can a person face if drugs were found at the scene?
A. People can face a number of different charges depending on the type and amount of drugs
in their home. These can range from misdemeanor for drugs like alcohol or small amounts of
marijuana to felonies for large amounts of marijuana, prescription drugs, and other man made
drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin. Some of these felonies could carry a
punishment of up to life in prison.
Q.Which type of drug can you be faced with the worst charges?
A. Oklahoma considers drugs controlled dangerous substances. They are listed in schedules
with 1 being the worst and 4 being the least dangerous. Selling these drugs carries the stiffest
penalties. All prescription medications are considered controlled dangerous substances even
though they are produced to help us. As long as they are taken as prescribed by a doctor you
are not breaking the law.
Q. Can you tell by looking at a suspect that they are on something?
A. Many drug addicts show many of the same physical characteristics. Some of these are
poor hygene, involuntary muscle spasms, and rotting teeth. Law enforcement officers cannot
rely on appearance alone to determine whether or not someone uses drugs. They must gather
other evidence to prove someone is indeed under the influence of drugs.
7. Q. Can you tell by looking at a suspect that they are on something?
A. Many drug addicts show many of the same physical characteristics. Some of these
are poor hygene, involuntary muscle spasms, and rotting teeth. Law enforcemet officers
cannot rely on appearance alone to determine whether or not someone uses drugs.
They must gather other evidence to prove someone is indeed under the influence of
drugs.
Q. If so, what are the signs that you see on a person that tells him that that person on
under influence?
A. There are some officers that attend specialized training to become drug recognition
experts. Manu prescription and street drugs affect a persons pupils either by constricting
or dialating them. It is very difficult for an officer without specialized training to determine
the specific drug without other evidence.
Q. Can a person be charged with drugs when they are under the influence and there
are no drugs to take into evidence?
A. It is possible to charge a person for possession of a drug by being under the
influence. This is called constructive possession and requires the officer to articulate or
explain enough evidence to prove possession. Normally instead of charging for
possesion the person is charged with being under the influence of drugs.
8. Q. What do cops do with the drugs after they confiscate them for
evidence?
A. Confiscated drugs are locked in evidence for safe keeping. They
are sent to the crime lab of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation
for analysis to determine the drug and amount. After the case is closed
the drugs are destroyed at the crime lab.
Q. What is the most effective way of detecting drug possession?
A. The most effective way to determine drug possession is to find
drugs on a person.
Q. What are the ways you determine if someone is on drugs?
A. Law enforcement uses drug recognition experts to determine if
someone is under the influence of drugs. We can also use our training,
knowledge and experience.
9. Q. In what situations would you bring a canine n to a situation?
A. K-9's are used when drugs ate suspected in a vehicle or building.
They ate not used to search a person.
Q. Can you tell me a story about a big drug bust you have
encountered in your career and what were the circumstances regarding
the bust?
A. My biggest drug bust started by buying methamphetamine under
cover from a man and woman. After buying the drugs I typed a search
warrant and went back to the home. We searched the home and found
nearly a pound of methamphetamine. We also seized the vehicle
owned by the two people. One person went to federal prison over the
charges and the other is now on probation.

10. Drugs
• There are many different types of drugs.
• All drugs are bad for you but some of
them can be very addictive.
• Smoking is the most common drug and it
is very addictive some people think that
smoking can help with stress.
• One cigarette has more than 5 million
different chemicals in it.
11. • People also chew tobacco which is just as
bad as smoking.
• Even if you don’t smoke second hand
smoke is just as bad and that is one of the
leading causes of deaths in the United
States.
• Smoking can cause lung cancer, mouth
cancer, etc.
• Some drugs are prescription drugs and
they aren’t bad for you unless you
overdose on those and then they can be
addictive to so they can be just as bad as
any-other street drug.
12. So we hoped you enjoyed this
and we also hope you learned a
