WelcomeThanks for coming todayIntroductionGraeme Smith, Adult Literacy Education & Consulting LtdOtherwise known as ALEC LtdBased in TaupoContext: NCALE (Voc) and Intensive LNAmong other pieces of paper... MA in Language TeachingMessing around with applied language studies, ESOL, adult literacy and numeracy since about 1998Around the room...?This workshop: Doing More with LessMy personal motto: Doing less with more...
Here’s the question...Is this a question anyone has actually asked themselves? Or something similar? Why did you actually come to the workshop...? What are you expectations...?I think the answer is actually yes and noYes... because we have toNo... because it’s scary as hellWhat’s the picture by the way?Who in the room has an iPod?Who has a mobile phone in their pocket right now?Anyone have an iPhone?
Five things to coverPush and Pull factors... Borrowed from Geography and population studiesI’m not an expert on that by that...But it’s relevant because I think that we are heading into uncharted territory... The new tertiary landscape... A brave new world...I have a very brief self evaluation checklist for you to have a go atWeb 2.0... Anyone heard of that?Case Study: A very short look at how I’m trying to deal with these factors in my own businessAny questions?
These are the push factorsWho in this room has been – or will be – affected by these...?Who is facing budget cuts right now or in 2010?Any comments?
These are the pull factors... Literally pulling us towards technological solutionsVirtual space is so cheap now it’s basically freeSome applications are free – we’ll get into those soonWho has started to investigate these kinds of options? What specifically?
So... To sum up then... Here’s my modelPush factorsPull factorsCausing us to migrate towards technological solutions in the new tertiary landscape
Are you ready to integrate technology into your training?Do self evaluation – Hand out toolDiscuss and get feedbackNeeds to be quick...
Do Web 2.0 cards in groups... Simply sort into two piles: known and unknownBrainstorm unknown to whiteboard and discussAnyone with experience of any of these yet?
This is not a particularly research-based case study... It’s simply a brief look at what I’m doing with several of these technologiesMy context for thisWe don’t have a campus... We use other people’s training rooms and facilitiesALEC is decentralised. I have an office but so do each of our contractors... At home...Two contractors in Auckland and two in Taupo, but most of us could be anywhereAnd personally, I’d rather be anywhere... On the gold coast perhaps...Generally, I don’t like meetings so I don’t tend to have very many... Instead we use email, my mobile phone, and skypeLower overheads = hopefully able to absorb funding cuts in 2010
Want to set up an electronic workspace for 2010... Not like the TECs... Investment plans!Tried GoogleDocs but eventually gave up... Also tried other online office applications... Still limited functionality in the text editing and table creation for example.MS Office Live looks like it could work as it meshes well with the normal office applicationsWikispaces looks like it could also work... Look at the success of Wikipedia...
Been to see a web development company...Investigating online learning possibilities... Moodle...Youtube... iTunes... Podcasts... Mobile technology including SMS... Might create an incentive for 2010 for our NCALE (Voc) students
So what are you going to do next?Jut pick one thing and try to integrate it at home... In your personal life...Then wait for the right time to apply it at work
Thank you... Closing thoughts:“Technology in and of itself cannot make school practice innovative, and will not produce educational change, but technology, in the hands of pedagogically skilled educators it can enable innovative practice and facilitate educational change.”Derek’s bloghttp://blog.core-ed.net/derek/
