6. WHEN? Martin started working on the bus boycott in December of 1955 . They worked for over a year until the unjust laws were changed. In August of 1963 , people marched for civil rights in Washington, DC. Martin gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Martin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December 1964 . He donated the $54,000 prize money to civil rights groups. He was assassinated in Tennessee in April 1968 .
7. WHY? Martin grew up in the segregated South where signs were posted in order to treat white and black people differently. They couldn’t use the same drinking fountains, schools, or public restrooms. Martin and his best friend had to go to different schools. He didn’t understand or think it was fair. He decided he would try to change things when he grew up. To make the world a better place, he became a preacher and a leader in the civil rights movement.
