An Introduction
Why Cleveland-Based Learning?
CBL …
promotes the exploration of downtown Cleveland through
the view of
history,
social issues,
majors,
and
group participation.
How does it work?
1. Familiarize yourself with a Cleveland landmark using the Cleveland Historical App and
the ASC 101 Research Guide.
2. Explore the site with your group. Talk to locals, answer questions, and reflect on your
experience.
3. Develop research skills by brainstorming keywords and evaluating a relevant article.
4. Using research skills, find relevant articles to support the research question associated
with your group’s landmark.
5. At the end of the semester , present with your group on your experience exploring your
site as well as the relevant research articles you discovered. You’ll also submit a
reflection.

Cleveland Based Learning Project 2016

  • 2. Why Cleveland-Based Learning? CBL … promotes the exploration of downtown Cleveland through the view of history, social issues, majors, and group participation.
  • 3. How does it work? 1. Familiarize yourself with a Cleveland landmark using the Cleveland Historical App and the ASC 101 Research Guide. 2. Explore the site with your group. Talk to locals, answer questions, and reflect on your experience. 3. Develop research skills by brainstorming keywords and evaluating a relevant article. 4. Using research skills, find relevant articles to support the research question associated with your group’s landmark. 5. At the end of the semester , present with your group on your experience exploring your site as well as the relevant research articles you discovered. You’ll also submit a reflection.

Site Exploration  What was your initial reaction to the site?  Describe the space.  What are people doing there?  Would you return there?  What would you say to a friend going to visit the site?  How is the site related to your research question?Take a selfie while you are there! Post to ASC 101 Twitter page.
  • 9. Group Presentation 1. Tell us about your site. 2. Introduce your research question. 3. Tell us about the sources/perspectives you found. 4. Relate the issue to Cleveland and your site. 5. Conclude with your group’s opinions about the issues, or potential solutions. 30 points
  • 10. Group Presentation - Bibliography Each group will be required to submit a bibliography of 6-8 sources, correctly formatted in MLA style.
  • 11. Individual Reflection Before reflecting … Make observations while at your site. Ask questions and take notes! During the library sessions, find at least 2-3 articles you can use to inform your approach to the topic. Work with your group! Come to me with questions!
