Application

1) Physical description What does the cemetery look like?
Describe landscape, topography, markers, and any buildings
or structures on the property.
2) Brief history Who is buried there? Identify any ethnic or
specific groups of people historically associated with the
cemetery. Why is the cemetery important?
3) Map showing cemetery location
4) Recent color photographs showing overall setting and close-
up views of representative markers and any unusual grave
markers
5) Site plan of the cemetery with photos keyed to plan
6) Historic photographs

Criteria D: Information Potential
 Criteria D is commonly associated with archaeological
significance – though sites may be eligible for listing
even if archaeological fieldwork has not been
completed!
 IMPORTANT: A cemetery that is eligible and nominated
under Criteria D does not need to meet Criteria
Consideration D
 Information potential is measured in data. Start with a
list of things you do not know about the cemetery. Can
we acquire this data?

Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery
1882 African American cemetery in Clarke
County.
Archaeological investigations revealed a
variety of different grave goods , density of
graves, boundary of the site, sizes of
headstones, frequency of headstones –

Criteria Considerations
CRITERIA CONSIDERATION D: CEMETERIES
A cemetery is eligible if it derives its primary significance
from graves of persons of transcendent importance, from
age, from distinctive design features, or from association
with historic events
CRITERIA CONSIDERATION C: BIRTHPLACES OR
GRAVES
A birthplace or grave of a historical figure is eligible if the
person is of outstanding importance and if there is no
other appropriate site or building directly associated with
his or her productive life.
