A Program for School Educators in the Piedmont Triad
The goal of Ecolab’s grant program for school educators is to encourage and reward individual teacher’s
creativity and innovation in classroom learning by providing opportunities that will
1) Motivate and challenge students intellectually
2) Raise student achievement
3) Increase student understanding of academic content, including technical/vocational studies
4) Increase student understanding of the connection between school and life
The program provides materials and resources through grants up to $3,000 to teachers in communities
surrounding Ecolab facilities. Please note: if the educator changes schools, the grant or materials stay within
the facility where the grant was originally given.
Guidelines:
• Funds are available for the purchase of materials for the purpose of increasing student understanding of
academic content
• The proposal must be student interactive and improve thinking skills
• The proposal must include a detailed list (e.g., not simply “school supplies” or “various items”) of requested
materials
• Materials requested must be part of a curriculum plan (e.g., software will help meet specific learning goals)
Criteria:
Proposals will be reviewed and ranked by an Ecolab employee committee according to the following criteria,
with top-ranked proposals receiving funding:
• Learning/improved thinking skills that will result from the project
• Relationship of requested resources to the curriculum and students
• Plan for evaluating results
• Number of students to be served
• Preference will be for projects that are sustainable
• Teacher-evaluated quality of expected individual student experience
• Priority will be given to projects that serve the most at-risk students
What will not be funded:
• Computers and computer hardware
• Staff or substitute time
• Staff development
• Ecolab product donations
• Projects that do not directly impact students
• Field trips
Application information:
Each question on the application form must be answered. Supplemental materials are not necessary, and no
more than two additional pages will be accepted. Please note, only one application will be accepted per
educator.
Deadline: Proposals must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2009 whether hand-delivered, mailed
through the postal service, or emailed. Important: If you choose to email your application, please copy your
principal on the email. This will serve as the approval required on the cover sheet. All applicants will receive
notice by the end of the current school year and funds will be available in time for the start of the 2009-2010
school year.

Summary of Project (2-3 sentences):
In Flip for Math students will read engaging texts about a mathematical concept. In
order to show their mastery, they will then teach a lesson regarding that concept. The
lessons will be recorded to use as tutorials for other students who are challenged by
that topic.
Summary of Requested Materials (detailed list on subsequent page):
Flip for Math requires engaging texts about math concepts and recording devices to film
lessons.
One paragraph summary of purpose and expected results of proposal:
Flip for Math will provide story-books that involve real-world math challenges. These
books will help students realize that math is everywhere and recognize the practical
nature of applied math. Each book will help students conceptualize complex math,
reinforce presentation skills, and support reading comprehension.

1. Briefly explain the main problem or need that this proposal addresses and what
results are expected.
This proposal addresses lack of depth and retention of mathematical understanding
among eight- and nine-year-olds. I expect that student motivation and skills will improve
as a result of Flip for Math. If students are able to teach a mathematical concept, then
they must surely understand it. Having an audience to whom students can present their
knowledge will encourage them to become experts of their material.
2. Briefly, explain how this proposal will improve student learning or thinking skills. How
will resources requested contribute to that learning?
Each book in Flip for Math shares a practical application for math, so students will
recognize the importance of math in daily life. Creative activities associated with the
texts can be performed to reinforce the skills taught. After reading the book and
performing the task, students will have to consider how to best present the material.
3. Describe how the materials requested relate to the curriculum/classroom in which
they will be used.
The materials requested correlate with state and national standards in mathematics for
third grade. The topics range from multiplication to elapsed time, and span the entire
school year. These materials are especially helpful for students who are not
logical/mathematical in their learning style because they can learn about math concepts
using visual language and practical examples.
4. Briefly explain how the results will be evaluated.
I will assess each student’s math skills and interests to match books with readers. I will
evaluate student video clips. Students will self-assess their progress. Parents can
comment on each lesson, and audience members can also rate how helpful the
presentation is to their understanding of the material.
5. Approximately how many students will be affected by these resources and in what
way(s)?
Approximately twenty-five students in my class will be immediately affected by these
resources. However, the extended affect of this project may be huge. Since lessons
will be available online, other students who are having difficulty with a math concept can
access them for free. In this way, my students can pay-it-forward by mastering new
material and help others learn it, too. Since these are non-consumable materials,
students in subsequent classes will also be able to use these resources.

6. How does this project compliment other subjects or courses?
This project will complement reading instruction, as students will apply reading
strategies to comprehend the texts. It will improve technology and presentation skills,
which are vital as students prepare for the twenty-first century job market. Science and
social-studies content will also be impacted, as a number of the books focus on those
areas.

8. Have you received an Ecolab award before? Yes No Briefly evaluate
results of that award, including anything learned (from either success or failure) that
might help improve future results:
No
9. Are there other funding sources available for this project? Explain:
There are not other funding sources for this grant at this time. However, I am
passionate about this idea and will pursue other grants if this is unavailable.
