Going green

 1. 1. Going Green in Michigan!
 2. 2. Who is responsible for Global Warming?

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control) indicated in a 2007 report that humans have caused all or most of the current planetary warming.

Planetary warming comes from additional production of Carbon Dioxide .

This is a report that is derived by 2,500 scientists in more than 130 countries.

 3. 3.

What’s wrong with Carbon dioxide Emissions?

 8. 12. 2010 Toyota Prius
 9. 13. Specs on this vehicle.

0-60 mph timing of 9.8 seconds.

134hp

50 mpg

 11. 15. The “Glowing” Solar Tower
 12. 18. The MagLev turbine is a big step forward in the world of wind power. By using magnetism to levitate the blades friction is eliminated and more power can be produced without any additional power expense (since the magnetics require no energy to run). The MagLev has a low threshold velocity for producing energy, could theoretically survive for centuries and can power up to 750,000 homes. Though the initial investment involved hundreds of millions of dollars the payoff is potentially huge. .
 13. 19. Wind Turbines on skyscrapers
 14. 20. Baharain World Trade Center
 15. 21. Wind Power Kites!
 16. 22.

In Germany, the largest wind-power producer, the government has been giving grants to builders of wind farms since the late 1980s, and requires utilities to buy electricity generated from renewable sources at premium rates. The extra cost is passed on to consumers.

 17. 24. Wyandotte will have 5 wind turbines built by 2010.

1 at BASF corporation, 2 on their golf course, and 2 on pieces of their city property.

$15 million to build them. So far, the research money has come from the federal government; not the city.

Provide power to 500 houses.

Positive Externalties?

Negative Externalties?

 18. 25. Hydro-Electric Power

Renewable, must be sustainable with a water current.

Dams are constructed to regulate the sustainability part of water current.

 19. 26. The Edison Sault Electric Hydroelectric Plant

25 to 30 MW

 20. 28. Geothermal Systems

Ground temperature at this level is 55 degrees.

Geothermal systems use the Earth's natural energy storage capability to heat & cool buildings and provide domestic hot water.

 21. 30.

Geothermal energy -- tapping heat deep in the Earth to generate power -- may have more potential, at less impact to society, than any of the other alternative resources

 22. 31. Geothermal Benefits

LOWER OPERATING COSTS:

A Geothermal sysgtem can cut utility bills by 30%-50%

compared to conventional HVAC systems.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:

Geothermal Heat is naturally renewable and non-polluting.

LOWER MAINTENANCE:

All equipment is protected indoors or underground.

 23. 32.

LONGER LIFE SPAN:

A Geothermal system can have a life expectancy of up to 30 years; ground loops are often warranted for up to 50 years.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY:

A Geothermal heat pump can move more than 3 units of heat energy for every 1 unit of electrical energy used to power the system.

NON-ALLERGENIC:

Since Geothermal doesn't require outside air for combustion, pollens & spores aren't drawn into your house...just clean, filtered air.

SAFE:

No dangers of gas leaks or carbon monoxide poison.

 24. 33. Algae: Biofuel Of The Future?

As part of the photosynthesis process algae produce oil and can generate 100,000 gallons of oil per acre per year. Corn produces 20-30 gallons per acre per year.

Algae could produce biofuel while cleaning up other problems.

it's a non-food crop, removes large amounts of carbon dioxide from the air, and grows fast.

 25. 34. Solar Panel Costs

$77,500 to install a 10 kilowatt-capacity system on a house.

It would take 50 years to pay for itself.

With government subsidies, 10 years.

 26. 35. Biomass

Biomass refers to the conversion of plant matter into a transportation fuel (biofuel) or electricity (biopower ), usually by incinerating waste material or creating combustible gas through chemical processes. A significant amount of electricity also is made by gathering and burning landfill gas.

 27. 36. Biomass power

The world’s largest biomass power plant running exclusively on chicken manure has opened in the Netherlands. The power plant will deliver renewable electricity to 90,000 households. It has a capacity of 36.5 megawatts, and will generate more than 270 million kWh of electricity per year.

 28. 37. Costs of Alternative Fuels

Solar- 30cents per kilowatt/hour

Wind- 15cents per kilowatt/hour

Biomass- 10 cents per kilowatt/hour

Geothermal- 5-10 cents per kilowatt/hour

Nuclear- 5-6 cents per kilowatt/hour

Coal- 3-5 cents per kilowatt/hour

Hydro- less than 2 cents kilowatt/hour

 29. 38. What public policy has been passed to promote green colar jobs?

Mandate that 10% of all power produced by coal factories must come from clean, sustainable energy sources by 2015.

 30. 39. What is a Carbon Credit?

“ By practicing conservation tillage or planting grasses and trees, farmers and landowners are sequestering or holding carbon dioxide, and in turn, offsetting greenhouse gas emissions.”

At current market prices, a landowner can typically earn between $2 and $12 per acre per year depending upon the conservation practice. Landowners must sign a contract and commit to maintain the conservation practice through 2010

“ carbon credits,” which can then be sold on the Chicago Climate Exchange

 31. 40. Carbon Tax

A carbon tax is a tax on the carbon content of fuels — effectively a tax on the carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels (gas, oil, coal). Thus, carbon tax is shorthand for carbon dioxide tax or CO2 tax .

 32. 41. Apollo Program Clean Energy, Good Jobs

Rebuild America Clean & Green.

Make it in America

Double national investment in clean energy research and development.

Invest in green-collar job training initiatives (making homes and commercial buildings more energy efficient).
