3. As it was – Harry Styles
Why we have chose this song –
The reason we have chosen this song as we felt that it fit the main
themes of nostalgia and music evolution. When researching the song
our initial reaction was that it was breakup song but we would like to
do an alternative take on in. Matching in line with the music video. So
that the concept of the song changes. It’s upbeat 80’s synth points
fingers towards that genre, making the song feel more out of time and
less modern. Also because of the huge attraction and success that it
has a on a more modern audience. A track which had been number
one for many consecutive weeks and is overplayed by millions of
student/teens which is our aimed public audience.
4. Concept
Our initial idea for how the music video will start of is a blank room where a bunch of student fill the room as they come in
wearing their normal modern clothes, looking behind them to see if there’s a no teachers around. They move forward out
of the shot and the camera turn in one shot focusing on a centre stage. The camera pans in closer and closer and then
suddenly that’s when the music starts. The screen fades into black and white to represent an older look. As the students
come onto the stage they are all dressed in different wear to represent the time period of the fifties which they are trying
to play out. Boy and are in suits/fedora and the girls are in in pencil skirts. This will be filmed in the creative stage theatre
hall. We can use this location to our advantage as there are many multiple high points of the room which can be filmed
from many multiple angles if we have multiple cameras. The main focus is to show the students having fun. Dancing,
swapping costume and acting casual in beat with the playful base of the song. One of the boys throw their fedora hat onto
the main camera focusing on the close up shot which will transition into the 60’s period where the same people can be
seen in different costume. One scene I’d like to include to give more insightfulness to their rebellious nature is to have a
shot where the camera cuts away to a student looking outside the door and seeing if anyone is walking by. We see a much
older person walking by in a suit “presumably a teacher”, causing the student to give them the signal to stop playing the
music. The music stops, the teacher looks around in the corridor outside. Then carries on walking causing the student to
give the thumbs back up again. I think pause in between the song will be a nice addition to the music video. Creating a
sense of panic which transitions back to the music. As we get onto the 70’s the screen will fade from black and white into
colour ijn which an era costume change is appropriate as well;. The music video will work through 60;s 70’s 90’s and 2000’s
showing the many different evolutionary periods of music history that we associate with that era. The video will end with
them looking exasperated and tired from the amount of energy given out in their performance. Someone will turn and say
lunch which they'll casually say “yeah”. The student leave the stage from different multiple ends. The final shot will be an
image of harry styles winking on the projector that was behind them the whole times as the camera pans further and
further away, fading to darkness. A possible end creidts would be a good idea to finish off the video too.
5. Audience
It was around this time when we started developing our concept of what it is was we actually wanted.
We know we wanted to keep it student based and aimed around our age demographic but how that
would be done in amore effective way required more thinking. A lot of student project in the past have
been represented in a dark, moody and grim way. Usually it will be a sad song, which will consist of rain
and a dark cinematography pallet. So we wanted to go to the end of the scale and make it more
colourful/bright. This is a music video that relies on that sense of nostalgia which could also be target
towards the older song. Juxtaposing who the song is intend for. Harry styles wrote that song with
teen/young adults in mind but in our video if as it was dates back to the 1950’s then you are pointing
yourself further back to an older age demographic.
Because it’s a student project, it hasn’t got that high end budget. As we planned further we found that it
added to the charm of it. In a sense almost amateurish there just students having fun, so they don’t care
about looking too goofy or being taken too seriously. Just so long as they are having fun. I think that a
viewer will take from this at first glance the drastic changes of fashion/aesthetic through the through
the music period. The music video isn’t intended to be a selling point of that specific genre but a
parodic look back. Almost poking fun but after a more researched look. Nothing that’s been falsely
misrepresented. I saw it as we aren’t going to convince a n audience to transition from skinny jeans to
bellbottoms but hopefully more embracive to be that do because there are still people that carry on
with fashion as a representation of themselves.
6. Lyrics
Holdin' me back
Gravity's holdin' me back
I want you to hold out the palm of your hand
Why don't we leave it at that? Nothin' to say
When everything gets in the way
Seems you cannot be replaced
And I'm the one who will stay, oh
In this world, it's just us. You know it's not the same as it was
In this world, it's just us
You know it's not the same as it was
As it was, as it was
You know it's not the same
Answer the phone "Harry, you're no good alone
Why are you sittin' at home on the floor?
What kind of pills are you on?"
Ringin' the bell
And nobody's comin' to help
Your daddy lives by himself
He just wants to know that you're well, oh
In this world, it's just us. You know it's not the same as it was
In this world, it's just us
You know it's not the same as it was
As it was, as it was. You know it's not the same
Go home, get ahead, light-speed internet
I don't wanna talk about the way that it was
Leave America, two kids follow her
I don't wanna talk about who's doin' it first
As it was
You know it's not the same as it was
As it was, as it was
When deciphering more and more into the lyrics. They feel
more intimate. However that doesn't mean that it can’t be
a the romanticism of the past memories. The biggest issue
is the addressing of Harry styles in person as if someone is
talking to him. There isn’t really much of a link to it as the
repeatiton of his name appears through various verse of
the song. That’s why we will keep the last shot as the song
ends. Harry Styles in the back images of the green screen.
Finishing the notes of the song with his image as
recognition to the artist.
What I found when looking into the lyrics is the loneliness
in “in this world. Its just us.” This could be the shared
personal connection between whoever adores iconic
music industry of the 70’s or 80s. They feel lonely that in a
odern world. They are the only one that like’s that era of
music understandably today’s age is populated with music
being release now. This could disconnect them from other
people’s tastes.
