Different Perspectives
 Sue and Gail
Social and Participatory media:
    1. Why do it when I have other skills to offer?
    2. What learning do I have to support me?
    3. Is there a clear picture?
    4. Accountability issues
    5. Comfort zone issues
    6. Time constraints issues

Safe option - Teacher does all the work eg.

Tips to get started
Identify the Environment you wish to use and work through your own
cycle of action research – Plan, Act, Analyze, Reflect (build resilience):

                        • Make this environment consistently part of
your day to day class work over time:
                                  • Iron out any issues/problems over time
                                  • Build your student’s confidence (Web 2.0)

                                  • School rules always apply

                        • Go Global - Invite other classes to join you:
                                  • Let them see your day to day work
                                  • Be prepared for them to ‘lurk’

                                  • Don’t expect students or teachers to read all
instructions – be flexible (ESL issues)
                                  • Be brave and invite at least 3 other
schools/classes (safety net – too many
things can go wrong with only 1 school)
7 By Gail Casey and Sue Dunlop

What do you do if break-down 0ccurs?
Elements that can cause ongoing breakdowns:

                         Skills Internet

                                          Partnership
             Privacy Expectations

  • 7. Tips to get started Identify the Environment you wish to use and work through your own cycle of action research – Plan, Act, Analyze, Reflect (build resilience): • Make this environment consistently part of your day to day class work over time: • Iron out any issues/problems over time • Build your student’s confidence (Web 2.0) • School rules always apply • Go Global - Invite other classes to join you: • Let them see your day to day work • Be prepared for them to ‘lurk’ • Don’t expect students or teachers to read all instructions – be flexible (ESL issues) • Be brave and invite at least 3 other schools/classes (safety net – too many things can go wrong with only 1 school) 7 By Gail Casey and Sue Dunlop

Social interaction is through the online forum

  4. Gail:No. 1 greatest hurdle for me (years ago) – I was scared of having my students publish & do a bad job (I could look bad and my school looks bad – I am accountable)This leads to extra work such as checking all student email posts when working with other countries – teacher does all the work http://onedayoneworld.pbworks.com/w/page/28214235/One-Day-One-WorldComfort zone (Gail): I invite a bit of chaosClear picture - Students as valued resources to their peers and their teacherTime constraints – The need to do things differently including correction/assessmentAccountability – taking things to the next level knowing I can tick the boxes.Sue:No. 1 greatest hurdle – Need a clear picture of how this fits into everything else you have to do (parents, school, curriculum etc) - must question, then why do it?Comfort Zone (Sue):don’t hide feelings of uncomfort, I have plenty of skills – pick out the best things & build up to itFuture: Not standing doing PowerPoint but doing a blog or SkypeExtra example discussed: reading books in class.

  6. Local Streets – You basically feel comfortable travelling in these areas. Close to home, little risk taking but at times you take some different routes. Mostly familiar ground, safety in friends and neighbours around you to call in on if you need help. This could involve one small and short activity that has a traditional alternative (if things don’t work as expected) BUT something new is attempted. A bit like trying the GPS for the first time but having the paper map in case.City to City travel – Heading to the next big city with some sight seeing on the way.Off Road Adventuring – pack your first aid kit and setup all a plan to obtain all of the resources you may need. Give your travel details to friends and keep in touch with them during the journey.
  7. Privacy, Privacy and more Privacy – ongoing discussions with both students, parents and staffWhat do you do if the internet doesn’t work? Will the wireless cope?Do you have cable as a backup for the wireless?Skype:Check the country time difference carefully – check for daylight savings. Is the with skype small groups(2 or 3 students) or whole class?Other activities are needed while Skype is occurring (can be boring for those not directly involved).Need projector, speakers, extension lead and usually a spare table for the laptop/computerDo you want to record the skype session?
  8. School databases need to be current and timely – manual student data input is not good enoughEvery student should have an active and updated electronic school identity - email
