when it comes to the BEST SOLUTIONS.
“Excellence through Research, Development and Customer Care”
THISTLEBOND’s range of engineering products offer high performance repair and protection solutions to a wide variety of applications.
THISTLEBOND’s Commercial Marine Coatings provide HIGH PERFORMANCE refurbishment and protection to all types of marine vessels.
The History Of Thistlebond
Thistlebond was formed in 1953 by Mr
Charles Fergusan of Fergusan and
Timpson Ltd.At the time Fregusan and
Timpson was supplying Esso Tankers
with gasketing materials. Mr Charles
Fergusan was then approached by the
Chief Engineer of Esso Tankers; he
required a product to repair leaking pipes
and damaged equipment onboard his
vessels when they were out to sea
The History Of Thistlebond Charles
Ferguson developed a fast curing Epoxy
Resin, which could be used with Special
formulated Glass Tape and various other
materials to repair and strengthen
damaged equipment/. This product is still
manufactured today, Thistlebond
Standard Resin & Hardener, albeit in a
more advanced and improved.
For over 47 years Fergusan and Timpson developed the brand by adding to the product range and promoting the products through an international
distribution network. Today THISTLEBOND is known by marine engineers all over the world, it has a reputation for supplying high quality and
innovative products. Whether on land or at sea, Marine engineers use THISTLEBOND for planned maintenance and emergency repairs.
Since the involvement of Unique Polymer Systems in the year 2000 , we have kept alive Charles Fergusons idea of a global brand available to
Marine Engineers and Ship Owners in any country at any time.
The THISTLEBOND RANGE now covers a diverse range of products and allows a MARINE ENGINEER, NAVAL ARCHITECT, SHIP OWNER
and OFF SHORE MARINE SITUATIONS to REPAIR and PROTECT any piece of equipment on their vessel.

especially formulated for use “on board” marine vessels.
The specially selected woven poly ester fabric impregnated with a polyurethane resin, which is activated by immersion in water.
Thistlebond Thistlewarp Pipe Repair Tape is idea for engineer room rep[airs to leaking pipes in low pressure systems. As a general
guide, a repair built up to a thickness of approximately 12mm (1.2”) will withstand a maximum service pressure of 10 bar (150 psi).
Higher pressures , up to 50 bar, can be achieved by first applying a “plug” of Thistlebond UPSTRK19060 PlasSteel twiststick grade
metal – filled epoxy putty over the leak.
Pipes up to a diameter of 100mm may be repaired using THISTLEBOND THISTLEWRAP Pipe Repair Tape with holes

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Centre tape over leak site, wrap from bottom of roll, pulling firmly
throughoutapplication. After 5-7 plies, resin foam will come through the tape, which is
desirable and aided by pulling tightly.
Continue until entire roll is applied, building to a minimum thickness of 0.5” (12mm),
use
a second roll if necessary. Firmly press and smooth end of roll in the direction of
application.
Wet gloves in water, smooth and firmly press the wet resin back into the wrap.
When used in conjunction with Unique Polyemers Metal Repair UPSTRK19060,
repeat the above instructions but having first plugged the hole. Knead a small bead
of putty in a gloved hand and flatten out into a disc centrally over the hole pressing
gently and feathering out the edges. Leave to semi-harden (full cure 30 minutes)
before applying the tape, although the tape may be applied immediately if necessary.
KEEP HANDS MOVING QUICKLY AND WET GLOVES FREQUENTLY TO AVOID
STICKING.
Continue rapid hand movement pressing and polishing resin in motions around and
parallel to the pipe. Continue process until resins are no longer tacky. The repair
should have a smooth, hard surface and an enamel like appearance with no fabric
protruding through the surface.
NOTE: If a thicker application is needed, spend a little less time finishing the first roll
and immediately begin the application of the next. Finish the final roll as if a single
roll application.

CAVITATION DAMAGE REPAIRED ON SHIPS PROPELLER – GERMANY (COST SAVING: £3450)
During a complete refit and overhaul of a German Vessel, the UPS Distributor was asked to find a
solution to repairing the badly corroded propeller blades.
UPS Distr. was awarded the contract to provide our Ceramic Carbide repair Compounds and
Coatings.
UPS30 Ceramic Carbide Wearing Compound and UPS235 Abrasion Resistant Ceramic Carbide
Fluid were used to rebuild and protect the ships propellers. Our Solvent Free, two part Epoxy,
Ceramic Carbide repair systems were seen to offer the best abrasion and corrosion resistance and
were chosen ahead of many other rival suppliers.

CAVITATION DAMAGE REPAIRED ON SHIP PROPELLER – UK (COST SAVING: £5,500)
A ship repair and conversion yard in the UK approached UPS and asked the company to provide a cost
effective, high performance repair system.
The blades of the propeller were badly eroded and corroded and needed to be rebuilt and then coated
with an advanced protection coating.
The surface area was blasted and then cleaned using the UPS universal cleaner. The pitted and
eroded areas were then rebuilt using UPS230 Ceramic Carbide Wearing Compound, once the
compound had become touch dry, the entire propeller was coated with UPS235 Abrasion Resistant
Ceramic Carbide Fluid, giving the propeller blades added protection.
