The three main domains of the audit around the University of Canberra was to asses the interaction between physical activity, health eating and social interaction. The audit was performed to assess the impact of the built environment and the health issues associated.
The location that was chosen to audit was the central concourse; building 1 and 2.
Access and circulation and campus within the areas is very easy and well designed, making it easier for all individuals at the university to move around and get to where they need to be. The paved walking paths are great and provide enough space for people to to walk past. The foot paths are well connected to each other, allowing for easy movement and circulation. Having the walk paths clear and well organize can assist in the reduction of stress as the students within the campus have an open area which allows for easy walking and travelling between classes, to and from classes.
The concourse is very open area and has a significant proportion of the area, with exposure to the sun. There is not much of the sun covering and shade, which can be a health risk factor. Issues such as prolonged exposure to the sun can increase chances of developing skin cancer.
However there is adequate shading on the walk paths, avoiding the sun exposure and rain when walking around the concourse area.
Concourse are is very safe for all individual, even during the night as there is adequate lighting and it is an open area which is central to all locations within the University, making it easy to access other facilities within the University.
Active transport is greatly promoted through out the University having bicycle racks available. The availability of bike racks encourages students to utilize the facilities and services, this encourage the use of active transport. Riding a bicycle is beneficial and helpful to the individual’s health, promoting physical activity. Increase physical activity in an individuals life can assist in a longer and healthier life and assist in the prevention of some chronic health issues such as cardiovascular disease and heart disease.
Access to public transport is readily available which is great for the health of individuals as it supports in having an environment that has limited emitted gasses from cars, this in turn is healthier for the environment and the people living in it.
Food facilities are readily available to the students and offer a variety of foods. The fast food, is more readily available and cheaper than the healthier options a more expensive.
The availability of microwaves, make it easier for students to bring more foods and thus encouraging more home cooked meals and healthy eating. There are fresh fruits and salads available but are very minimal and they are not displayed and advertised well. The fruits and salads available also come in very limited amounts, they only have a certain number of the foods available for the day.
However the general student population tends to lean towards the unhealthy and fast food choices.
There is plenty of areas where students can meet and socialize. The university offers a lot of sitting areas around the concourse and in the refectory. The area is comfortable and pleasant, having art and decorations, making it pleasing to be around. The student center offers comfortable bean bags and a café for students to meet up and socialize.
Socialization can enhance and individual’s sense of wellbeing and belonging. Social interaction, can prevent health issues and mental illnesses such as depression. Thus, having a great balance of socialization can encourage individuals to easily meet their goals and strengthen your mental health through the reduction of stress and can result in having better health outcomes.
The University does encourage healthy living to students through a variety of ways. There designated smoking areas within the campus and this can assist in the reducing the rates of passive smoking onto the non-smoker students and bystanders.
The water fountains around the campus encourage the drinking of water instead of the purchasing the unhealthier alternatives.
The provision of bicycle racks encourages a healthier and more active way of transportation. Active transport if great the for the health and also can be linked with the socialization aspect of the university as it can also be a form of socializing and getting outdoors.
