For a game that’s over five years old, Fallout 3 is surprisingly still one worth playing. With steep
discounts on regular sales and new mods being released to this day, there’s still plenty of room for
new fans to discover Bethesda’s sprawling revival of the critically acclaimed Fallout franchise. That
doesn’t mean it’s a perfect or even great game, however – it is in the Gamebryo engine, after all.
With a few (dozen) mods however, Fallout 3 can be moulded into an incredibly immersive
experience, or a sandbox for running around as a superhero if that’s your thing. From new quests
and locations to gameplay tweaks and overhauls, there’s plenty of mods for every player. Whether
you thought the vanilla experience was too easy, bland, ugly, or boring for your tastes, there’s a
mod for you. Want a more challenging and immersive first person shooter, closer to the STALKER
or Metro series? The Nexus has plenty of files for you. Maybe you like what’s already in the game,
and you’re yearning for even more Fallout? If so, the modding community has you covered. Do you

10. Existence 2.0 – Robot Radio

2. There’s a good handful of mods that add new radio stations to make your lonely journeys a little
more bearable (as much as we love Danny Kaye and the Andrews Sisters, we can only listen to
“Bongo Bongo Bongo” so many times), but Existence 2.0 is one of the best. Featuring a creepy
robot DJ and an even creepier selection of ambient music, Existence 2.0 is sure to unnerve you as
you explore the terrifying post‐apocalyptic Capital Wasteland. Though it might not be the most
lore‐friendly (for more fitting Fallout music, check out CONELRAD 640‐1240 by the same mod
author), Existence 2.0′s ambient terror tunes are perfect for exploring a dark metro tunnel, or
walking the wasteland at night when you can’t see five feet in front of your face. If you want a more
horrifying Fallout experience, consider downloading this mod, especially if you’re a fan of the works
of Mark Morgan and Akira Yamaoka.
9. ATMS Alternative Travel – Morrowind

3. Did you like The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind? Do you hate fast travel? If so, the ATMS Alternative
Travel mod is just right for you. With this mod installed, you know have a couple of alternate
options for getting across the unforgiving wasteland instead of instantly fast travelling everywhere.
Walking everywhere in a game such as this, with all of its fetch quests, can be a little unreasonable.
That’s where this mod comes in. Instead of fast travelling from anywhere, or having to walk all the
time, this mod gives you a happy medium, allowing to you instantly travel only at specific locations.
From Big Town to Rivet City, the player can pay a small fee to be ferried across the radioactive
Potomac, allowing them to access the major points of the Capital without feeling like they’re
cheating. For the rural side of the wasteland, the player as the option to teleport to any discovered
location from one of four newly added RobCo TelePod research stations. With eight total fast travel
options, this mod is perfect for any player who wants the satisfaction of exploring the wasteland,
without the unreasonable hassle of walking absolutely everywhere.
8. Arefu Expanded

4. Ever feel like the settlements of the Capital Wasteland were a wee bit too small? Arefu Expanded
addresses this by doing exactly what it says on the tin. Rather than a collection of three shacks on
a bridge, Arefu is now a sprawling settlement – an oasis in the wild wasteland. Not content to
simply add a few extra NPCs and buildings, the mod author went the extra mile by expanding the
humble town of Arefu in the vertical sense, adding a rickety under‐town as well as re‐imagining
the original settlement. This mod doesn’t just make Arefu bigger. It goes above and beyond by
adding over 600 lines of fully voiced dialogue, sixteen new characters, four new quests, unique
weapons, and even a radio station featuring lore‐friendly music for the player to enjoy. If you’re
looking for a whole lot of extra content and a brand new settlement to explore, look no further.
7. DCnteriors Project
You stumble through the apocalyptic ruins of Washington D.C., hulking monstrous mutants in tow.
You rush over to a crumbling building only to find… another boarded up door. The amount of

5. inaccessible interiors was one of the biggest problem plaguing Fallout 3′s game world, and the
DCInteriors Project mod sets out to fix this with dozens of unique, lore‐friendly locations to explore
– from ruined shops ripe for looting, to explorable homes and boxcars. If you ever wanted
more locations to explore, get this mod. It adds a mind‐boggling amount of new content, all of
which fits perfectly into the base game. These locations aren’t anything too far out of the realm of
possibility, they’re simply more of what you already have in the vanilla experience. This mod just
adds more Fallout, and who doesn’t want that?
6. Simple Realism
Ever felt that Fallout 3 was too easy? Tired of feeling like an overpowered god instead of a lowly
lone wanderer? So did the author behind Simple Realism, who set out to overhaul the difficulty of
the game whilst remaining as close to the vanilla experience as possible. Without modifying any
locations or items, Simple Realism manages to overhaul how you approach the game without
getting too complicated. Proving that big things come in small packages, Simple Realism is less than
100KB in size, and yet still manages to drastically alter the feel of the game. Gone are the days of
shooting raiders in the head twenty times before they go down, and vice versa. No longer will you
bask in radioactive pools and jump off ledges without a care in the world. Oh, and you can forget
about stockpiling mountains of supplies. Loot is rarer and your carrying capacity has been reduced.
Weapons hit harder, damage resistance is more important than ever, and stimpacks now heal over
time, just like Hardcore Mode in Fallout: New Vegas. Don’t worry if any of that isn’t your style. Due
to its modular nature, certain features of this mod can be toggled on and off, allowing you to make
a mod that fits your play style. Simple Realism is a must‐download for any hardcore player looking
for a challenge, or anyone looking to make the Capital Wasteland a harsher, more apocalyptic place.
5. Flora Overhaul

6. Legendary modder Vurt is well known for his meticulous flora overhauls, all of which breath new
life into a game, sometimes literally. The Fallout 3 iteration of his work is no exception to this. This
mod, simply titled Flora Overhaul, does pretty much what you’d expect: it overhauls the flora of
the Capital Wasteland. To say that it merely re‐textures the game world would be understatement,
though that is exactly what it does. Vurt’s Flora Overhaul for Fallout 3 doesn’t just change the
colour of the wasteland’s dead plant‐life – it completely overhauls the game’s atmosphere and
visual tone. Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of green, this mod comes in four flavours: Forested
Edition, Dead Edition, Total Devastation Edition, and Lite. The first is the most drastic change,
turning the Capital into a beautiful green paradise, albeit still a horrifying anarchistic one. It’s
certainly not lore‐friendly, but if you really liked the visual design of The Last of Us, you’ll love this.
Dead Edition is much closer to the base game, with slightly more pronounced vegetation, though
still withered and dying. Instead of bare trees and desert sands, you’ll get brown trees and tall dead
grass. The Total Devastation version offers bleaker wasteland with no leaves of which to speak. Lite
is a minimilstic approach to the overhaul, sticking as close to the vanilla experience as possible
whilst still replacing a couple of the default trees and groundcovers. Just when you thought the
wasteland couldn’t get any more beautiful and/or bleak, Vurt’s Flora Overhaul promises to give
your game a whole new look that will keep you going for several more playthroughs.
4. Sydney Follower

7. When mod author drg6520 first played Fallout 3 he was more than a little disappointed to find that
Sydney, a character he found to be far more interesting than any of the original companions, was
unable to be recruited as a follower after the Stealing Independence quest. When he started
playing the PC version, he set out to rectify this with the Sydney Follower mod, which does exactly
what you expect, and maybe a little more. The creator of this mod could have settled for a couple
extra lines in the dialogue that allowed Sydney to follow the player mindlessly, but that wasn’t
enough. Instead, he went out of his way to add extra functionality and content, all of which comes
together to make Sydney one of the best companions in the series. Rather than leave her a silent
and static follower, the mod author gave Sydney over 400 lines of unique dialogue, all voiced by
the original voice actress. For insane dedication to a mod that’s more of an expansion than a simple
add‐on, the Sydney Follower mod easily earns a spot on this list.
3. Alton, IL

8. What’s that you say? Five expansion packs wasn’t enough for you? Okay, have one more. Quite
possibly the largest and most expansive mods ever created for Fallout 3, Alton IL, lets you explore ‐
you guessed it – Alton, Illinois. An expansion two years in the making, Alton features a hostile open
world torn apart by rivalling factions for the player to explore, with plenty of lore and dialogue to
back it up, thanks to a talented team of voice actors. It’s not just the size of the content that makes
Alton a must‐download, however. What makes this such a great mod is its dedication to detail; the
branching main quest features a great degree of choice and moral ambiguity with an epic story
that unfolds across a fully explorable world map twice the size of Point Lookout, separate from the
base game. If you have most of the official DLCs and want to explore more, Alton won’t disappoint.
2. Fellout
Outside of ENB presets, the best way to beautify your game is Fellout. Aside from the funny
name, Hattix’s mod makes a few performance‐friendly adjustments to make the Capital Wasteland
looking an awesome player to explore again. First and foremost, this mod removes the gross green
tint through which the game world used to be filtered. It also tweaks the water, giving it a cleaner,
clearer look. This mod might not appeal to everyone, but anyone who desires a purer experience
will certainly want to download this before anything else. If you fancy yourself a hardcore player
who seeks an immersive experience above all else, you’ll probably appreciate how dark nights and
interiors are with Fellout installed. Maybe now you’ll think twice before venturing out into the
wastes in the middle of the night.
1. Fallout Wanderer’s Edition

9. If you had to download just one mod, it would probably have to be Fallout Wanderer’s Edition.
Less of a mod and more of a complete overhaul, this sets out to enhance the core gameplay
mechanics behind Fallout 3 along with the welcome addition of new content. The first‐person
shooter aspect is now much stronger, making for a fresh experience that requires player skill as
well as deep character growth. The roleplaying elements have been improved, too. The game now
features deeper, more meaningful RPG mechanics, lending greater depth and meaning to the
player’s actions and choices. FWE is perfect for anyone yearning for a challenge. Expect less loot,
more injuries, and a frantic fight for survival as you struggle to meet daily needs, and that’s without
mentioning the new weapons and armour sets have been added, with a rebalancing of the existing
ones. Did you like the old Fallout games? If so, enjoy the forty new weapons from previous Fallout
titles that have been distributed across the wasteland. Maybe you just want to take chems all day
long? If that’s the case, you’ll have forty‐plus new drugs with which to experiment. The amount of
content added by this mod is so mind‐bogglingly huge that listing them all here is simply impossible.
From new weapons and armour to major gameplay changes, Fallout Wanderer’s Edition doesn’t
just make Fallout 3 feel like a whole new game. It makes it feel like the game it always should have
been.
