2. In this modern world where culture and art is rarely recognized, Dubai International Dance Competition (DIDC) is sieving its way
through the era and marking the importance of dance.
“DIDC-The Challenge” is a home production of gatecrasher events and is a series of dance competitions that caters to all ages,
nationalities, dance styles and rhythm.
A platform for all dance enthusiasts within the region to showcase their talents, gain fame and recognition. It is the first ever dance
competition to be held in Dubai where participants from all over UAE, irrespective of their age, will display their talent.
DIDC is open to all excluding Professional(s)/Pro-Am(s), however they are encouraged to showcase their talent at DIDC
competitions.
DIDC series comprises of:

 Students Challenge – Bring It On…
 Corporate Challenge – Reboot Your Senses

3. The Objective:
 to set a new standard in the Middle East's dance competition circuit
 to celebrate the culture, creativity and positive physical expression
 to showcase dance from various cultures and open the lines of communication between our diverse population
 to promote and reward positive physical activity and recreation
Importance of Dance & Its Benefits

The Competition:
 DIDC is to open to all dance forms, (not limited to, Classical, Folk, Ballroom, Latin, Swing, Bollywood, or Street forms of dance)
 Entry categories: Solo, Duo/Trio and Group performances
 An elimination round will be carried out a week prior to the finals
 The competition will not only assemble teams from all over the country, but will also bring together people from different
backgrounds to appreciate their unique cultures and talents

4. The Competition Dates:
 2010 (05 Feb, 30 Apr & 28 May), Dubai
The Prize:
 Winners will walk away with cash scholarships and gifts which are left at the discretion of the competition sponsors

is a diverse and one of a kind competition.

5. Nrityanjali – Reviving Indian Culture – is the first in the series. The word ‘nritya’ meaning the portrayal of mood through
facial expressions, hand gestures, and position of the legs and feet and ‘anjali’ meaning offering or submission.
India is a land where thousands of year old tradition of fine arts, classical and folk music and dances has originated. Through this
competition, DIDC will render homage to the Indian classical and folk dance forms and will at the same time revive the culture and
tradition of India in the mind and hearts of the new generation.
Indian Classical:
Some of the world-famous classical dance forms that originated and evolved in India are Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kathakali,
Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and Odissi. The Classical Dance Competition is open to both Groups and Individuals.
Performances where only individual performances will be judged on age divisions listed below:
Junior: 5 to 14 years Senior: 15 years and above
Folk Dance:
Indian folk dances, including the various tribal dance forms, are product of different socio-economic set up and traditions. Indian
folk and tribal dances are simple and are performed to express joy. India has festivals and celebrations virtually every day which
adds to the richness of the Indian culture. Since every festival is accompanied by celebration, folk dances have become an integral
part of our social milieu. Listed below, but not limited to, are folk and tribal dances from various parts of India.

6. North India – Dumhal, Hikat, Namagen, Hurka Baul, Chholiya, Bhangra, Gidha, Dhamyal
North-East India – Bihu, Hajgiri, Nongkrem, Dhol-Cholom
South India – Padayani, Kummi, Kolattam, Perini, Thapetta Gullu
South-West India – Dollu Kunitha, Ghode Modni, Lava Dance of Minicoy, Tarangmel
East India – Chhau, Brita, Dalkhai, Goti Puas
West India – Dandiya, Tera Tali, Dindi and Kala, Garba, Koli
Central India – Gaur, Muria, Saila, Karma, Kaksar
The Folk Dance Competition is open to Group Performances only and there is no age barrier in the formation of groups.

7. Prof. Kalamandalam Leelamma
Prof. Kalamandalam Leelamma one of the foremost Mohiniyattam exponent of India.
She had her intensive lessons in Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi under
Kalamandalam Chandrika.
Her research in Mohiniyattam is outstanding. She innovated more than 80 new steps
(Adavus) for Mohiniyattam and subdivided and classified all the steps in
Mohiniyattam. It is the first attempt by any Mohiniyattam dancer in the history of
Mohiniyattam. Prof. Kalamandalam Leelamma choreographed around 100 new
items, various padams, poems and dance drama for different occasions and all are
performed in and outside the Country. A book on the New steps and old
incorporating all prevailing steps and history of Mohiniyattam is finished and is going
to be published by Kerala Kalamandalam. Now she is concentrating in performing
new padams and varnams by contemporary poets in the classical style. After her
work as the Head of Department of Dances and Professor in Kerala Kalamandalam
(1997-2007), the pioneer institution of classical dances in the world, she is now
working as Dean in the same faculty of the Deemed University.

Awards
 Panel Member of ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) for performing Mohiniyattam outside India
 Award from Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi, Govt. of Kerala in 1990 for her outstanding contribution in Mohiniyattam.
 Senior fellowship in Mohiniyattam from the cultural Dept. Govt of India in 1997 on new composition in Mohiniyattam
 Functioned as Director of the Dance festival held in Paris, organised by ARTA the official organ of cultural events for French government in
October 1999.
 Natya Mohini title by the Kunchan Nambiar Smaraka govt. of Kerala in 2003 for her outstanding transcreation of “Kalyana Sougandhikam
Thullal” in to Mohiniyattam format, the maiden event in the history of Mohiniyattam and Thullal.
 Natya Sree title by Kaladarpanam, Ernakulam for her outstanding contribution to Mohiniyattam for the last 3 decades.
 Performed Mohiniyattam in U.K. (Great Britain) in 1990 organised by Kalachetana for consecutive 3 months in different stages in Britain.
Again in 1991 performance in Britain.
 Performed Mohiniyattam in Gulf countries during 2000 and 2003 in Bahrin, Doha, Kuwait and Mascot.
 Participated almost all major Dance festivals of India, representing Kerala and Kerala Kalamandalam since 1974.
 Worked as Reader of Dances in the Dept. of Fine Arts during 1995-1997 in Sree Sankara Sanskrit University, Kalady, Trivandrum Regional
Centre.

9. Prof. Kalamandalam Leelamma Contd.
Also the Member of Board of Studies in the above Universities since 1997 and continues.
 Expert member of the selection Board for young dancers aparting Scholarships by Cultural Dept. of Govt of India
 Professor and Head of the Dept. of Dances Kerala Kalamandalam Cheruthuruthy from 1997 till 2007.
 Functioned as the Hon. Director of the first National Seminar in Mohiniyattam Conducted by Swathichitra, Trissur, the Sole Institution for
Research in Mohiniyattam of the Country for 7 days in may 2001.
 Expert member of Doordarsan for selecting dancers and aparting Title Grads to the Artists.
 Recently, considering her proficiency in the field of Mohiniyattam.
 Directorate of Doordarsan/New Dehli has produced a CD in Mohiniyattam incorporating her excellent performance.
2007: Award from Kerala Kalamandalam for her great work as Professor and Head of the Dept. of Dances Kerala Kalamandalam, as same for her
great involvement for Mohiniyattam.

10. Guru Nandini Singh
Born on 7th June 1952, Nimmi was initiated into the magic world of dance by her mother
Late Janaki Devi, who herself was a singer of some repute. Nandini was fortunate enough
to be sculpted by great Guru’s of kathak, Guru Hiralal, Guru Ganeshi Hiralal and Pt.
Sunder Prasad. These kathak maestros helped her in getting the finest nuances in this
dance form.
At Smt. Niana Devi’s Raag Rang conference, where Ustd. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan,
Ustd. Hafiz Ali Khan, Badi Moti Bai performed, Nandini, with her debut performance
delighted the audience. Her whirlwind brhamaris, sharp and neat tihaees, difficult
chakradhars and other episodes prevalent commonly in Kathak form, were far beyond
expectations from a teenager. By fifteen she was already an accomplished dancer. In late
60’s itself, she had carved a niche for herself in kathak, blossoming into one of the finest new
generation kathak dancers as Nandini. Further, in her persuit for perfection, she got
associated with Pt. Devi Lal, and Durga Lal, who brought along added enhancements in her
dance.

11. Guru Nandini Singh Contd.
Over the years, Nandini featured in innumerable recitals in and outside India. She combines her presentations a fine balance of
Nritta, Abhinaya and Lyrical Beauty. She has also to her credits several choreographic works. She has rendered her performances
in all prestigious festivals throughout India and abroad, in Russia, Turkmenistan, Khrigystan, US of A, UK Germany, Caribbean
Islands, West Indies, Afghanistan, Mauritius, Sri Lanka etc. Nandini, in her effort to awaken our younger generation the sensibilities
and aesthetics of dance, conducts regular classes, lecture demonstrations and concerts organised all over India by Spic – Macay,
and Bal Bahwan organisations. She has also formulated a charitable organisation in 1996 named “Vaasuki Natyashala”.
In addition to being an excellent dancer with beauty and charming personality, she has proven herself to be an excellent teacher
and acquired formidable reputation by being a senior teacher for some period of time at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi and is
presently Guru at Sri Ram Bhartiya Kala Kendra for the last 16 years. Raja Ram Mohan Roy foundation felicitated her with
the Best Teacher award in 1998 presented by the Vice President of India. Apart from other prestigious awards like Chirag –e-
Nau, Rajasthan Rang Manch award, Abivyakti Kala Sangam award, Outstanding Woman of the Year award by Indian Air
Force etc, she is also a recipient of Senior Fellowship from the Government of India, for her research on Parans in Kathak.

12. Shri Dominique Delorme
An internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer in Indian dance whose productions
have travelled throughout Western and Eastern Europe, the USA, South-East Asia, South
America and the Caribians.
A soul-searching trip to India in 1983 sparked Dominique’s interest in the people and
culture of India. On his return to France in 1985, he started learning Bharatanatyam from
Malavika (a Paris based Bharatanatyam dancer). In 1987, with a scholarship from the
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ICCR-Indian Council for Cultural Relations,
he pursued his advanced training under V.S. Muthuswamy Pillai in Madras.
Simultaneously, he received training in ‘nrtya’ from Kalanidhi Narayanan and Anuradha
Jagannathan, in Carnatic vocal music from Sulochana Pattabiraman and in
nattuvangam from Kamala Rani of Kalakshetra. He also studied Tamil at the Madras
Institute for Asian Studies. In 1989, Dominique started working under Dr. Padma
Subrahmanyam on the Natyashastra.
In 2000, he was awarded the prestigious ‘Villa Medicis Hors Les Murs’ and the ‘Romain Rolland’ fellowships by the French
government to continue his research on Natyashastra.

13. Shri Dominique Delorme Contd.
Following his Arangetram in 1990, Dominique continued to perform solo throughout India, Malaysia, Singapore, Western and Eastern
Europe, West Indies and the US. He played Narada in ‘Krishnam Vande Jagathgurum’ choreographed by Sudharani Raghupathy and
Siva in ‘Natya Shastra Avataranam’ by Padma Subrahmanyam. His first solo production ‘Nandanar’ toured India and Europe and
received critical acclaim and became his masterpiece. He continued his creative efforts with ‘Seeds of Light’ (1991) with Shakuntala and
‘Skin Deep’ (1995-96) in collaboration with Kalpana, both French Bharatanatyam dancers. ‘Dance with the Gods!’ (1997), “The
dancer and his soul” (2006) and ‘Ardhanareeswara’ (2002) with Malavika were productions staged by Nita Klein that have also toured
Europe and India.
Dominique along with a Tango, contemporary, hip-hop and West Indian slave dancer made up ‘The Migrators’ who explored a poem by
Damas, a West Indian poet in their own dance vocabulary. The production titled ‘Black Label’ and staged by Janie Jérémie toured France,
West Indies and South America from 1999 to 2002. His solo productions ‘Karana’(2003) and ‘Shiva, the lord of sleep’(2007) inspired
from his research on the dance sculptures of ancient India are acclaimed throughout Europe and the USA. They have created deep
interest in the revival of dance, theater and martial arts techniques which had been lost for centuries. He has choreographed several
group choreographies such as “Ganga” (2005) for the Arpana dance company in the USA in collaboration with Pandit Birju Maharaj
and Saswati Sen, “Gods’ dance”(2004) and ”Shiva, the creation of rythms, sounds and languages” (2005) with his own company
in France.
As he continues performing, he regularly conducts conferences, classes, workshops, Natya Shastra camps and group choreographies in
France, Germany, Switzerland and the USA. He is a member of the scholarships’ panel for the French ministry for foreign affairs, offering
new generations of dancers and musicians to pursue their training in India in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
