The lateral compartment of the leg:
The lateral compartment of the leg overlies the lateral surface of the shaft of the fibula. It is separated
from the anterior compartment by the anterior intermuscular septum, and from the posterior
compartment by the posterior intermuscular septum.
It contains two muscles: peroneus longus and peroneus brevis, both of which are evertors of the foot
and both of which are weak plantar flexors of the ankle joint. The nerve of the lateral compartment is
the superficial peroneal nerve.

Concerning the peroneus longus muscle/tendon:
Peroneus longus is innervated by the superficial peroneal nerve.
It is an evertor of the foot. It is also a weak plantarflexor of the foot.
Its distal attachment is the plantar aspect of the base of the 1st metatarsal and the medial
cuneiform. It is peroneus brevis which is attached to the styloid process at the base of the
5th metatarsal.

The lateral compartment of the leg:
The peroneal artery is a direct branch of the posterior tibial artery. Despite its name, it lies within the posterior
compartment of the leg, not the lateral compartment.
The trunk of the common peroneal nerve enters the substance of the peroneus longus muscle within which it divides
into its two terminal branches: superficial peroneal nerve and deep peroneal nerve.
The tendon of peroneus longus runs in a groove on the plantar surface of the cuboid, not navicular. The tendon the
inserts onto the base of the 1st metatarsal, not head of the metatarsal.

The superficial peroneal nerve:
The superficial peroneal nerve originates in the substance of the peroneus longus muscle, not
peroneus brevis. It innervates peroneus longus and brevis but not peroneus tertius (which, being
a muscle of the anterior compartment is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve).
The superficial peroneal nerve innervates most of the skin on the dorsum of the foot but none on
the sole.
Peroneus longus and brevis are both evertors of the foot.
