“Conviction—
‘B.P.’!””
Article #10 of “What is ‘Revival,’
and how does it happen?”
Let me first of all explain the unusual
title we’ve given to this article: We are going to be talking
about the part that “conviction” plays in an effective prayer
life, and since we’re looking today at a particular promise that
Jesus made to the disciples concerning the work of the Holy
Spirit following the Day of Pentecost,we’ve called this article
“Conviction—‘B.P.’!” (the “B.P.” stands for “Before
Pentecost:”).
“Let me guess, Pastor Chuck—next week’sessay is
gonna be called ‘Conviction—A.P.!’ right? like in ‘After
Pentecost’?”
Right on target!
If you remember, the Holy Spirit was very much
connected with the coming of Jesus into the world. We don’t
have the space to list all the passages,so let’s just say that the
Spirit was involved in Jesus’conception (Matthew 1:18-20),
His baptism (Matthew 3:16), His temptation (Matthew 4:1)
and His ministry (Matthew 12:28)—to name only a few.
But on the night before Christ’s Crucifixion, Jesus
spoke several times about the ministry that the Holy Spirit
would have after He himself had ascended into Heaven.
The passage we’re focusing on today is John 16:7-8
(AMP):“...I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it
is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go
away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor,
Helper, Advocate,Intercessor, Strengthener,Standby) will not
come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away,
I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].
And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world
and bring demonstration to it about sin and about
righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with
God) and about judgment...”
“Say, Pastor, that ‘convict’stuff soundspretty
serious—like what a prosecuting attorney triesto make
happen!”
You’re ‘way ahead of me, brother! You’re right: it is
serious stuff—in fact, it’s the only way that a person can
genuinely come to Christ!
“I’m not sure I understand.”
Well, let’s begin with the Greek word for “convict”:
“ejlevgcw” (“ell-EHN-koh”). According to Louw and Nida, it
means “...to state that someone has done wrong, with the
implication that there is adequate proof of such wrongdoing –
‘to rebuke, to reproach...' ”
In other words, the toughest thing about getting
someone “saved” is that they first have to realize that they’re
“lost”! What some aggressive believers don’t understand is
that THEY are NOT the ones who “convict” the unsaved
about their condition—that is strictly the work of the Holy
Spirit!
This is what Jesus promised the disciples (and us,of
course...) would happen after He had “gone away from them.”
The interesting thing is that one of the sure-fire signs that
Revival has come to a church and/orcommunity today is that
unbelievers are convicted of their sins!
Listen to what happened on the Day of Pentecost,
after the followers of Christ had been filled with the Holy
Spirit. Peter had preached his message concerning who Jesus
was and what He had come to do—as well as what had been
done to Him when they crucified Him: “...when they heard
this, they were pierced to the heart [convicted], and said to
Peter and the rest of the apostles,‘Brethren, what shall we
do?’ And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let each of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”
(Acts 2:37-38 NASB)
There are many implications of this “doctrine of conviction by
the Holy Spirit”—especially as it is related to our prayer life:
1. First of all, as believers we are always to pray for
conviction for OURSELVES.
We will talk in a bit more detail about this in our next
article, but one of the keys to true Revival is praying that
God will make us aware of anything in our lives that is
hindering the work of the Holy Spirit in and through us!
(See Psalm 139:23-24)
2. In addition, we are to systematically pray that God
will convict our FELLOW-BELIEVERS.
3. When I have my early-morning prayer time Tuesday
through Friday mornings of each week, I pray for my
brothers and sisters in Christ—both those who are
members of the First Family, and others that God has laid
on my heart. One of the primary things I pray for is that
God would CONVICT and CONTROL EACH OF
THEM!
3. We are also to pray for any UNBELIEVERS who are
in our “circle of acquaintance.”
I urge the members of our church family to have a list
with them (at all times) of men and women and young
people, etc., who need to know Christ. Quite often, the
reason we have trouble with family, co-workers,
neighbors, etc. is that these troubled people don’t have the
joy in their hearts that comes from receiving Christ and
letting Him work in and through their lives—and so they
need to be “convicted.”
4. Finally, we must ultimately expand our prayers to
encompass ALL UNBELIEVERS IN THE WORLD.
One easy way to do this—and one that might give you
more hope for our lost and dying world—is that every
time you hear a newscast about some terrible thing that
has happened, stop right then and there and pray for
everyone involved, and the people who live in the same
locale. Askthat God would speakto everyone that has
been affected by the tragedy, and convict them of their
SIN—and of the LOVE of the SAVIOR! You don’t have
to be in a particular place to have God work there;
remember: God is EVERYWHERE!
