Many people are aware of something of particular interest to them which conventional wisdom gets badly wrong but assume that one thing is all that really needs to be fixed while the status quo is otherwise fine. Once you escape your silo and start seriously looking around, it becomes obvious that most things you take for granted are pretty much stuffed too. This presentation to CVAF highlights a few of them and argues that adversary systems are no longer fit for purpose.

As increasing amounts of humanities data comes online, scholars face new challenges in adapting traditional research, dissemination, and teaching practices. Without pretending to have all the answers, this presentation will address a constellation of related questions: What do humanists gain from using new techniques for quick charting or mapping of their data? How can we lower the technological barrier? Does this compromise the deep analysis so valued in the humanities? How is data in the humanities changing the relationship between researchers and archivists, as well as the nature of scholarly collaboration? How does our evaluation of historical scholarship need to change? How much do algorithms and data literacy need to be a part of humanities courses? What happens when we can’t understand where our data is coming from or what our digital tools are doing? Fred Gibbs is an Assistant Professor of History at George Mason University and Director of Digital Scholarship at the Center for History and New Media. This Digital Scholarship seminar will be facilitated by Kathryn Tomasek, Associate Professor of History at Wheaton College (MA) and will take place online in NITLE’s Virtual Auditorium. When people are exposed to the new for the first time their reaction, quite rightly, is generally one of caution and perhaps a degree of suspicion. And, when that ‘new born’ is a novel technology, reactions can quickly become amplified and biased toward the dystopian by the sensationalism of media and mis-information of social networks. In this modern era I think we can also safely assume that Hollywood has more than a ‘bit part’ in nurturing extreme reactions with movies such as Terminator, AI and Ex-Machina. Our purpose here is to dispel the modern myth that technology is, or can be, inherently evil and a direct threat to humanity. We do so by positing three basic axioms: “Without technology we would know and understand almost nothing” “The greatest threat to humanity is humanity” “If technology progress and societal advance stall, then civilisations collapse” Having briefly establishing these in the context of our wider history, we focus on the Industrial Revolutions and their beneficial upside and consequential negatives. We then move on to examine Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Life, and Quantum Computing in the context of our current needs and realising sustainable futures, and the survival of our civilisation.

This book centers around a mathematical principle labelled ‘matrices’. This author, whose memory is about as tough as a tungsten trap, vividly recalls studying matrices at high school in the 1980s. Students in the class asked our teachers to offer real-life applications. They couldn’t. I recall asking a mathematics teacher in 2014 who teaches pre university matriculation level math at a private school. He is a smart fox with a Masters in pure math. He couldn’t offer an application. He seemed to try and make out he could. I can sniff bamboozle manure miles away. Perhaps there are real-life applications for matrices. Just as there are real-life purposes for Sine, Cosine and Tangent. In 1986, I memorized that Sine equals opposite over hypotenuse. I earned credit for this rote fact in grades 9 to 11. Thirty plus years later, I have absolutely no idea how or why this meaningless fact (or fabrication) can improve the quality of my life or others. A great deal of what we are forced to learn at school, work and society are enslavement rituals that aim to trap us into a set of meaningless matrices. Automatic rules that reward us with credit and penalties drive this system. Most men who refuse to choke themselves with a functionless necktie, symbolic bondage, will never rise the corporate slavery ladder. The same system controls ambitious corporate women who must wear makeup and execute their role as docile dolly birds. May this book offer one or more ideas that can empower you to escape this gulag matrix. This prison planet ultimately serves to benefit the 0.001% such as inbred royals and fake apex clergy who use our taxes and donations to live trillionaire lifestyles behind their childish velvet curtains.
