This document discusses SURFconext, a next generation collaboration infrastructure across Dutch academic institutions developed by SURF foundation. It provides an overview of the Dutch academic landscape including 14 research universities and 39 higher professional education institutions. It then discusses SURFconext from the perspectives of libraries and virtual research environments. It provides examples of SURFconext implementation at the University of Amsterdam and scenarios for collaboration across institutions. It discusses lessons learned and positions SURFconext as a cloud service broker to enable access to commercial and research services.
This PowerPoint helps students to consider the concept of infinity.

8. Monolithic is restrictive..
We’re stuck with: There is need for:
Private & closed Open & widely accessible
Discipline oriented Researcher in the centre
Focused inwards Focus on relations & networks
Total(itarian) ERP solutions Integration, loosely coupled
1990’s architecture Relational systems & apps

30. SURFconext = CSB
SURFmarket a cloud service broker: “A cloud service broker
(CSB) plays an intermediary role in cloud computing. CSB’s
make it easier for organizations to consume and maintain
cloud services, particularly when they span multiple
providers. (Gartner)”
31. Lessons Learned
Technology was not a problem but OpenSocial doesn’t
contain role information, extension needed (VOOT)
Large vendors only open to incoming integration
HE Institutions have “Cold feet”
Legal differences between US & EU
Serious impact on existing campus ICT infrastructure

Quick TOC: Driek short intro about the context of conext, the Dutch academic landscape, and the issues it aims to solve After that Frank will take over for more details. There will be time for questions at the end - but we ’ d prefer it it you interrupt!
Uni ’ s less varied than poly ’ s; the 6 largest HBO ’ s have 50% marketshare of students; also, the smallest uni is 22% in size of the largest, with HBO ’ s the smallest is <1% of the largest (in # of students). Economies of scale have become important, as on one hand more competition for students, OTOH more and more is demanded of institutions. Trent towards more cooperation. OTOH a spirit of “ friendly competition ” . Universities are pretty homogenic in research:student ratio. SURF: best compared to JISC (but with 1/3 of budget per student) SURF: network (dutch edu internet backbone), supercomputing (sara), innovation (foundation), and Market – negotiate nationwide campus license contracts since 1991, at the moments with 120 different vendors. Oh, and UvA is the largest of the Uni ’ s : ). Sources: http://www.hbo-raad.nl/hbo-raad/feiten-en-cijfers http://www.vsnu.nl/Universiteiten/Alle-universiteiten.htm

Why the library is interested in VRE ’ s (and in effect, a driver for UvAConext). Treloar ’ s 3 silo model. Focus on 3 rd silo has not been effective, we must interneve to offer services earlier in the academic workflow.
Inspiration for our approach is the DaMaRO project from Oxford (which had a session this CNI fall 12 Monday 1600-1700). As you see, it gets already more complex.
And if we add the overlapping projects, it becomes very complex.
It ’ s complicated. But monolithic is out.
We want this: integrated portal.
… and this is what happens in practice. 8 separate, unconnected systems each work better than a monolithic system.
Surfconext: superglue.

Role= researcher, student, administration, which essential for the functionality of some systems like Sakia SURF market plays essential role in dealing with large (and small) commercial vendors Everybody is looking at each other Common law vs roman law, patriot act.
