Financing electricity is very critical for
developing countries for which Ghana is no
exception. Ghana has been going through
challenges about power generation and this
has resulted intermittent power supply.
This challenge has created inconveniences
and collapsed of several businesses
especially small and medium enterprises.
According to experts, these challenges were
as results of finances in the energy sector.

Africa Centre for Energy Policy
(ACEP), Dr. Mohammed Amin
Adam explained that the current
energy crisis is overshadowed by
a much bigger financial crisis
that will keep the country in
persistent darkness until more
than $1billion debt albatross is
removed.

Giving the breakdown of the debt, he revealed that
government owes Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)
$500million while ECG owes the Volta River Authority
(VRA) more than 1billion Ghana Cedis.
In turn, VRA owes N-Gas of Nigeria $170million while Sunon Asogli owes VRA more
than $100 million. The tangle of debt does not end there. Without giving numbers,
Amin Adams revealed VALCO owes VRA while ECG owes Asogli.
He emphases that ECG cummulative debt is about $1billion,

This year the World Bank Group’s approved a US$60 million
International Development Association (IDA) credit for
Ghana to improve the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG)
financial performance, minimize its commercial losses, and
ultimately contribute to increased revenue and cash flow.

Government needs to pay bills of its agencies
promptly
Consumers should allow to pay realistic price of
electricity they used
Subsidies should be given only to the valuables in the
society not to those who has the ability and capacity
to pay

between public-private partnerships.
Private companies should be allow to generate and
distribute power and consumers also needs to be
allow to choose the company they want to supply
them with power
