This document provides information about a Horizon 2020 call for proposals on "Climate Services for Africa". It summarizes the key details of the call, including that it aims to develop climate services tailored to user needs in Africa, focusing on at least two sectors from a list that includes water, energy, food security, land use, health and infrastructure. Funded projects will need to engage end users and demonstrate how their tools and applications can enhance climate change adaptation strategies in Africa. The expected impacts include better policymaking for adaptation and increased climate resilience. Eligible proposals must include at least three participants from two different African countries. The indicative budget is 5-7 million Euros.

8. Specific challenge
• Less developed countries, particularly in Africa, are often less
resilient to climate change and require support to adaptation
• With a focus on users’ needs, there is a need to develop bespoke
climate services for these communities
• Make use of the wealth of socio-economic and geophysical
data to better understand the impacts of climate change in Africa
• Climate change is border neutral – working together towards
effective adaptation as climate change increasingly places
populations under pressure
9. Climate Services for Africa
• Actions should exploit new, relevant
climate data
• made available by Copernicus and other
relevant sources (such as GEOSS)
• and create dedicated climate services
for Africa
• For at least two of the following sectors:
water, energy, food security, land use,
health and infrastructure

10. Climate Services for Africa
• Actions should develop and deliver tools/applications which demonstrate
clear end-user engagement, consultation and participation, and which
enhance planning and implementation of climate adaptation strategies
in Africa.
• Actions should consider activities addressed by other initiatives such as
the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), Copernicus, and
development cooperation activities, and provide added value.
• Actions should further consider the EU-Africa Research and Innovation
Partnership on Climate Change and Sustainable Energy.
11. Expected Impacts
• Better policy making for climate adaptation in partner
countries and Europe.
• Supporting international scientific assessments such as the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Assessment reports.
• Stronger adaptive capacity and climate resilience.
12. Climate Services for Africa
• International cooperation is encouraged
Eligibility and admissibility conditions:
Proposals shall include at least three participants from at least
two different African countries.
The participation of social sciences and humanities
disciplines is encouraged to address the complex challenges of
this topic, including challenges associated with relevant gender
issues.
13. • Indicative budget: 5-7 Mio
• Type of Action: Research & Innovation Action (RIA)
!!! RIAs fund activities aiming to establish new knowledge and/or
explore the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product,
process, service or solution.
