With One Voice
1. Flex Spring 2011 Presented by : FLC Librarians With One Voice: Library and Classroom Collaboration
2. Project Information Literacy This project, sponsored by the UW’s iSchool, began in 2008 to study the research habits of young adults in a digital environment. Their web page describes the ongoing study and provides links to past reports and other information: http://projectinfolit.org/
3. “Truth Be Told” Report November 2010 report reflected large-scale survey of 8,353 students from 25 community colleges and universities across the country. “Truth Be Told: How College Students Evaluate and Use Information in the Digital Age”
4. “Truth Be Told” Findings Students report consistently evaluating information found online: In collaboration with instructors or friends and family; Basing evaluation on currency, author’s credentials, URL (domain) and design of websites. Students reported trusting information obtained from the library.
5. “Truth Be Told” Findings Most of the students surveyed reported having problems with research: Starting a research project (84%) Defining a topic (66%) Narrowing the topic (62%) Filtering through irrelevant results (61%) Knowing when they have sufficient information (48%)
6. “Truth Be Told” Findings Fewer students than expected used Web 2.0 applications to collaborate on or manage research tasks. Google Docs and citation-making software were cited most often. Twitter and blogs were rarely used.
7. “Truth Be Told” Recommendations Integrate rubric outlining research process into assignment guidelines; Library instruction should be less about resources and more about research and evaluation skills; Instructors should hold students accountable for their research (i.e. require annotated bibliography explaining why resource was used).

9. Collaboration How can the librarians work with classroom faculty in each discipline to help students develop effective research skills? Break-out discussion session
10. Collaboration Ideas and suggestions: Library can post a resource guide (pathfinder) customized for class or assignment Make follow-up workshops or research appointments available for individuals or groups Embed library services into online course pages Librarians can collaborate on developing research assignments Customizable library assignments made available on website
